That chart showing the % of FG Saunders v. 2002 and Saunders v. today is brilliant. That says it all.

If an artificial constraint had been put on this team's front office saying no one but draft picks, established stars and guys involved in a trade for established star could be on more than a 1 year deal, I can't tell you how far ahead we'd be.
I mention this because the KG era (the most important of Flips career) was squandered by stupid spending on long contracts for bench guys. Buddinger and K. Mart are on classic versions of this type of deal. Flip is better than Kahn and McHale at drafting. That is a feat that could only be accomplished by anyone with an internet connection.
Agree completely. Even if you like Payne I don't think the Wolves have any business including a 1st round pick in a deal for mid-level prospect who who isn't going to have a clear path to this years court time with all the young bigs we have.
As has been discussed plenty there is only so much court time for rookies to give. Even if the player they'd get with that pick is somewhat less talented than Payne that guy would be in a better position to succeed.

@WallyWorld Ha, the Wolves getting the #1 pick and having to choose between a vet and a young star. That'd be a new problem. I won't lose much sleep worrying about that situation.

@WallyWorld @Pants80 @Daddyfatsax Note: only because of the Dwight deal did Houston not pick up the option on Parsons. The Wolves could have had two years of him being a stud before he needed to be paid.
Also much like the botched moves at the end of the KG era not only were the Wolves cost those players it likely cost them keeping Love.

@WallyWorld @Pants80 @Daddyfatsax He looks like a genius if he stops there.
Sitting in the bar at TC with Bonk and CW with a dying phone conferring with strangers about what on earth was happening will always be my most enduring memory of the Kahn era.
@WallyWorld @Daddyfatsax The last bit about the 5 guys during the nuclear blast in 2011 was. Yes.
5 Trillion for LaVine. Epic start to his career.

@Daddyfatsax This really is the perfect season for the Elimination Game. All 15 guys will be in play.
I'm hoping that the return of Kevin Martin (likely after this game) will allow Flip to transition to the younger wing players Wiggins and Shabazz. He likely feels that early on they need a certain amount of veteran presence on the court at any given time. I don't disagree with this. You don't want the young guys to get used to playing irrelevant blowouts.
Hoping you are correct that Memphis was an experienced squad gave Flip pause on going to heavy with the young guys.
Rubio definitely looked sharper at the start of the game compared to the end. Is it just his nature to get get sloppier with fatigue? Needs to stay healthy and improve on that.
Someone tell Brewer that you don't have to force a bad shot/turnover after an offensive rebound.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://twolvesblog.com/uncategorized/2014-2015-season-opener-wolves-grizzlies.html
I think you are spot on about Brewer. Chase adds shooting, Shabazz adds toughness (in theory) but the things Brewer does well really are the things the you get from Wiggins right out of the box. The upside on playing him is to be an example of hustle, but that seems superfluous.
That said, guys will get hurt and Brewer will be there to play.
Flip seems to be the first Wolves leader in the last 10 years to get the obvious parts right. One of those things is to actually play the player you are building around. Rambis and Adelman wouldn't have Wiggins at #3 on the SF depth chart right now.
These early season opponents are lucky to be facing the Wolves before Bennett can be fully unleashed
The sunny side of Ricky's time with team Spain is that his international play can be a confidence boost. He's always been more comfortable there than in the NBA.
4 days. Funny with the Wiggins part a done deal I'm more curious about the supposed secondary trade for Thad. If they can get him for a 1st rounder + junk contracts it'll be a steal. With Young on an expiring deal no one else in the league is giving up more than that. Hence a legit prospect like Bennett is a drastic overpay for a 1 year rental.
8 months ago on Conversation @ http://twolvesblog.com/2014/august-e-mail-bantering-with-tim-and-mike.html
@Wolfenstein Agreed, Shabazz being in the rotation is far from a given.
8 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://twolvesblog.com/videos/timberwolves/despite-critics-wolves-get-great-deal-for-love.html
@slapdoghoops Larry Johnson's game was NBA ready when he hit the league. Nothing about Bennett's game is NBA ready. He averaged 19/11/3 as a rookie for goodness sakes. If anything Bennett is your classic decent at everything and master of nothing type player that often looks really good in college but doesn't make the leap (Turner, Evan).
I'd like to see him be a Wolf but lets not overreach.
"I think the Bulls can put together the best package with Boozer, Mirotic and 2 #1's (one is the Bobcats pick) coming back for KLove."If that doesn't make one want to vomit...

I'd actually forgotten about the famous Kevin Love outlet pass until this.

@WallyWorld How are we better built to sustain injuries? AK is gone and he did so much to hold back the dam. He was replaced with a just as injury prone Kevin Martin.
@DaveHoule Whew this is something.

@WallyWorld @CollegeWolf Hoping for the "Low ball, poison the relationship then come back with a panic $55m offer when Peko says he'll sign the QO." approach Kahn had prepared for the team before he left?

I missed your note on Olynyk on my first reading. Flip is dead to me.
1 year, 9 months ago on Wolves Trade for Muhammad, Deing in 2013 Draft
From the way people were talking about the picks taken after 10 it seems very likely that the Wolves could have taken CJ at 9 and moved up for Shabazz at 13 for their pick, 2nd rounders and cash. Heck maybe gotten Dieng too.
I consider AK gone, but we will see.

@WallyWorld I am VERY happy that Flip is going all in on shooting from the SG/SF position on this draft. Even if he is wrong about a Marshon at the very least he has a clue about what this team needs. Kahn would have said we need shooting then proceeded to take the best PF available with the #9 and lite the #26 on fire.
@WallyWorld I'd rather have Allen Crabbe if he is there.
...and my mock is in! I like that it is due today before more stuff leaks in the last 24 hours.

Need to wait for more rumor mongering closer to the draft but I can't wait to fill this out.

@WallyWorld Love this KCP video. I wish I saw more slashing but he seems like a very active defender with a good stroke from distance.
1 year, 10 months ago on Draft Preview, Pt. 2
@WallyWorld @Pants80 I don't doubt Zeller will be a useful NBA player. He is a PF. I'm not going to endorse the drafting of a PF. This team needs to take a SG oh so badly.
@WallyWorld @Pants80 Shabazz to me feels more like a Kings failed pick than a Wolves one. Kings like to take the hyped players who don't fit at all. Wolves like to fail by acting like they know better than everyone else (when they know much much less). Shabazz doesn't feel like a Flynn type bust, he is more of a guy who will be around the league averaging 16 and 4 for 7-8 years for the Kings, Wizards, Suns and Wolves of the world.
@WallyWorld You want Zeller over Shabazz? WHAT!?! Insanity. How is Shabzz a Kahn pick? None of Kahn's guys had his profile. KCP I'd probably prefer but not Len or Zeller.
@CollegeWolf @Pants80 Which is my whole point. If we can't get move up for Oladipo there the other guards could be a major upgrade.
1 year, 10 months ago on Draft Day Approaches
@CollegeWolf This is almost the attitude Kahn had though. He tried and tried to get the perfect guy while letting plenty of SGs who could have helped this team fall by him in the draft because they weren't perfect. We went Player X or bust and busted over and over. Turns out .75 * Perfect Player X can help a team plenty.
@WallyWorld @CollegeWolf I can't wrap my mind around the demise of Ben Gordon. How can a very effective scorer go to Detroit and completely have his soul and game removed.
Otto Porter will turning 20 next week which puts him on much surer ground than Wes who was in his low 30's when he hit the NBA. I'd rather see the team pick a SG than a SF though.
I'm also intrigued by Glen Rice with the #26. He seems like the sort of guy Golden State gets who fills it up off the bench and we lust over.
1 year, 10 months ago on Trade Up From #9? Unlikely
C.J. McCollum, Shabazz or Victor Oladipo need to make their way to the Wolves. Shabazz looks a lot like OJ Mayo 2.0 which isn't necessarily a bad thing at #9.
@WallyWorld @CollegeWolf @SeanMichaelPatrickMurphy It's like we reset preKG officially now. Always bad but always muddling to enough wins to not get a top guy. If Flip wants to completely the transition back he'll take a white center. There are plenty available in this draft.
If I was going to trade Luke for a prospect it'd be Alec Burks. Now isn't the time to go crazy off loading experience for youth but risks are needed at SG. That said I haven't really seen him play so I'm grasping at some straw to give a small silver lining to the 2013 disaster.

It'd be interesting to know how revenue of the two mini 8 team playoffs (14 games total) would compare to x-number of regular season games. Seems that you could drop 2 games and keep it even without a problem, maybe 3 or 4.
Think of how much more optimistic things would be here. We'd feel like if everyone is healthy by the last month we'd have a good shot regardless of what happens now.
2 years, 2 months ago on Are 82 Games a Few Too Many?
This business of the team stressing over guaranteeing minimum offers for D-League or FA players is embarrassing and preposterous.
2 years, 3 months ago on 1/2/13 - Wolves @ Jazz
The Kevin Love injury is still hurting us as well given that his shooting appears to still be a long ways from rounding into form.
@CollegeWolf Hmmm yes that would clearly be a stonger move.
Wait.. "whichever is later". Maybe that is dead to us.
2 years, 4 months ago on ***BREAKING NEWS: Brandon Roy to have knee surgery
If the player played fewer than 10 games1 that season, 60 days after his last game, or the one-year anniversary of his last game in the previous season, whichever is later.
The way things are going that could come into play for the Wolves.
On a plus side Roy may still have a better season than Andrew Bynum in Philly based off his 4 games of playing. Still like the signing. It was a risk going in and it didn't pay off, which is a bummer.
@CollegeWolf @WallyWorld @Daddyfatsax @SeanMichaelPatrickMurphy D-Charge hasn't taken his charges this year. This hasn't meant an improvement in his offensive game.
