@mbnight48 @Jackiesaurus Rex @Geoff Z Since you are late to this I will give you an update on what has happened in this thread. The original reason I started writing was to point out that the people commenting were either only mad because it was something that they had a loose connection to or they just wanted to join a bandwagon of judgement. As you can see I was correct that almost everyone has since moved on and forgotten all about this.
My other point is that even though it makes people feel better to think they got fired, they haven't. Most people don't know how the radio business works but anyone with a morning show is under contract with that station and that contract will not be broken. The station said they fired them so that people will feel like justice was served but in actuality they are currently on a 6 month paid vacation serving out the rest of their contract. After that time they will get new jobs in bigger markets making more money, that's how this actually goes. The station doesn't actually care what they said, they were scared of losing money so now the bad men are gone and everyone can feel good about listening to the station and buying the products they sell.
The facts are they were a crappy unfunny radio show on a crappy AM sports talk station. 10 years ago no one would have heard about this incident but because of the internet it blew up into something huge. This situation could have been used as a springboard to talk about real issues. Before this no one was talking about ALS in the news. They could have "suspended" the djs for a few days and then brought them back and had them work with Gleason and his organization to continue to bring awareness to the situation and turned it into a positive situation that could open the eyes of other people. Instead the ALS was in the news for a day or 2 and people got to feel good because they think that 3 people lost their jobs.
I would argue that the djs already did far more good for ALS then they did harm. If they didn't talk about it, the article that Gleason wrote it would have just been another story in sports illustrated that people would have passed by to get to the latest LeBron James story. I know that I haven't heard anything about ALS in a few years and for a few days people were talking about it again.
I absolutely think you have the right to voice your opinion and you should. It should just be in the right direction. Complaining about these djs got nothing done. They didn't lose any money and in the long run they will be making more money. The only way to hurt a radio station is to not listen to it and to convince others not to. That is the only way they stations lose money and that is the only thing they care about. If people launched a campaign to stop listening to the show then they would have lost commercials and money and would have been forced off the air.
I do feel terrible about your situation. I cant say I understand what you deal with because I have no idea and it would be completely disingenuous of me to act like I do. I know its horrible and I wish there were better treatments. I just feel like another opportunity was missed to do some good because a mob of people attacked instead of being rational and just saying "hey that's not really cool let's talk about ALS for a minute" Based on the quote from Gleason himself I think he might agree with me.
1 year, 1 month ago on Audio: Atlanta sports radio station mocks Steve Gleason
And since your not even smart enough to keep your Facebook page private I don't think you have kids. I don't know any parents that have 0 mentions of their children and nothing but posts about politics and animals.
So you got me, your just a troll and you don't even believe the stuff you have been saying.
You have completely made me lose any faith I had in Georgetown or the library of Congress
1. You started all of it.
2. There is no question about your lack of intelligence.
3. You still have never been able to prove any of your points.
4. You will respond to this with some delusional statement that has very little to do with any thing I have written.
The only person who's opinion really matters in this situation has spoken
All three hosts have apologized on Twitter and personally to the Team Gleason foundation, as Gleason himself wrote on Facebook.
"Received and accepted,"
he wrote. "We have all made mistakes in this life. How we learn from
our mistakes is the measure of who we are."
Since the story broke,
Gleason said, there's been a lot of talk about ALS, an ailment he
characterizes as being "not (well) understood ... and largely ignored."
Hopefully, this unintentional uproar will help change that, he said.
@locohoya @Geoff Z You presented incorrect "facts" based on stuff you heard from other people including your children. I think you are confusing me with Barry since you were getting shut down by 2 people at once. I don't talk about god because I don't believe in one, that's Barry's thing and he's good at it.
All I did was point out that everything you said was incorrect and mostly made up, like when you said you were done talking several times yet you keep getting back into it.
If your going to argue with people that are smarter than you, you need to have all your facts in line and double check them so you can at least pretend to be smart.
Unless you can point out a time when I said anything about god to you, but you cant.
I look forward to hearing from you again since you can't even back up your statements about not saying anything else.
You also said that you were done commenting after you made your first profound comment, you should have stuck with that.
If you're looking for intelligent dialogue you need to provide half of it. You presented invalid points that were easily picked apart and then you had nothing else.
I would also like to point out again that you brought this all on yourself by trying to sound smart when you came after barry8905 and me.
So you're fine with your kids watching a show that is meant for adults and makes much worse jokes but you're happy that 3 guys got in trouble for making jokes on a radio show that is also meant for an adult audience.
So you got yourself into a discussion with people that are smarter than you and now you don't know what to do so your just going for personal attacks.
So you didn't see any doctors?
So your church is cool with you casting judgement and calling people assholes. I'm pretty sure that's the exact opposite of what jesus would do.
You sure do have a lot of opinions about stuff that you don't listen to or watch.
If you didn't want to be involved in a conversation you should have stayed out of it in the first place. I said nothing to you until you addressed me directly. It's not my fault that you can't support your arguments enough to defend them.
@locohoya It's hard to believe that these guys have a show based on making ALS jokes. The only part of the show that I have heard is the 30 second clip, I'm assuming its the same with you. You should know what you are talking about before you make blanket statements.
@locohoya They were suspended because the station got scared. They got "fired" because the story got picked up and started getting national attention. If people continue to listen and buy products then nothing will change at the station. It's a business and as long as the business keeps going then they don't care. The ONLY way to change anything would be to interrupt the money flow buy not supporting the station.
By expressing your outrage your just giving publicity to the station and the jocks. I guarantee the ratings were higher today then they have ever been and when the jocks come back they will have the highest ratings they have ever had. All you are doing by talking about it is giving them free publicity.
@barry8905 I think we live in a godless world as well, just not the same way you do. I think we will have to agree to disagree on that one.
@Yodapthd007 @music2013 You wouldn't hear him do something like this now because he is always on vacation. When he is in the studio he doesn't care enough to do wacky bits. However, when he was starting out he made a name for himself by being as outrageous as possible and he absolutely would have done something like this.
These guys also have their own fans that aren't surprised by this bit and will follow them to the next place the get a job.
You are my favorite kind of christian. You have your beliefs that you clearly stand by strongly, but you are not so wrapped up in them that you have a warped view of the way things work in the world. I wish more of your fellow "believers" could be as sensible as you are.
@barry8905 I'm glad I'm not the only one that understands this. I have already tried explaining this 2 or 3 times in this thread and no one else seems to get it.
@ShepAussie I think that was the jock breaking character and admitting that the joke didn't work out and it was time to stop. It wasn't part of the bit.
@music2013 He didn't do it today so no one cares.
@skulls12 I thought I would "NEVER HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN" lol
This is not horrific. This is a joke that was in poor taste. If you are actually horrified by something some dumb radio jocks did then your priorities are so out of whack that there is no hope for you.
@heavenbound34 You can let them know by not paying attention to them. If they lose the audience then they will go away. I am sure that just like me, today is the first day you have ever heard of these guys. I understand you're upset right this second because your CAPS indicate yelling but you'll forget about it soon and they will keep getting paid until they get hired at a different radio station.
So did you read the story or just the headline? Steve wrote an article for Sports Illustrated and that gave the radio guys the idea to make fun of him. Based on that if he was worried about it he could respond for himself. However, I did read his article and I have a feeling that he wont respond. It was very well written and touching and proves that he is above all of this. If anything he would be happy that it is bringing attention to ALS in a way that never would have happened if the radio guys ignored it. If they didn't do their stupid bit it would have never gotten any attention.
@kxmech Obviously people never made fun of him when we could hear them because people would be too afraid to do that, but they have no problem staring and making comments about how lucky my Uncle is that he gets to ride around all the time when everyone else had to walk. Or staring at us when he would spill something on himself because he couldn't move his fingers to grab stuff completely.
My point is that the only person that should really be outraged in Steve Gleason and his family and since he wrote an article that started this whole thing off he can also communicate his feelings and he is the one that should be doing it. Everyone else speaking for him based on how it has effected there lives is just false outrage.
@Clnmama47Susan They will be fine, they will get paid until the contract runs out and then get jobs somewhere else.
@HomewoodJamieR Go ahead, since I don't know or care about you they wont bother me. If they are funny I will laugh. I'll start
What do you call a quadraplegic at your door?
What do you call a quadraplegic in a bathtub?
I learned these from my uncle.
@marimar2013 i just get tired of the false outrage that is generated whenever something like this comes up.
I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings, I would expect that a guy with a tough name like skulls12 would be a little thicker skinned.
I "inferred" that this has very little to do with any of your lives and its best not to get all worked up about it.
@Clnmama47Susan it lasted less then 30 seconds before they realized that it wasn't working and stopped it
@Clnmama47Susan You realize that it wasn't a real call right? it was a skit that wasn't funny and didn't work out.
@Rowdyriss Not sure what spealing is but there is no truth to that statement. There are lots and lots of people that do nothing but good and they get shit on constantly while some evil people live very long lives and make lots of money.
@Rowdyriss It's not the computer. For instance you keep typing "u" instead of you. However in the very same post you were able to type "any" and "of" so the y and o clearly work.
@highsocksbaker He almost got in trouble once for making a rape joke. But instead of apologizing, he ignored the attackers and made subtle jokes about it for the next few weeks on his show.
none of this make sense.
@Rowdyriss I would take you more seriously if you used actual words and formed better sentences. And that toys r us joke is hilarious, I can't believe you're the first one to think of that.
@highsocksbaker Glad someone is starting to get my point.
no one physically attacked anyone, that is a huge stretch and has nothing to do with the situation. And Gleason can defend himself. He was able to write an article in the first place that started all this and he could write another one explaining how he feels about it.
Thankfully my child is fine. But my Uncle just died after being a quadriplegic for most of his life. He was one of the most important people in my life and one of the most valuable things taught me was that no one can make you feel bad about yourself unless you let them. We got stared at everywhere we went and I heard jokes all the time, but he didn't care so he taught me not to.
@Rowdyriss I had some trouble figuring out what you are trying to say due to misspellings and words that just don't exist but I think I got the idea. If you actually knew anything about karma you would know that it all has to do with past and future lives. It would not effect them or me. First because it's not a real thing and second because even if it was real they would have to die and be reincarnated for it to take effect.
You're not very good at comprehension either. My point is that if the radio guys made fun of a different disease most of the people on this page wouldn't be upset because it would have nothing to do with them. If you read the posts it is mostly people that are related to someone with the disease. People only care if it personally effects them.
And you obviously missed the solution part of the post:
"You never listened to them in the first place, they have no effect on your life unless you let them, move on."
You obviously don't know how radio works, The station has to say that they are fired to try to calm people down. They didn't say they terminated the contract. For example: When Opie and Anthony got "fired" for people have sex in a church, they sat around for a long time getting paid lots of money until the contract was done then they signed with someone else. Same thing will happen here.
I also never said I excused them I don't think it's funny, I would never have made the joke. But people should be allowed to make fun of anything. It's either funny or not but it should be allowed. If you don't like what your hearing (and I'm assuming you wouldn't have heard about it unless it got picked up by yahoo same as I did) then don't listen. Then the contract wont get renewed and they actually would be out of work.
@jackiehaase That's because you are a sensible person. Thank you. We need more of you if we're going to survive as a country.
@skulls12You're not very good at reading comprehension. Please point out where I agreed with or justified them in any way.
Within two weeks you will all forget about this and move onto something else that personally offends you. If they made jokes about people with cancer there would be a completely different group of people complaining and most of you would not care because you don't know anyone with cancer. The only problem with what they did was that is was not well thought out and they aren't really funny enough to pull it off even if it was planned out.
The real joke is on all of you that think they are fired. They are currently on paid vacation. The station that owns their contract is not going to let them go because they would just bring all the heat from this incident to a rival station and have a bigger audience the day they start then they ever had to begin with. The only way to stop that is to keep them under contract and pay them to do nothing until it runs out.
You never listened to them in the first place, they have no effect on your life unless you let them, move on.
@DeathProof @HollyGothic My impression is that his opinion on all of the supernatural, is that he doesn't know if it exists or not but so far he has found no evidence that it is real.
