Love what you said about listening to people. We don't do that often enough. It's easy to get tied up in what we have to say, and what we have to offer, that we forget that others are mostly concerned with themselves. If we honour that, listen, and provide accordingly, I think we have a good chance of coming out on top.

I just had a client this week send me a "whine" about receiving yet another invite to yet another new social media tool. I keep coming back to my original question - are the majority of my target market there? It's only when my target market is highly active on a certain tool/in a certain place that I need to even consider the tool. If they're not using it, neither am I. I think we sometimes forget the basics in light of the bells and whistles.

Thanks for this, Jay. I love the bit about "social media happens fast, but success is accrued very slowly". That's something people just don't get. We're back to the old "know like and trust" - which has always been the case. Social Media makes us think that it should happen faster online. I think it happens more slowly. Great post. Great article. Thanks. Personally I hate leaving a phone number because I dread being hassled to death by sales calls. I'll leave a "catch all" email address and then if I know I want to move ahead with someone, I'll give them more valuable contact information. In my mind, a site has to earn the right to get close.
