I have always believed in the philosophy that a no-hitter late in the game needs to be broken up by a no-doubt-about-it base hit. This is a play I would have ruled an error in the first inning or the eighth, regardless of the situation in the box score.

I remember listening to the Penn State season opener while driving out to Harrisburg to visit some friends, getting periodic score updates from this one. It was not until hours later I learned Michigan ended up losing this one. This is one of the all-time games in the sport, at least in the modern era. That Appalachian State team was really good though. I would not count on that lightning striking twice this season, because this year's team is far from the caliber of that FCS powerhouse in 2007.

Why rush a decision without knowing for sure what the best option is? This is not Rob Bolden vs Matt McGloin part two, but I can understand where the negative reaction comes from. O'Brien is working with two quarterbacks ho have never played a game at this level, so I don't think a 2-QB rotation at the start of the year would be all that terrible until one separates from the other.

This show line-up reminds me of a college football program trying to form an identity by throwing whatever they can think of together and seeing if it works. While ATH has lost it's sizzle for my tastes, I'm not sure this show has enough to hit the ground running to make a serious run at ESPN's core evening programming. But, we'll see.

@Betsy A Pudliner While Sandusky is clearly the most vile person in all of this, let's be real about this and admit that this is more than a Sandusky issue. Obviously we will let the courts play out but it sure seems difficult to argue that some representing Penn State University did not execute a proper response to potential harm being doen on their campus.

Like it or not the alleged actions and inactions of Graham Spanier, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz does reflect poorly on the university, and casts a darker cloud over the university. I ma not suggesting the school cannot survive (I would argue it has and will be just fine in the long term). I'm merely extending the question and conversation. Curious how others feel too.

@reh9993 I agree with you to a point. I still believe Paterno could have, and perhaps should have, done more. I would like to think I would have done more in the same situation but who knows. As far as Paterno could have been concerned, the issue was dealt with appropriately.

And while Paterno was a recipient of plenty of national attention, which comes with being the face of the program, it really is hard to argue that Paterno should not have been fired given the circumstances. The manner in which it was handled, on the other hand, could have been done differently and I think that, more than anything, is what continues to rub some people the wrong way.

Why did amaro give Kendrick two years? Because he is a decent option for long relief out of the bullpen and more than capable of making a start or two if needed. We don't know if Vance Worley will suffer a sophomore slump or not, or whether Joe Blanton will bounce back to his innings-eater capabilities. If a start struggled and needs time off, Kendrick will be the first option out of the pen, and considering he showed some improvement last season that seems like a good option to have.

I shared my thoughts on Kendrick over on Macho Row yesterday: http://macho-row.com/2012-articles/february/kyle-kendrick-signs-two-year-contract-with-phillies.html

Put anti-Rovell sentiment aside here. What he did was perfectly fine, initially. If what he says is true, then he did his own reporting and confirming, as any good journalist would have done, AND he credited the reporter who first reported it, as we would like to see done everywhere.

Sandomir is right in that the way Rovell spread his message did come off a little arrogant, though. But I'm fine with it. What gets me is how Rovell feels compelled to RT what Sandomir is arguing to him, and throw his own input in before the RT, thus talking down to Sandomir in front of all of his followers. If he could just simply reply to Sandomir so we didn't all have to see it, that would have been mroe appropriate.

Of course, I didn't write the rules of Twitter, right?

It's really quite simple. Andrew Luck is the best player, regardless of the opponent. Better stats? Maybe not, but to me it's not about just the stats. Without Luck, Stanford is in the middle of the pack. I think almost any other team you could take that player out of the picture and hav close to the same result, and to me that includes Kellen Moore at Boise State and RGIII at Baylor.

Just my opinion.

I do think the Big East needs to roll the dice with a hard gamble on an ultimatum with Notre Dame. It probably won't work, but at this point it is a critical move that could pay dividends. But a conference can't let one school take control like this. We see what happened in the Big 12 with the Longhorn Network. If NBC is interested in picking up a Big East football contract, that could change things as well.

USC took control of the area but there still should have been plenty of resources to buiuld a pretty decent program across town.

UCLA will be back some day. Their athletic department is too successful for it not to be. I think with the new division format we may see the Bruins start to climb back in to the Pac 12 picture, but I don't see it happening for another few years.

We're being technical here, but the exit from the Big 12 is contingent upon being accepted by another prospective conference. But they will be accepted so I guess they are as good as gone.

The question for me is now what happens with Oklahoma. Assuming Texas is comfortable with the possibility of being an independent with their own ESPN-aided network (good for them), then Oklahoma becomes the Albert Pujols of the college football realignment process. Every conference should want them, and every conference would benefit from having them.

Forget Missouri, I'm going after Oklahoma if I'm the SEC, Pac 12, or Big Ten.

I failed to respond to this chain of conversation while I was preventing my parents' basement from flooding, so I'll add my two cents quickly here in the comments section.

I absolutely love seeing a few marquee match-ups early in the season, including week one. Sure, they are more attractive than games against FCS opponents but they also serve as a measuring stick for each team. If you start the season against another Top 25 program it is your chance to prove to everyone just how good you are, and that can set the tone for the remainder of the season. And let's face it, if you are good enough, you can recover form a loss in the polls if needed.

For schools like Boise State, this may be the one chance during the season in which people will take them seriously as a power program. They need games like this to generate some media attention, and I'm OK with that. Go out and schedule these tough games, even if it is more for a paycheck in some instances. Win them and earn more respect. Lose them and I don't want to hear about your one chance on the national stage and disrespect.

I would love to see some of the conferences organize some form of pre-season deal similar to what we see in basketball, with the Big Ten-ACC challenge for example. Set up one week in September and have your conference go toe-to-toe with the other in a series of games. If it helps getting some more SEC schools to visit the North, I'm all for that!
