I'm starting to think this team will never be able to fully compete until it's lifted of these silly budgetary restrictions melnyk has over it. I'm not saying spend just to spend but enough of the lip service about the team can be better strictly through drafting. we should be going after some of the best Fa agents out there and continue to compliment the team.
this should be a year where we go after a veteran blueliner like Dan Boyle to put a steady the second pairing and give this youth a bit more leadership. this should be a time where after we deal spezza for a quality winger we could go after stastny and prove to be deep down the middle. then we could trade for stewart.
no... lets cross our fingers and hope we can do a trade or two and stay on the periphery of contending longer.
I'm afraid we'll never truly able to contend with Melnyk tugging at the purse strings.

ya just had a look at it. pretty bad for the first 3 years. maybe they're better off trying him out next year to see if under another coach he can perform better. it's gonna be shanabana's team next year. I expect they'll fire Nonnis and Carlyle.

@Nichols6thSens @FloActionwhen you go after a player you better damn well know you're going to put him in a situation where he can succeed. doesn't seem like nonnis and carlyle saw eye to eye on that. I'm not even saying clarkson can't be successful in the NHL, but you have to utilize him properly and obviously there is some misscalculation between the leafs as to what type of player he is or how to properly utilize him
. from what i gathered both PMac and BM were after Clarkson. they probably had a plan for him. probably utilize him the way greening was being used on the first line with spezza. he'd probably be more productive then greening was too.maybe the same way that scouting on our team recognise that macarthur wasn't played to his full advantage. i'd still take clarkson on my team today. it will be interesting to see if they buy him out if BM still goes after him. obviously his price tag will be lesser.

is he the scout that scouted Macarthur and said we should take him? cuz that was one of the best FA acquisition of the summer. pro-scouts are pretty important. ask Nonnis what he thinks when they can him over the Clarkson 6 year deal. eeeey ho!

funny how spezza didn't receive an invite. I guess he's not that valuable in their eyes either...
Honestly you guys put so much emphasis on the points he puts up but not as much on the points he allows when he's on the ice. he lacks the drive to get back in his own zone, clearly he's not a 200ft type of player. we'd probably do much better with a guy that gets 25 less points a year that plays a complete game. to reference the mendes article i'd take ladd over spezza anyday. the problems in winnipeg are deeper then a team not following their captain. i'm not sure ladd is the right captain but that's besides the point. you can have immense success in the nhl without a PPG center but instead a guy that plays with more compete and an all around game. key point patrice bergeron.
i sincerely hope we trade spezza this summer, hell if we could get ladd in a deal i'd be all over it. but i'm sure captain giggles won't waive his NTC for winnipeg. but there are guys all around the league that could be made available in exchage, that i'd take over spezza. it will be interesting to see if Anaheim, st-louis or NY get bounced in the first, they could be fishing for an answer on scoring and hopefully BM pulls the trigger.
let's move on from the core that failed to show compete in the finals in 2007 and focus around our young core building. we have turris, karls, ryan, mac, zib, Zsmith and let's hope we can build up wier and cowen to get better. hopefully BM takes a serious stab at Dan boyle this summer, we could use a guy like him to stabilize the back end and show some vet support.
and please enough of the apologist with the spezza, his time is done, plenty has been said about why he'll likely be on the decline. i just cannot see how he will ever help us life a cup.
he's clearly been outplayed by other goalies within the organization. 50 spots doesn't amount to that much when you get down to it.

I find you highly critical of bobby ryan. before it is said he sustained his back injury you saw a player that put 100% compete out there, managed to get some speed which was thought he lacked and even back-ckecked, there was a guy that was easily on route to the 40 goal plateau. we're not talking about a guy like michalek that's managed to get close by getting some empty netters and bad goals but a guy that will consistently find the back of the net with talent. honestly if you don't think that's worth retaining you need to take a hard long look at winning organizations out there. you will pay for elite talent. on top of the fact that after what should be labeled a disastrous season you have him publicly come out and say he's happy to sit down and negotiate a long term contract with BM? you're gonna have to make nothing short of an amazing pitch to get FA to come to ottawa in the first place i don't think you need to push your best assets out of town as their dedication to staying long term here will impact others to want to come here.
on the other hand,i completely agree that you that spezza has to be traded for the best return you can get. his time is up and luckily he's having a fairly good end of the season so that should boost his value up. his health declining compiled with his refusal to play a 200 foot game and his lack of character let alone that i doubt the team can go anywhere as a captain make it a no brainer that he needs too be moved.
it will be hard to decide who replaces him as captain (not a fan of a third pairing dman in Phillips being the captain) but that's why i would enter next season without a captain and let someone separate themselves from the pack to earn that title.
Pmac has made questionable moves all season long. his reliance on veterans when they were clearly not ready to play or were suffering speaks to me that he had problems deviating from his game plan.
I'd really like to understand his logic this year. most of the time he'd do the opposite of what you'd expected he'd do.
playing andersson when lehner was hot, going with a broken michalek, benching wier all the time.... playing cowen all the time... phillips being counted on so much and his PP time? so many line changes, not letting chemestry develop... the man was a tornado.

@Nichols6thSens @FloAction dunno, resembles last season quite a bit if you ask me.

spezza out, sens win. surprises? no.
get him out of here!
also when was the last time the sens had less then 2 goals against? mmmhhhhh no spezza i say eh?
Can't remember the exact game but I think it was in OT and spezza failed to cover his guy and (again) no back check and blamed greening for the whole thing. Probably lost the room there and then.

you resign Bobby ryan, there's no issue there. we do not have the kind of talent he has in the org or is it easy to have. had he not gotten injured he'd most likely gotten to 40 goals again. thankfully those totals could be expected with turris and without spezza which you absolutely have to part ways with. if BM cannot get the job done, get someone who can in in his place.

the time has come and pass for Jason, if Brian Murray can't see that maybe it's Brian Murrays time that has come and passed with this org. And i'm a huge BM fan. I cannot support a decision that keeps Jason over this summer. spezza does not play a 200 foot game, he's weak defensively, his health is always in question and he's not shown ever leadership qualities(throwing other players under the bus). he's a hindrance to this team going forward, we'd be better off without him(see last year). lets capitalize on getting a rturn now as opposed to being stuck with the anchor that he is.
I certainly hope the senators can make a convincing offer to Hemsky or else this trade was a mistake.
I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do on a line with Zib when Spezza has been shipped off.
this team is going to lose michalek, then spezza and some are arguing maybe even Anderson. we're gonna need to offer up 5-6 to Hemsky if we're hoping to stay above the cap floor. i get that there will be salary coming back in a spezza trade it might be in the form of two players.
Are we that budget conscious with the new TV rights? is it that hard to imagine that we'll be several millions over the cap? melnyk's stated that he would spend if it was in the best interest of the team (now whatever his word means is another discussion altogether).

I don't believe this organization is possibly ever going to go the tanking way of the oilers, i can't see that being good and for the most part you end up with a losing culture around the room much like what the oilers are experiencing. they are leagues away from being a contender. absolutely no back end.
a few things that could and maybe should happen in the off season
Jason Spezza should be traded. where is a bit of mystery but maybe a team like the NYR where they could possibly get stepan back with a promising winger could be interesting, maybe they go to colorado and we end up with ROR although we might have to add something to that deal.
we need some veteran prescence on the back end and not on the bottom pairing. the loss of gonchar was obvious, Dan Boyle is looking to become a FA and i'm very surprised the sharks haven't made him an offer yet. he could easily slide into our top 4 and bring some stability.
I still think stewart ends up here and that might be a draft day deal when picks worth are at the highest. wier and a 2nd could possibly do it. Tim Murr was saying when he landed his new job that buff needed more mobile PMD coming up and they didn't have that type in the system. could very easily see him going for him.
that's 3 deals and i know it sounds more like an NHL13 scenario then hockey deals.
I'm not sure BM has the balls to trade spezza but it sure is what should happen. as for Bobby Rye which is the other big question mark, i doubt Bobby will want to ink a new contract with such a disappointing season to show for. him and his agent will want to have a better showing to try and negotiate a better deal. unless we are throwing kessel type of money at him, i doubt he'll agree to a new contract. I doubt Murray trades him either. they'll probably try and work out a deal before the trade Deadline and if they can't by then then.... that'll be it.
