That was the game that, despite unreal snow in the capital and the Penguins traveling in from a game the night before, neither Washington nor the networks wanted to move, wasn't it? Dammit, now all the anger I felt in the lockout has morphed into rage against the Capitals.

But anyway...if Knuble can hang with Malkin and Neal, I say why not give it a shot? Especially if the cost is low.

I believe the Penguins found a tactical advantage in this matchup during Game 2...an extreme commitment to the concept of "grinding bitches down". Not to mention Brad Thiessen flashing the form that brought him the Bastien Award in shutting out the Checkers.

Crank up the hitting on the road, and we've got just as good a chance as any to steal a road game.

Looking at the nominees, the Jack Adams this year turns into a discussion over what decides "best coach". Is it purely and simply the most points (Vigneault), or is it the points put up relative to what the coach has to work with (Disco/Trotz)?

The burden now falls to the farm clubs to bring some true hardware to the Penguins organization this season.

I was trying to distract myself during last night's shenanigans, so I looked up the dates on which the Pittsburgh and WBS seasons ended over the last few years. This is the first time in three years that WBS has outlasted Pittsburgh on the calendar. The last time it happened was 2008, and that was by six days. PIT lost their SCF Game 6 on June 4, while WBS lost their CCF Game 6 on June 10.

If there is any hope at all, the Penguins will win tonight. Enough of this "Cardiac Penguins" bullshit. It's high time WBS grabbed their collective sac (thanks, Evason, for that line) and took command of a playoff series right from the outset.

Get it the fuck done.

It cannot go unmentioned that Norfolk played Game 3 without two of its biggest guns, Mattias Ritola and Blair Jones. Both were called up to Tampa Bay due to Downie's suspension and Malone's possible injury. Both will likely be out of the lineup again for Game 4, and according to JB's blog, the effect of "grinding bitches down" is showing on Norfolk, who after Game 3 boasted only seven healthy forwards.

Keep it up.

I've been following this team to varying degrees pretty much since its inception in 1999, and this is easily the best chance we've ever had to bring the Calder Cup home. The Penguins need to take this opportunity now, because none of us know if such a grand opportunity will come by again.

A few quotes on this game, courtesy of Jonathan Bombulie of the Citizens' Voice:

Braden Holtby, on the Veilleux slash: “That’s going to be a really lengthy suspension...Probably in the ballpark of Marty McSorley, I would think. It was a blatant two-hander right to the chin. You need to get that stuff out of hockey.”

John Hynes, on the Veilleux slash (before the suspension was handed down): “I don’t think he’ll actually get a suspension...It was just a play. They were going back and forth on the ice. It was really minor. Pinizzotto was back on the ice two minutes later, so just a minor play. Referee made a good call, five minute, and it shouldn’t be anything too significant.”

Veilleux himself: “We’ll see what happens. I cannot control that. I don’t think I was dirty. Maybe I will be suspended, but I will deal with it.”

Pinizzotto after the suspension was handed down, to the Harrisburg Patriot News: "It was just a blatantly dirty play...He came across, like, right over the top of my neck-face area. You see what the NHL is doing in suspending guys for a lot of games. To give a guy only two games like that, you’re not really teaching him anything. … It was just a blatant head shot. Two games for that is kind of ridiculous.”

The last regular season prize to get is the Kilpatrick Trophy, which is the AHL's President's Trophy equivalent. Magic number for this is 7, and we are aiming for Portland.

Portland is at 94 points with 9 left to play, so they can get as high as 112. WBS is at 105 right now, so we're looking for points that WBS gets and points that Portland doesn't get that add up to 7.

I must respectfully disagree with Eric tonight...no matter how the GW was scored, no matter who scored it, Nolan Schaefer was absolutely my star of the game. Insanity tonight by him.

Very entertaining all around. Providence, in general, impressed the hell out of me tonight. First time I've seen them this year, and they were pretty good. They weren't afraid to play the Pens physically, and the Pens gave it right back to them.

One minor concern: Providence, coming into tonight (according to my mother), had the worst PK success rate in the league, and they absolutely owned the Pens PP tonight. Slight point of contention, but whatever...first to 30 wins.

The beat writer for the Bears, Tim Leone, tweeted tonight that if the current pace of the Penguins (30 wins in 38 games) were projected to the rest of the season, they'd get 63 wins...which would break the record for wins in a season of 60, set last season by the Bears. That projected point total would be 126, which would also be a record...eclipsing the 1992-93 Binghamton Rangers at 124 points. Food for thought...or jinxing.

I swear to God...Todd Richards did not learn the trap in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. I don't think he did...my memory's a bit fuzzy there...

Nice burn on Smith. Not many people like him anymore.

With a 7 p.m. start in Pittsburgh tonight, if there's no news of a call-up by now, I think we'll have a full lineup tonight...well, as full as we've got right now.

I swear, Eric...I'll try to get my pictures in earlier tonight.

GO PENGUINS.

I haven't seen any call-ups for tonight, so between Cooke coming back from his family stuff and Geno still in the lineup (I guess), it's still a full lineup in WBS.

Whoever gets the call, I'm pretty sure they'd be excluded from the waiver rules due to Crosby's injury. Basically, Pittsburgh has their pick of the litter, and we on the farm are at the mercy of their decision.

It'll be an interesting dynamic, though, if Sterling gets the call. His Chicago Wolves back in 2008 defeated the Penguins in the Calder Cup Finals, who at the time were coached by current Minnesota coach Todd Richards.

@thepensblog I wouldn't mind a Tangradi call-up at this point. If for no other reason than he's the hot hand scoring, and his being a pure winger could move Staal back to center instead of wing on Malkin's line. Set up two power lines rather than 1 super-line. Just a thought.

@akus It froze once that I saw between the second and third periods. We even got a comment from one of the LiveFyre staff thanking us for testing the server as we are.

Just as we shouldn't get too excited over last night, I don't think we should get too excited over tonight. It's not a revenge game. It's not payback for last year. It's not Staal's vengeance. It's two points.

If it was anybody other than Stamkos, I'd probably feel sorry for him. Well, maybe Ovie too. Or anybody on Philly.

What a game tonight. Excellent start to the second half of the season.
