@RegisDudley This is a situation that especially bedevil designers where clients seem to know what they want, until they see what they were talking about and then realize that they didn't want that. There are forums filled with horror stories like these, and I think there is even a website selling posters and T-shirts with slogans excerpted from client emails.
I agree that constant check-ins is absolutely necessary, but what do you do when the client changes their opinions as frequently as a weather vane in a tempest? This situation will be exacerbated when it's an agency situation because it's not just your billable time on the line- it's the entire agency's.

There is good, solid advice in here.
Here is a question, though. Picture this scenario.
You have a good opening conversation with the client, have a pretty decent feel for what they want and are confident that you can deliver it. You two also seem to gel and the project is exciting.
You draw up the plan, the client okays it and you work your ass off to hit the deliverables. And then the inevitable happens. The client seems to have a sudden change of mind and decides that they don't really want that, and could you redo the whole thing again, with these modifications. You take another stab but you might as well be spitting into a storm. The client is unmoved.
Assuming that you are not incompetent, this is a client that will suck you dry and needs to be fired. How have you dealt with these situations, especially when there is a disagreement between you and the client on the monetary value of the work already delivered? By your book the work done was according to client specifications and you should be paid for it. By the client's book it's overnight's pickle sitting on the kitchen counter that goes into the trash.
How do you think brands can get their heads around all that data which drives purchases? Do you think data mining and Big Data is the answer?

That point about asinine and snarky comments that are shared like wildfire and perceived as more influential by Twitter than meatier content shared less is so true.
I think that one of the challenges influence ranking services will have to take into account is people who actually are influencers might not play by the arbitrary rules of that service. They may be busy doing good shit instead of wasting their time tweeting. Heck, they may be away from Twitter or Facebook for months, and may only use email or telephone to drive million or billion dollar decisions.
How do you identify these true players who fly under the radar?

I think one of the most valuable habits a brand or a community manager should cultivate, especially in times of crisis when allegations are flying thick and fast and tempers are running sky high, is patience and an ability to evaluate the situation dispassionately. Since the Internet never forgets, and since words can have far reaching consequences it's always good to think once, twice and maybe thrice before wading into the melee.
That bread and ketchup thing is legit. It's called Pruno or prison wine, according to Wikipedia. The bread provides the yeast for fermenting the ketchup. Wiki says that depending on how long the fermentation is carried out, the end results can be resemble weak beer or strong wine. (2% to 14% alcohol content).
On a side note, I need to stop thinking about alcohol

As impressive your results have been what's striking is that you stuck to the basics and didn't do anything fancy. You gave people things to think about, carried out a constant conversation and nurtured your network, one person at a time. It's grunt work and unglamorous but that's what brings home the bacon (or cupcakes. Cupcakes are cool)

I was reading this story today where FB execs were essentially bellyaching that they lost out massive amounts of dough by selling marketers from Thicktown, Thicktania user data-names, address and the inside scoop on whether someone prefers Bieber Fever over Black Plague.
Apparently Facebook Exchange and retargeted ads is where they are making a killing, and re-targeted ads don't involve user profile data, only for a teensy weensy cookie sitting in your computer that phones home.

You know what's worse? For a company that has one of the biggest characteristic of a startup (no settled business model) Twitter is behaving like one of the big boys like MS or Google.
They have snapped up products that worked well like Tweetdeck and made something that probably looks like an unpolished beta product. I loved the earlier yellow Tweetdeck - this new blue one makes me want to punch the screen, and I have to restart every time because the client refuses to auto reload the stream and.....I should stop being such a whiny bitch.

I use @bufferapp a lot for scheduling tweeets and LinkedIn updates. Before @bufferapp I was either spamming my timeline at the rate of one tweet every minute, or had to spend way more time at different hours of the day to tweet out links.
Now, after reading something that I think is good I just schedule it in buffer, and in due course it gets tweeted or updated as a LinkedIn status (occasionally I will do Facebook, but I don't want to talk about business related stuff on Facebook.)
Now, if they could incorporate Google+, and Facebook pages into their browser extensions I would be one happy camper

I think you have to consider the culture. I am assuming that Samsung India hired a local PR agency to liaise with the bloggers. I was a tech journalist in my past life with India's largest personal technology magazine and I have an idea how the big boys deal with tech media and blogs, which are very niche and lightweight compared to mainstream media.
So I am guessing that the PR person thought s/he could bully the bloggers and they would roll over and do what they wanted. After all, tickets from Berlin to Delhi are expensive and these bloggers are not exactly rolling in cash.

There you go, making me look bad to myself.
One of my biggest weakness that I still haven't done #1 -being consistent. I have tried multiple tracks, and have had successes, only to be followed by relapses. it's a constant fight these days in my head, with the red guy in horns often beating the one in wings and halo.
Regarding images, I use Creative Commons licensed photos on Flickr that are free for personal and commercial use. Another resource for images that I have found to be helpful is MorgueFile. Lots of gorgeous hi-res photos out there free for any kind of use.
I wonder if they did a hard sell in the Thank You note, or it was a soft sell.
Writing something like "Thanks for being our customer. We are very excited to give you a discount of 25% on any accessory and we would highly recommend that you try it out. This offer expires on 30th Aug" is very different from "Thanks for being our customer. We appreciate your patronage and would love to gift you a discount of 25% on any accessory . "
The first one reads like a smarmy salesman plastering a fake smile while pushing you a used car, while the second one sounds more personal and way less pushy.
If they went with the second approach, I can't fault them. But if they went in for the juglar, it's a daft marketing and branding approach.

@ExtremelyAvg The story's that Marissa Mayer has plateaued at Google. She was employee #20, and despite being the head of search and design have been steadily pushed to the background. Right now, she is a VP and does not even have a place in Google's leadership homepage. There are about 10 SVPs over her and many of them have joined Google later
So this writer at All Things Digital says that for someone as ambitious and driven as MM, the Yahoo gig is the best thing to happen. She gets a place in the C-suite, she gets a challenging task and if she turns the supertanker around, she will be even more famous in Silicon Valley than she has been at Google for a very long time.
Personally, I think it's a smart move. She really has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

This is a tempest in a teacup.
I don't want CEOs to be like the Illuminati, hiding behind in the shadows and talking to a camera with a torchlight shining up their noses. Neither do I want them to be like those Twitter addicts who, as @geoffliving puts it, wanks off on Twitter or Facebook.
But a middle ground ain't bad. Michael Dell sits at a hangout once a week or a month, no? That's good. Why not get the CEO live on the company's Facebook wall at a certain period of time? Or do something like Obama's Twitter townhall.
It does not have to be a zero sum game, folks
@rdopping I have been getting good results with non spammy promotion. I mainly post in LinkedIn groups because I write for a B2B audience.There is no reason your blog post about content gating in a B2B context won't get read in a B2B marketing group if your headline and blurb is good enough and you are providing thoughtful content.
Blog comments are also a good idea to promote a post. I saw this post about YouTube for B2B, jumped in with a comment and mentioned that I had written a post a few days back about how YouTube's own manual can help content creators get more views. That blog was a great traffic source.
And third, as @Danny Brown mentioned are Twitter chats . The other day we were doing this chat about ebooks and the topic of gating ebooks came out. I again referenced a few stats and conclusions from the post and got asked by multiple people to post the link.
Plugging your post isn't inherently spammy if that post is relevant to the discussion and you don't bring something else to the conversation.

This is one aspect of my life that needs looking at. I am not busy in the sense that I could not postpone work and go catch up with a friend on an hour's notice. But I do need to work harder at setting boundaries between sitting in front of the computer, and doing other stuff.
For a single guy w/o any family obligations it gets hard to tear yourself off. And efficiency dips, because I always have this feeling that yeah, "There would be time to fix that. Let's read some more Cracked".

Any particular reason for that? Won't you have to update your personas at some point, maybe because your target market has migrated to a different platform or they are starting to favor content in new formats.?
For example, iPad apps will enjoy a higher level of importance in many personas in 2012 as compared to 2010.
Or maybe, this ongoing and project nomenclature is a relative thing, based on timescales (a blog needs to be updated weekly, while you can come back and look at personas in maybe 6-8 months)

We may not notice but in fields like financial reporting content has to be published in a particular format. It's just how things are and creativity is neither needed nor encouraged. And to be honest, anyone writing these things day in and day out would probably be an automaton
So yeah, let's get the algorithms cracking on these things.
Have you played around with Real Time metrics and this new feature. Something tells me there must be a way to combine these two to know more about how readers are interacting with content through social in real time.

@jaybaer , Marcus (Livefyre is not playing nice with your handle) do you see Google rolling back this +1 fueled search feature anytime soon? I know a lot of people hate how search results have become a sort of a walled garden.
In a way, it's good that +1-ing search results have not caught on as much as hitting the Like button, else I would have to keep another browser open all the time if I wanted results that are dictated not based on what my friends like but what I actually want.
