Absolutely they were, but keep in mind out of Percy's 677 yards receiving, 531 were after the catch. We use Percy more like a Darren Sproles. If people don't want to accept my word look at Darren Sproles numbers over the past couple years. I can assure you he isn't making 10mil (around 3.5 mil). The vast majority of "pass" plays to Percy are actually more of extensions of the run game. There are no reads, or 1st option, 2nd option, etc. It's a "this play is going to Percy". This, in a way, hurts Ponder's development as true QB, and makes us more predictable because we already have 25-30 of those plays per game going to Adrian. I don't think people realize how much $10mil is. I'm not paying $10mil for versatility. The reason Calvin, Bmarsh, and Adrian make that much is because you know what they can do and can't stop it. They are elite at one thing. They make plays on 3rd and long (regarding the first two). I can mask versatility that with multiple players. You need a slot guy? Danny Amendola (5 mil). You need a guy who has great YAC and can make plays? Reggie Bush (4 mil). You need a good KR/PR? Draft Honey Badger. I just replaced Percy with 3 different players for the same price, on top of added depth at RB and helped our secondary (not that these are anywhere near the signings I'd want the Vikings to make, just using them as examples in this year's FA class). Not to mention the whole "eggs in one basket" theory, of when Percy gets hurt, we get affected in all 3 of these areas, compared to only one. This has nothing to do with any off-field issues either. We would be making a big mistake having two non-QBs on offense getting paid $10+mil per year sucking up 20%+ of our cap. If Percy is willing to come down into the $7mil range, that's what he's worth and now we can talk. Percy DOES NOT DESERVE Adrian money.
2 years ago on Even Adrian Peterson Thinks You're Stupid if you Want to Trade Percy Harvin
You are right. It's the fans who actually think about Salary Cap issues instead of their heart who are the problem. Your right, though, let's pay two guys 10+mil to provenly cut into each other's production. I love Percy Harvin. I think he is phenomenal and we won't get equal value back for a guy this talented. That being said, as long as AD is here, we are a traditional running team. Percy's skill sets will forever be underutilized in MN, an underutilization I'd be willing to pay $3mil for, or $7mil for. Not $10+ mil for. Who actually thinks paying Percy 4x the money as last year (as much as AD) is a good idea long term and will get us closer to the Super Bowl? We still don't have a true #1 WR then.
