Remember when Ken Burns taught our Civil War History class?
WHAT A BODY!
Did they say where the farm system ranked among other teams?
Let's do this.
Is a schellacking worse than a massacre?
What about Stephen Strasburg, or Jordan Zimmermann? Both pretty cheap players for what they have produced. Not to mention Ian Desmond...
Not that I'm biased or anything.
I remember this cover and often refer to it when people talk about sensations after just 40 games. 140 games is still too soon to be convinced that this is the real Mike Trout...but his amazing season is historical and newsworthy, unlike Francour's flash in the pan month.
Great post, couple of thoughts here:
1. Rizzo actually has never said the innings limit was 160, or 180, nor has he ever said he would re-consider his decision with the team in contention. He has had a plan in mind since February, and has stuck with it, the rest i the National media stirring controversy: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/post/stephen-strasburgs-innings-limit-a-refresher/2012/08/15/2c4c7dae-e6a0-11e1-8f62-58260e3940a0_blog.html
2. Rizzo also said that he would not tinker with Strasburg's starts to make him last longer, indicating that this strategy would defeat the purpose of the conservative pitching approach and could probably cause worse problems
3. That is true about Prior's shoulder being way more complicated than an elbow injury, but the concern on Washington's side is that by ramping his innings pitched from 44 to over 200 in one season, he could develop shoulder issues. It's not just that he's coming off an injury season, but its also the fact that he has NEVER had a full season.
4. As a Nats fan, I honestly feel equally comfortable that the Nats have a chance to win when Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann start. Strasburg's numbers are sexier, but I would be more than confident with Gio and Jay-Z going toe-to-toe with anyone else's ace in baseball. Jackson and Detwiler have been very good, all-be-it inconsistent at times.
So yes, a Strasburg, Gonzalez, Zimmermann punch is undoubtedly better than a Gonzalez and Zimmermann one-two punch. But people around here are confident that even without Strasburg, we are the World Series favorites from the National League at this point in the season.
If David Wright is hitting .323 (below his season average) can we really call him "hot"?
@kkolchack Any of these people" was referring to the people I named in the post. Not your comment.
@kkolchack @KevingJohnCostello I don't think any of these people, aside for Brown, are worth anything. The pipeline is good, although it is disappointing that Purke nor Rendon have been able to do much this year.
@KevinJohnCostello Yes...that's the point...Nationals fans aren't creating false hopes behind meaningless first-half Triple-A numbers...
I'm pretty sure I offended all of my neighbors with how loud I cheered after Harper's single in the ninth.
My favorite part is the Washington Nationals logo replacing the car logo. Team pride.
To be fair, Capps and Clippard represented the Nats at the All-Star game those years because they had no one else qualified to beat out a position player. The fact that the Nats have 3, and maybe 4 players this year, is technically quite an achievement considering...
Give credit to the Yankees, they have been very very good in the past mont. I'll still take Gonzalez Zimmermann and Jackson over Hughes, Pettitte, and Nova though.
Re: The Harper play. He could have been on second with Zimmerman/LaRoche/Morse and just one out. Instead bases empty two outs. Killer.
Those splits on Henry Rodriguez are ridiculous. Wonder how you can fix them?
Also, I'm still incensed that Porter sent Espinosa home when there was one out and Ryan Zimmerman on deck.
Really difficult game to watch at times. But it was a thrill to see Harper hit his first round-tripper. I don't know how I feel about the curtain call, what do you guys think?
