@morganwick appreciate that feedback but just feel like we're going to get to 2020 without anything popping at least on the national level. If SportsNet LA implodes, that could maybe correcta local bubble.

My favorite this week was the A's pleading for a review because the umpire (Mike Winters) forgot the count. He thought it was 2-2 and yet out of the 4 pitches 3 of them were foul balls. After 45 seconds of arguing, a review was commenced. Despite being the only game it took about 90 seconds to figure this out.

I complained to everyone I knew at Fox about this. My compromise was to nix it during actual highlights. It's somewhat interesting when I'm half paying attention to what's going in studio but during actual highlights.......it's insane that they want to decrease the presentation of that footage which is the most visually compelling and much bigger on all competitors. I've basically boycotted watching mainly because I'm getting a much inferior experience.  When you watch a movie trailer, you hit full screen. When you buy a tv, there is always somewhere there trying to sell you a bigger tv and helping you finance it. When people want to watch something, they want good picture quality and a large screen. I know FS Live and FS1 had to differentiate themselves but this was just a bad idea and I'm glad they're moving towards nixing it.

From this week's sports business journal:

"It’s clear that adding extra NFL games on Thursday is hurting the TV performance of other properties. But one result that may have been unexpected is its impact on the NFL’s other TV partners, as well. Fox’s total game viewership is down 5 percent; CBS’s is down 3 percent. Several industry sources blame the NFL Network’s expanded schedule for the viewership drop. They note the added games have taken two home markets — and their correspondingly big ratings — from the Sunday afternoon broadcasters and placed them on Thursday nights."

I totally agree, I'd go with football over the speech and many would too. But that is a huge draw at a pivotal point in the election. It was sure to pull a significant chunk of the football audience away for a chunk of the game.

The rumor is that FX isn't a player here because they don't have a built in clause with cable/satellite providers that increase their carriage fee if they add NFL games. NBC Sports Network and Turner channels do which allows them a bit more latitude bidding knowing some of the bid is essentially paid for ahead of time.

@CFBZ@morganwick I think a lot of the failure stems from not really understanding what brings people to websites with regularity. They seem to think that just the ESPN logo will break people out of their legacy communities and web behaviors. I find it somewhat comical as they're definitely spending a lot of money going in the wrong direction or at best nowhere at all. ESPN isn't really in the habit of acquiring anything other than television rights so I think they'll pack it in once 24/7 sells given that would put them one notch further from being on top. At some point they'll need someone who really gets the space and they seem to be dismissive of what everyone else is doing which they shouldn't be.

The fact that Berg is involved is a big deal. He gave Friday Night Lights life multiple times. After the pilot it was on the bubble and he pushed it through. After season 1, again on the bubble and Berg pushed it for a renewal. After season two, it was essentially cancelled, but Berg helped with an innovative deal for it to continue on DirectTV and then later on NBC. It was again on thin ice when the last two seasons were signed off on with an extension with DirectTV.

With his track record and ability to just work the Hollywood system regardless of the limitations of ratings/sponsors and so on, Berg is the right guy to be attached to this project. Should be awesome!

@AdamSpolane I understand the tier of games they got and read the ESPN book about the negotiations. Regardless, MNF shouldn't get third rate games. Regardless of the relationships with the major networks and their needs, MNF needs to have a baseline of quality for the long term growth of the league.

MNF used to be like a dessert to your weekend buffet of football. Now it's a shot of wheat grass. A fun size Snickers would do.

The bottom line is that the fans want a decent game. By serving up mostly crap, you reduce the relevancy of your product to one day of the week (except for Thursday in the second half). The NFL should strive to have some excitement and hype carry over from the weekend and to Monday regardless of the television relationships.

With the NFL and Olympics, I'd wager they'll be above 90 million and probably right on the tale of ESPN by 2012 summer. Increased households and carriage fees is the reason why they'll get the package imo.

I really appreciate the insight. 250 k, 3 guys, and a basement. You guys did very well with that formula. Do you recall how long the project took?

Migrating the content, commenting, RSS, fanshots, photo integration, etc. I recall you guys having a very robust 1.0 platform.

@Edo I don't know this individual at all but would say Bryan is correct. Getting your in house ad sales off the ground takes a certain type of personality and that's when you have a lot of "talent" thin out. They've been out selling effectively for 2+ years I believe so they're in a good place. No idea if they had issues in the past with ad sales hires. They are not one of the examples I heard or saw first hand to have these issues.

@Aaron Torres to be honest, I really fought the idea of getting rid of Tressel just because I don't think it really solves the problem. It's more of a punishment and reaction that appeases people.

The punishment fits the crime though but any chance we had to survive this went out that window when we completely duffed the initial press conference. We get an F in crisis management. To some degree I think it could have been possible to survive the infractions with him at the helm but from that moment on, the ball started rolling downhill. In that sense, at some point it was inevitable and we probably should have pulled the plug at some point rather than letting it play out.

I can't believe I am supposed to now get excited about the possibility of Meyer. We had 20+ players get tattoos/weed for signing their name/selling their stuff. Meyer had 20+ guys arrested.

@jerome.armstrong Very interesting Jerome. I knew that Trei and team were connected through online campaign work but it's good to get some additional insight into that angel funding as it obviously was a huge part of SBN's success.

Although a lot of the growth for SBN has occurred in the last 2 years, I suspect a lot of the decisions that led to that growth took place in 07 and early 08. I have always been very curious as to what those days were like especially given the interesting info that has come out about ESPN, Facebook, and Twitter's early days. It seems a lot of early history for successful companies stem from chaotic times early on.

Thanks for stopping by and I've finally completed my goal to get SBN, BR, and Yardbarker folks in one benkoo.com comment thread.

@chipramsey It's fine to root for your team and be a homer but I think you need to do this in the confines of respecting the game and the developments in them. Harrelson can gawk at any Sox play and that is fine but you can't only do half the job and that's where he fails imo

@bgoldberg good catch as obviously I don't think I'm the world's greatest jew. Man I don't even know if I am in the top half unless timed dreidel spinning was the only criteria.

I have some knowledge about some of the platforms mentioned but you're totally right that at a granular level, I just don't know what's under the hood.

I didn't mean to imply that i did but rather speak about the value each company is getting from their investment in platform. I'd love to get some insight into your investment into the B/R platform and how you guys measure the success of that investment.

@sportsblognet Good feedback as always Joe. Blogs are risky investments, top tier talent is expensive, and platform can be a total wash in terms of providing value over what we/others use.

Staying lean we'll continue to be a focus but you got to splurge somewhere.

I thoght about this but think there is probably some type of non compete in place. I would also imagine there will need to be a cooling off period before he could return. I think we could see that in time, but it won't be for awhile unfortunately.

@soul food Fox has Pac 10 rights so if you think about it, he may be able to do both.

Washington is in the Pac 10 and has a NFL team in the same city. The Bay Area has 2 local schools and a NFC team. LA has 2 colleges and will presumabely get a team at some point (unknown what team/conference).

Arizona has 2 pac 10 schools and a NFC team. Other schools are also in locations that could see Gus call a Saturday game and be in place to do a Sunday NFL game.

Comcast/NBC has been pegged my many including myself as a major player. However they're like an offensive juggernaut who has had to play defense to start a game via losing the coin toss and a fumble on a their kick return (NHL and Olympics). Soon they'll be on offense

I think the space is dominated towards the top of the spectrum by cynical and critical bloggers. That and people who love to run with rumors and speculation. However there are a lot of quality voices out there who cover sports in a more positive light. I see where he is coming from given how much our space tends to be characterized by a dozen or so main properties. Snark is good, especially when it's done right. But in the end you can't apply that style for every game, sport, and topic. In the end we need other styles to ring out and hopefully in time we'll get that balance.

@jd_new All of the above. If ESPN knew it was right to make the disclosure when covering the story online, why would doing the same thing on television be any different?

I actually think this works for Jenny Craig. I used to hear that music and listen as a new promo for a new installment may be airing and it would get me amped. I heard this music and got excited but alas....for nothing.

@bduddy I don't think you understood my post. They wouldn't do that if it was one of their own employees. Its cute because it involved international players, at an international event, and the broadcast footage was from an international channel.
