Yeah, no. I mean it's possible, yes, but it could be really really hard. I agree with bartering, frugal living, saving and all, but at one point, I'm gonna need money. I'm used to a comfortable life where everything is at my disposal.
I think it would be impractical to spend like a $100 on a bouquet of flowers alone, especially if you have a family already since you can use that money for far more important things in your home. You can always find a way to make things special even without spending too much, right?
Some of the things I heard from some of my colleagues is not never max out your credit card, avoid applying for too many loans when you haven't paid the others, and of course, always make sure to pay your cc balance every month in full.

I think the key to that is to go make sure that you are properly informed. What you need to do is to fully understand how both funds work to know which one best suits your strategy for investing. It will make a whole lot of difference.
