@P_F_P here is what I think Friedman will do
Another signing for somebody of the Dan Haren contract. Think Sonny Gray or Tim Hudson from last offseason. I don't know who it is yet but history says there are a good number of players available like this.
Maybe 1 or 2 bullpen signings. None of them will be of the idiotic variety. But hte key with the bullpen is utilizing the players correctly. No more Scott Elbert facing Yadier Molina. No more Brandon League facing LHBs. Actually putting the relief pitchers in the best possible position is one of Friedman's strengths, and he'll work with Don on improving that facet. I hope, at least.
@Disgruntled Goat uh oh it's 1 TLR goat
@capnsparrow @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @MajorPuigBaseball @The Dude Abides @Dustin Nosler yeah. but if Kobe wants to really win a championship and give himself and the club to win the championship and fill up seats because he's still playing, then he doesn't need to make $25 million per year and essentially 45% of the payroll. Esp when he probably won't be 100% healthy ever again.
@Dustin Nosler sounds like Friedman will not be a disinterested bystander when it comes to the farm system.
@MajorPuigBaseball @The Dude Abides @capnsparrow @Dustin Nosler whatever the lakers are doing makes no sense. either go all the way and be competitive now, or fucking tank.
building a team to be the 8th best team in the West does nothing. It is the worst spot to be in. Giving Kobe that contract was idiotic. Not getting the marquee FA that they were never going to get was unfortunate. Trading for Lin and the pick made sense to tank. then they go out and give Nick Young four years? What the fuck are they doing.
@itsthatguywhodoesstuff did you tell him that he is wrong? it is your due dilligence.
also, you need to kill him. your responsibility.
@Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @Dustin Nosler of course, but you're going to have instances of the team drafting Chris Anderson over Hunter Harvey. You're going to have people comparing Logan's draft picks to the Giants' draft picks--which was so strong 10 years ago that it has been the primary reason why they have 2 or maybe hopefully not 3 WS championships associated with it.
@P_F_P @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda I mean, if I had to... HAD to guess regarding 2015, the lineup and rotation will look pretty similar. Maybe Dee gets traded. Maybe CC gets traded. Maybe Hanley doesn't come back. Maybe a catcher is acquired.
But for the most part, the offense will look the same. The changes won't be noticed immediately. We'll see who is brought in. The main thing is that when the team does spend money, it's that it's optimally spent for projected value. Not because of SAVEZ or RBIs or whatever we relied on before.
Really, this team won 94 games. It realistically does not need a complete makeover, and it certainly doesn't need a complete makeover overnight.
@P_F_P @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda obviously, this change isn't going to happen overnight. I don't see how a team with a $235 mil payroll realistically says "hey let's optimize our $/WAR figures!"
this is more about improving the analytics dept, player development dept, scouting, etc to make it more cohesive. This is not at all about "oh hey we're fucked when it comes to competing on the regular market so let's exploit underrated KPIs bo build our baseball team"
@Jacopo (How is this a bad plan!) @Dustin Nosler I don't know about people who doubt. We just look at plenty of his draft picks and realize he's not exactly "invincible" when it comes to drafting as many people claim he is, though it is pretty much impossible to nail literally ever pick.
@The Dude Abides @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @mostly exciting potato "proven RBI guy"
@Dustin Nosler @MajorPuigBaseball that is not plagiarizing according to mark timmons
2 days, 13 hours ago on Dodgers introduce Andrew Friedman, questions about GM spot remain
@P_F_P but to seriously answer your question, not just that
They have like $40 mil coming off of the books. Even if they cut payroll some, they figure to try and optimize the money that they do spend. Also, Friedman made the point of sort of rebuilding the company culture. I assume a chunk of this means developing and implementing an actual analytics staff that was gone until Kasten got there.
@P_F_P here's what Friedman won't do:
Throw fuck tons of money at former closers because they were all-stars 5 years ago
@Dustin Nosler "Reed pitched at Stanford. So he already knows what it means to fail at life and make poor decisions."
@Dustin Nosler "He drafted Chris Reed, who is just my hella favefave"
all these questions being asked about Chemistry sound like Bate work
btw this is worth a listen.
*insert hyperbole joke here*
@MajorPuigBaseball @mostly exciting potato @Subtle Euphemism aka Jonathan Lingo he helped sign many people.
@mostly exciting potato @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda probably about the same.
@TellMyWifeISaidHello @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @mostly exciting potato yeah. that is literally the only other thing they could have done with that money.
@mostly exciting potato he had to pay that much to retain Wilson, b/c Detroit was after him.
2 days, 14 hours ago on Dodgers introduce Andrew Friedman, questions about GM spot remain
@BrianCapoccia and apparently the "grit" factor which for some reason is a thing that must be spent on even though Ned spent money on this and it always backfired
