They're not free to the people paying for them.
I'm not sure I believe that local governments have historically "slapped the wrists" of drunken drivers who kill bicyclists, but in this case, a diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome might shave several months off the sentence.
The arrest took place across town, and your link doesn't identify the arresting agency.
@Red Star I don't know who made the arrest in the Akers killing, do you? But I have been informed by TPD Sgt. Tim Beam that Tucson police will not follow up in cases of assault in which a bicyclist can provide a plate number and vehicle description while not being otherwise able to identify his attacker. The meeting took place in Regina Romero's ward office, and there is no website devoted to it. The discussion was an offshoot of a BAC meeting (February 2008?) in which the issue was discussed at length and in public.
The helmet detail comes out of left field
I'm used to it being closed. And the Highland underpass is 300 yards away.
Abigail deserves hard time. Instead, it is open season on bicyclists.
Surely McKisson must win one of these.
@Red Star I agree, TucsonVelo has been a good news source. In the comments after Wren's report, a visitor from Boulder heaps disdain on TPD for failing to investigate a motorist brandishing and firing his gun in traffic some two weeks ago. Seems crazy, right? But it's all too common. This past summer, Tucson police mocked me for NOT HAVING A WITNESS when a motorist pointed a gun at me and, when provided the license-plate number, were not interested talking to the vehicle's owner.
