It's not exactly an exclusive club. Nearly every unknown goalie to start against the Pens is in it. :)

This is what passes for a recap these days?
Maatta will be out until February.

@firefox91 Do you mean Malkin's goal? :)

@firefox91 We'd already gotten a win in those jerseys, hadn't we? Yep: http://video.penguins.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlg=20142015,2,255&lang=en . Rangers game. In that weird shootout.
I too like the bottom lines contributing. At times this year they've won the game, and those would have been losses last year.

@MoonSloth He still has the limited NTC. No idea what teams are listed on that as blocked trades. He could waive it, but I doubt he would if they want to send him to Edmonton.

@Juniorjunior I haven't seen anyone blaming the loss on the refs. Just pointing something out doesn't mean "100% blame, right there, this thing!"
And… the officiating was not "even." I can say that without "blaming" the refs for getting one point out of two games.

The theory about the reffing does not align with the Internet conspiracy theorists about how the Pens are favored everywhere they go because Gary loves Sidney or something.
Reffing is, far and away, the single most obnoxious, frustrating thing about NHL hockey. Not only is it inconsistent from the regular season to the post-season, it's not even consistent in the first and third periods, it's not consistent based on the names on the backs of the jerseys, it's not consistent from ref to ref, there are "make-up calls" and it's so routine it's almost expected, and a whole bunch of other things.
It's pathetic, and again, the single most obnoxious, frustrating thing about NHL hockey. The refs have - and regularly execute - far too much control.

Hit was clean. No question.
Malkin standing up for a teammate was fine. Worst (realistic) case is that he was risking one point (the Leafs MAY have tied it up), but he gained much more than that. He also didn't start whaling away with haymakers - he probably knows not to break his hand.
I'm also not entirely sure Malkin would have stood up if it was Comeau or Spaling instead of Horny. And I want Spaling to succeed, but I don't know that he'd have cared as much.

@Bandwagon Fan 4401 You guys are nuts if you think he won't be picked up. Therrien didn't win a Cup with the same Pittsburgh team, had them out of the playoffs after being in the SCF, etc. and now he's coaching another team, after all. Terrible coaches are recycled all the time. Good ones (or those perceived to be good) are picked up quickly. He'd be coaching right now if the Pens hadn't waited so long to fire him.

@Gorangers0525 That's dumb. The site does pretty well on its own.
So you contributed a few comments on a mid-season game in November? Derrrrr. You over-rate your importance.

@Vlad2222 With what cap space? You do realize Bennett is a $900k cap hit only, right? I don't know if there are too many $900k top six forwards teams are looking to trade…
1 month, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://thepensblog.com/2014-archives/fancystats-through-13-games.html
@JamesBendishaw Thing is… you don't know that Bennett and Malkin won't show better chemistry. (Nor do I of course. Just pointing out that "because A was pretty good" doesn't preclude "B" from being even better in this scenario.)
@Blitzburgh Brian There are ~30 STARTING goaltenders. It's dumb to consider the backup salaries against what you pay your 60-game-starting goalie.

@Redacted_66 Quick makes $5.8M AAV, so I don't know that I'd call it a "steal."
But the rest of the post is agreeable.
@Bing_87 Harrington. From pre-season.

@PenGeno Then don't tag us please. :)
At DK's site the commenters hone in on the likelihood that Orpik was a big Despres detractor.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://thepensblog.com/2014-archives/recap-game-8-the-powerplay-rolls.html
Despres definitely had one of his better games. I think a big part of that could be that he got away from Scuderi for good chunks of time. If memory serves… (Oddly, Despres still had less time than Scuderi. The 2:40 SH helps #4 but still…).
@The Hockey Hooligan Adams was never going to be the one sent back, so I'm not sure Adams staying up punched Sill's ticket. Adams was always going to stay up with the Pens.
@rico I like what you're saying.
That said, of course, Kunitz and Crosby do often have a sort of mind meld thing. Perhaps you can hold off on that until Beau returns, and give Hornie a little more time to get the same mind meld thing going with Crosby too.
Or, if Malkin is unhappy now, throw him a bone (Kunitz). The third line can be Sutter + Comeau + Spaling or something. Should be fine. Fourth of Downie, Adams, Sill.

@Mrmcgibblets To be fair their lead against Philly was only one goal. :P
@Non Jussi was gone. Beau is hurt but looked good in pre-season.
Just you wait. Saying they're doing "just fine' doesn't mean they will continue to do "just fine." It's a present tense sentence. They're 3-1-0. That's the present tense, and they are doing "just fine."
FWIW, too: 6 goals 5-on-5, 6 5-on-4. Then there are 2 5-on-3, and one 4-on-5 for a league-leading 4.0 goals per game.

They should have edited the slow-mo endpoint to right after the save was made so you could instantly hear the crowd cheering. Duh.

@LoranMannIsTheMan @YorkPens Additionally, I'm getting awfully tired of the failed clearing attempts that go right to an opposition player.
Good ol' Despres looked horrible. I'm sad that he'll probably make the team. Too late to trade him + Scuderi for a bag of pucks?

@Hibbits @cblack66 Agree, Hibbits.
Additionally, he's got some solid third-line wings this year. Dude seems to be massively over-estimating his value.
Then again, so too is Spaling, perhaps. :)

And if somehow he does, then something went seriously wrong somewhere.

@Bandwagon Fan 4401 I'd rather replace him (as we did) with better hockey players than fast skaters who can't finish or win puck battles.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://thepensblog.com/2014-archives/brian-gibbons-signs-with-columbus.html
@brendannn Let's agree to disagree on Craig Adams, who WAS a good (never great) player. He's gotten old very quickly.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://thepensblog.com/2014-archives/video-of-how-the-james-neal-trade-went-down-reveals-the-penguins-had-another-trade-in-place.html
@firefox91 Not necessarily. Could have just been the fact that in COL he'll play on the NHL squad the whole year, or at least more so than in PIT.
Could be totally true AND not a "bad" thing for PIT or what it is like to play there.
@firefox91 Disagree. The comments above say it well: he DIDN'T compete very well, and did not use the time or the linemates he was given to prove otherwise. He doesn't match up favorably against the new forwards the Pens have next season.
There's a reason COL gave him less than a million bucks and a two-way deal. And that he took it. He's an AHL player. That's the reason.
@popemasta @bobbykimberley Interesting. I wonder if that was a "playing time" decision (he has been back and forth, AHL and up, etc.) or a "I hate the Pens" type of thing. I'm guessing the former, but I'm not absolutely certain.
@brendannn Do you disagree that Spaling > Adams, Glass, Vitale, and several others we had employed in the bottom six?
Because from where I'm sitting Spaling > Adams+Glass+Vitale.
Just because YOU never heard of him (a guy on a WC team) doesn't mean he doesn't improve the depth of the bottom six.
@brendannn That was a final confirmation. It wasn't just after they heard the trade offer.
