@ATCRyan@SA24 Playoffs? How about second half of the season? I don't know if your right but the dollar rules all. I have yet to go to a game this year, but the crowd seems so frustrated... I can see the second half of this season having abysmal attendance relatively speaking.

Soo frustrating.. Seriously, what's up with AV? Why can't he get in there and motivate? It's not his style, I get that, but when your team is as flat as the Rangers have been, doesn't it piss him off? Can't he just say "listen, get your shit together or you won't be on this roster"? he seems so resistant of that from the outside looking in. Great points, by the way. I think they built their identity last time by being resilient. Maybe it can creep back in.

This is an excellent article. Really well written and spot on. I love your Hank analogy but I can't get on your boat about how he should not be paid the way he is because he can't use his stick like Smith or Brodeur. I agree it's an issue and one he's paid for but still..  Sather has made some amazing trades, but one thing about him I hate: He will pay the sun and the moon for a FA but play hard ball with those in this organization. Not that he wants to be unfair, he just needs to save money after blowing it on UFAs. I don't know, maybe they need to get worse before they realize they aren't the team that went to the ECF's.

Reply

I disagree, in 3 -5 years, 8.5 million isn't going to carry the weight it does today. I think Lundqvist is one of the few things on Sather's resume with the Rangers that is without question a home run. I think you need your anchor and if anything, this is going to have a crosby effect where you don't even have to think about your best player for the rest of his career. A lot of money, but I didn't see how this could go any other way. I still believe he will have at least 6 more elite years and knock on wood, he stays relatively durable.

Yeah, it's strange. In trying to sort out my Lundqvist feelings I took the temperature of the Ranger fans I know and I was very interested to see fans not fully enthralled in their love affair with Hank. Part has to do with his lack of contract. I think a lot of us feel on the edge with Hank because why back him through thick and thin if he doesn't want to stay with the Rangers. I think the second a contract gets signed, the fan base starts to back him whole heartedly again. It's not that he doesn't deserve a mountain of cash and in my opinion he should get max contract, it's that it's clear he's looking at this as business first, heart second, and if nothing is done by trade deadline I think he's gone. The uncertainty of his future here makes everyone uncomfortable.. throw in his sub-par play and it's easy to make him an enemy.

All this about chris Niel is true, and I seem to remember him giving the rangers fits in the playoffs 2 years ago. I'd love to see him on this team and if it was a 1 for 1 it wouldn't bother me. I'd trade DZ for a  Neil-like player any day. The perception of playing this team would change so drastically.

@Hotfreak It's a fair point, but how many guys can you name on this team that have the assets he has? I'll take him even if he can't stick handle like malkin. Was just thinking that same thought Kevin.. I hope Richards really takes him under his wing. And can you blame Kreids for over thinking everything? One mistake in his tenure with the team and he was promptly stapled to the bench followed by being sent back down. I hope AV gives his guy the encouragement he needs and the breathing room to make mistakes so he doesn't feel like his career is in Jeopardy every time he makes a mistake. I want him to succeed if not for the fact that it would be so disheartening to see another 1st round pick just crumble. Also, is it conceivable that Slats wants him in the lineup as trade bait? I think it's a possibility.

Keep in mind too, it's all about contrast to what you had prior. I bet the rangers players are saying the same thing about how this is how they want a coach to be. If this is true, than maybe we need to re evaluate how much "time" is needed for this team to get back on track especially with Cally out of the lineup.

I like Pouliot and I like the Brass, Pouliot, Zucc line. Pouliot I think can find those spots in front of the net and battle for positioning and when you have two play makers around him and one that has the ability to thread a puck through a couple skates and sticks in Brass, Pouliot will find his name on the scoresheet. When I look at this lineup I'd love to see Krieder in for Pyatt and MIller in for Asham for good but I think I'm preaching to the choir.. Let these two work out their kinks on this level. I think they've proven they have the ability to dominate and a lower level. Also, Miller seems like a bit of a dick. Who says he can't have an agitation aspect to game or eventually be that Prust-type player that stands up for his team mates? More talented than prust and avery but he does seem like he has that sandpaper side to him. I'd love for him to use it.

@JustinRP37 @SA24 I loved watching them against LA. AV brings a fluid game with strong forechecking. If you look at his teams, they all move the puck fast and create open space. It doesn't take the Sedins to make his system and style dangerous. Other than the LA game where we saw the Rangers in rare form, I haven't seen anything great about AV as a rangers coach. I'm basing my comment off of what I've seen from him before. And you gotta be patient. It's not easy but I can see us in February with a team that's clicking saying "hey remember when we sucked earlier this year". Let's just see how this goes.

It's so unexplainable and uncharacteristic of this team to lose this way that it doesn't hurt that bad yet. It seems surreal. I think we have a team full of last year's brad richards. Not confident in the system = over thinking. I honestly feel they are tripping over their own heads. Hank... Can't explain Hank. And I love AV and what he can bring but it would great to get just a little more passion out of him. I'd like him to be pissed. Torts always made me feel better because I knew if I was pissed he was 10x more pissed. That said, AV will still be great for this team it is some seriously bad growing pains.

Right now 8 mil seems like a lot but in 3 or 4 years when the cap goes up at least 20 Mil which is the projection, It's really fair. A max contract would not bother me in the least bit. Especially when you see young up and coming D-men signing for 5 Mil. right now. In fact, I say just go for it and get this over with. We'll have money to spend. I don't know, i don't think it's as easy as saying "I'd Rather have the Sedin twins than Lundqvist". Sedin twins had Lungo/Schneider behind them. They don't even sniff success without their goalies playing world class (save for some games in the cup.. but look, they lost and Tim Thomas won) We need Lundqvist. Also, say we trade him and look to sign a top FA goalie. How much is that goalie going to cost? 5 Mil? I don't know.. I don't think this is as complicated as it seems with Hank.

Winter Classic tix were way more expensive. I went and had poor sight lines but the experience was great. My advice, shell out the cash for the best sight lines. It may seem like a waste (and maybe it is) but if you're going to go, pay the extra cash or it will be money wasted.

I went to Leetch jersey retirement game, as well as Graves. Had purchased tix from someone to Messier but I got robbed... either they were never sent or someone realized what they were and were stolen in the mail.

Not one game, but I had tickets to each home game in the 07 playoffs against Buf. Up until the ECF run 2 seasons ago, I can't really remember a time I was that proud of the Rangers in recent memory

Off the wall memorable game... I was at the Malik shootout winner against the caps. the 15 rounder or whatever. That entire shootout, I was convinced the NHL had predetermined who would win these and it was all a show because no one knew what kind of moves to do. It was the first year of the shootouts if I remember correctly. Then Malik.. Damn.

I don't think the keeping richards is connected to this simply because as you stated, Sather will probably match anything up to 6 Mil and get rid of someone else (prob zuc). But the bigger question is, is McD worth a higher cap hit than Richards at his best and equal to hank and nash? I think sather would walk from 7 mil regardless of the space and in turn do whatever he can to make that GM's life miserable. McD is one of our best players PERIOD but given his age/experience, he donesn't command that kind of cash.If you need more perspective, Duncan Keith has a cap hit of 5.5 mil this season. A comparable would be Doughty whi has a cap hit of 7Mil but he was a top 3 pick...and got overpaid.

I love this decision. We need a guy that is assimilated with this team that has his experience and leadership. New coach, fresh start. This is good for the team right now. And all the naysayers who are just chalking up the fact that we can buy him out next yr, don't get your heart set on that. Richards is going to need to know how good good enough is to keep him. And there needs to be a line. Because If you think a player is goin to come back motivated to be the superstar he once was (like we're hoping) when he hasn't been told that if he plays well enough he won't get bought out next year, your wrong. He isn't going to dig deep for a team that will most likely buy him out. What I'm saying is those hoping he will get bought out next year are essentially hoping he has another bad year. So lets understand this is Sather holding on to his commitment to Richards and essentially making Richards feel that if he plays as well as we know he can, he has a spot on this team through next year.

@ChrisRowan I hate to say it, but the Brodeur example is really good. There's a guy who without a doubt could be a wealthier goalie right now had he played super hardball. There are differences though in that Brodeur won a cup within his first 5 years with the club and saw a very different team in front of him than hank does. Hank feels way more pressure to win (personally) than Marty. Point being, had the devils not won the cup in 95, I wonder if the Marty story would be different. Great point though he loves his devils as much as we would hope Hank loves his rangers.

I love this hire. And I'm not concerned about his "lack of success". He led VAN to play a dominant game. They were a dangerous team even at their worst under him. Their lack of playoff success has to do with the character in their locker room I believe and many feel they need a kick in the pants right about now (enter tortorella) but I think he is going to bring a strategy to our team that really plays more on the speed and skill we have (still missing gaborik. I'm a broken record, shhh). Would love to see Mess or leetchy as an assitant. Preferably Mess. Leetch is more cerebral and so is Vigneault. Mess would be a nice contrast, bring a ton of respect, and help Callahan with his transition. Has it's drawbacks but I can see that combo working real well but I don't expect that to be announced soon.

If he is available, I'd love to see him as the Rangers bench boss. I loved what I saw on 24/7. Much more personality than I expected. And I think he would be great for this team. He won the Jack Adams 2(?) years ago because of his coaching job WITHOUT his superstars. Shows me he knows how to get the most out of his players. The Pens playoff failure I don't think falls on his shoulders squarely. I think they have attitude issues and it's pretty clear Crosby is not as level headed and mature as most people want to think he is, since he is compared to ovi so often. He should feel some responsibility the way Torts was partly responsible but I'd welcome him with open arms. I think he's as good, if not better, than Vigneault.

@gravey94 @SA24 @ThrSage But you make mention to the fact that you would be pissed at him because he doesn't love this team enough if he leaves to go to a contender, but it's okay in your eyes to leave for money. To me, you turn the money down to stay with your team if you really care about winning with them. Not turn the team down for money. I would be more upset if he left for money.. but at the end of the day, he's upset and rightfully so and I think that is where his comments came from. I think he should retire a ranger and have his number hung next to Richter but my point is simply, I can't watch this team rely on him and watch him get so frustrated and not expect him to consider playing elsewhere. Hank is going to get his money, he is not guaranteed a cup, and that's what he wants. I think for what it's worth, he stays a ranger and after moving on from this season he realizes he wants to win here. No one wants to lose him and I think we're all a bit freaked he actually showed some honesty about how frustrated he is with his team.. which he usually doesn't do.

@ThrSage @gravey94 I 100% disagree with you.  Every NHLer wants to win a cup (think Bourque and Iginla) and they may be controversial, how many times have you looked at Hank's play and thought that this guy is doing everything on his own. He is in the prime of his goaltending career, and is valued as one of the best goalies in the world. Why would he stay with a team that continues to force him to do it all himself. And to you, it somehow makes sense that he would leave for money?? that would be okay in your eyes?? Make no mistake, Every pro athlete wants a championship, and I have no doubts that hank wants one in NY, but this will likely be the last contract he negotiates in his prime and I would blame Sather before I blamed Hank for leaving this team.

If we had anyone who could finish in this series, Zucc would have 3 or 4 points by now. He has been one of the only bright spots of our forecheck and he has made some excellent passes from behind the goal line to open men in the slot but the finish hasn't been there. I said if he missed the playoffs, he'd be on thin ice for next season but advancing to the 2nd round has him as a lock for about 20ish games ( abot 1/4 of the season). After that, if they are still underachieving, I think he goes. It's still enough time left in the season to salvage it but I think there's no chance he is fired prior to that given their playoff "success".

I wonder though, would Sather consider hiring another assistant coach in the off season to take over the PP? Someone who is a specialist in that area. I know it would bruise Torts' ego big time but maybe he/we need that? I don't recall it being done really so I don't know how realistic that is.

That said, I'm a big believer in his upside but I think they are handling him wrong. He is not ready to be the PP QB or a top 4 D-man and hopefully with Staal eventually getting healthy and Moore continuing to play well, he and Moore can have some friendly compentition. Either that or we trade him while other teams still think he's great (?). Right now, he is just not mentally ready. If he has around 10-12 mins of ice time, I think we all love him again. But what has he been getting pre-John Moore breakout? 18-20? Just not using him properly.
