@RangersAndRadio @KevinTheNYRBlog No, only salary counts against the cap.

@RangersAndRadio He can still be given signing and performance bonuses on top of entry level salary so money could still factor into his decision.

@DPMohr64 @KevinTheNYRBlog @jasonshyer You're 100% correct that he has every right to test free agency, but I don't have to like it. I bet the Blackhawks disagree that he's not holding them hostage.

@jasonshyer All fair points, but it just rubs me the wrong way when a player who's paid no dues can hold his team hostage like this.

@JMK8363 I'd think the colored pads in contrast to the white ice are probably better for the goaltender because the shooter might focus in on the colors instead of the net.

@Say my Name @KevinTheNYRBlog I'm usually with you on this stuff, including not paying Callahan, but I definitely think Step is worth it.

Callahan never reached 55 points in a season...ever. Stepan has done it as a 24-year old. Not worth $6M now, but absolutely will in a few years. Worth buying out a bunch of UFA years  for a little more now.

@Say my Name @KevinTheNYRBlog I watched him be a point per game player down the stretch for a team who made the Stanley Cup Final. Probably would have had more points if Nash could, you know, score.

I have no problem overpaying a little for a homegrown guy entering his prime. Taking a chance for sure, but who are you replacing Stepan with? Not many going into their prime, 60+ point guys out there for less than $6 million per.

3 days, 7 hours ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

Reply

@Say my Name Stepan is just 24 and has increased in points every season. If he continues progression he'll be a 65 point player this year. He might not be the prototypical #1 center, but the guy can get the job done.

I'd be more than happy paying $6M per to a guy just entering his prime who could give me 65-75 points per for the next five years.

In the past we lamented the Rangers signing players coming out of their prime, now they've signed one going into it. I feel the best is yet to come for Brassard.

@BobDunne I actually love what Sather has done so far. Didn't overpay for replaceable UFAs and then filled their positions with cheap, competent alternatives. It also looks like he'll get all four RFAs signed for under $12M which isn't an easy feet. I think Rangers fans should expect the Blueshirts to again be fighting for the #2 or #3 seed in the Metropolitan Division.

@Wallace1 @KevinTheNYRBlog Actually, I'm probably wrong on this. Brassard would likely be looking for more on a long term deal as he'd be losing some UFA seasons.

@FrankCerbone You know that St. Louis led THE RANGERS in playoff goals, right?

6 days, 7 hours ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

@FrankCerbone What does on ice performance have to do with being a leader? You also left out he finished the regular season with 30 goals and the postseason with 15 points in 25 games. And if you didn't notice, that OT goal against Montreal was sort of a big moment as well.

6 days, 7 hours ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/

@FrankCerbone All true, but Girardi also sat there and watched McDonagh get blown up by Burrows last year and did nothing more than give the guy a shove.

@Blueshirts Corner No need to apologize. Your reasoning is beyond valid. While St. Louis isn't in the same stratosphere as Messier, you don't necessarily need a long resume with your team to be named captain. If you're a leader, you're a leader. Plus, St. Louis has gone to war with these guys. A long playoff run holds more weight in my opinion than a few regular seasons. Learn a lot more about a player when the season is on the line.
