@PenGeno Loved the "diving" motion he was making on Malkin. Give me an F-ing break…

At DK's site the commenters hone in on the likelihood that Orpik was a big Despres detractor.

Despres definitely had one of his better games. I think a big part of that could be that he got away from Scuderi for good chunks of time. If memory serves… (Oddly, Despres still had less time than Scuderi. The 2:40 SH helps #4 but still…).

@The Hockey Hooligan Adams was never going to be the one sent back, so I'm not sure Adams staying up punched Sill's ticket. Adams was always going to stay up with the Pens.

@rico I like what you're saying.

That said, of course, Kunitz and Crosby do often have a sort of mind meld thing. Perhaps you can hold off on that until Beau returns, and give Hornie a little more time to get the same mind meld thing going with Crosby too.

Or, if Malkin is unhappy now, throw him a bone (Kunitz). The third line can be Sutter + Comeau + Spaling or something. Should be fine. Fourth of Downie, Adams, Sill.

@Non Jussi was gone. Beau is hurt but looked good in pre-season.

Just you wait. Saying they're doing "just fine' doesn't mean they will continue to do "just fine." It's a present tense sentence. They're 3-1-0. That's the present tense, and they are doing "just fine."

FWIW, too: 6 goals 5-on-5, 6 5-on-4. Then there are 2 5-on-3, and one 4-on-5 for a league-leading 4.0 goals per game.

They should have edited the slow-mo endpoint to right after the save was made so you could instantly hear the crowd cheering. Duh.

@LoranMannIsTheMan @YorkPens Additionally, I'm getting awfully tired of the failed clearing attempts that go right to an opposition player.

Good ol' Despres looked horrible. I'm sad that he'll probably make the team. Too late to trade him + Scuderi for a bag of pucks?

@Hibbits @cblack66 Agree, Hibbits.

Additionally, he's got some solid third-line wings this year. Dude seems to be massively over-estimating his value.

Then again, so too is Spaling, perhaps. :)

@Bandwagon Fan 4401 I'd rather replace him (as we did) with better hockey players than fast skaters who can't finish or win puck battles.

@brendannn Let's agree to disagree on Craig Adams, who WAS a good (never great) player. He's gotten old very quickly.

@firefox91 Not necessarily. Could have just been the fact that in COL he'll play on the NHL squad the whole year, or at least more so than in PIT.

Could be totally true AND not a "bad" thing for PIT or what it is like to play there.

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://thepensblog.com/2014-archives/brian-gibbons-signs-with-columbus.html

@firefox91 Disagree. The comments above say it well: he DIDN'T compete very well, and did not use the time or the linemates he was given to prove otherwise. He doesn't match up favorably against the new forwards the Pens have next season.

There's a reason COL gave him less than a million bucks and a two-way deal. And that he took it. He's an AHL player. That's the reason.

@popemasta @bobbykimberley Interesting. I wonder if that was a "playing time" decision (he has been back and forth, AHL and up, etc.) or a "I hate the Pens" type of thing. I'm guessing the former, but I'm not absolutely certain.

@brendannn Do you disagree that Spaling > Adams, Glass, Vitale, and several others we had employed in the bottom six?

Because from where I'm sitting Spaling > Adams+Glass+Vitale.

Just because YOU never heard of him (a guy on a WC team) doesn't mean he doesn't improve the depth of the bottom six.

Note that Nashville didn't act like it was a no-brainer, or a steal, or anything like that. I think it was a fair trade, and a good trade.

@brendannn You do get that Engelland signed a contract for $2.9M PER YEAR, right? So no, we could not have "just re-upped Engo."

The rest of your posts on the recent moves by the Pens make just about as much sense.

That all sounds good, but so too does probably every NHL coach's philosophy when it's written down on paper instead of playing out on the ice. The truth lies when the rubber meets the ice (or net?).

@Loo_Bakka @YorkPens  IMO Babcock might be the only true "upgrade" available. Where by "available" I mean "possible." If he wants to quit his contract, he certainly could. Might relish the chance to coach Sid. He's done it in two Olympics games already. And Malkin is a bonus. The Red Wings play a defensive oriented game with a very simple offensive scheme that includes a net-front presence.

I don't think Dan's a bad coach. I just think his "system" has its flaws, and he favors "grinding them down" without having *any people capable of grinding* (i.e. he favors speed over size).
