1 year, 8 months ago on Sacramento Kings 121, Phoenix Suns 112 — Bring on the lottery
ONeal can outplay Duncan. Duncan is also old too.
Parker and Ginoili look good because their team was nicely built. The case was similar that if Gortat play 10 years with Nash in pick n roll, he is a close to stoudemire too.
1 year, 8 months ago on Phoenix Suns 105, San Antonio Spurs 101 (OT) — O'Neal takes over
@john manhole Coach D'Antoni was able to play Stoudemire as Center. Work the pick-n-roll pair with Nash.... plus 3 perimeter shooters (Marion/ Johnson/ Bell/ Richardson/ Barbosa). It was good but Stoudemire didn't play good defense. It was a success until those guys ask max deal one by one.Coach Gentry twist it little bit by play Stoudemire-Nash combo.... with a streched center-shooter Frye.... plus 2 other perimeter shooters (Richardson/ Dudley/ Barbosa/Dragic). It was Gentry most success, peaked at 2010. That's all he can do as a coach without other big twist. Then, Gortat is not a good replacement of Stoudemire and premier shooters are gone one by one too. With Nash gone now, pick-n-roll was a history. A successful model should be the spurs type twin centers kind to maximize the best player Dragic as Parker. If Hunter is doing this now, the team is on the right track.
The model to simulate is very simple. It is the Spurs and you can be a playoff team for sure. They are basically Tim Duncan + a functional big man (Robinson/Mohammed/McDyee/Tiagor) + (Tony Parker) + bunch of average shooter/players.
In the suns, Goran Dragic is kind of better than or equivalent to Parker. And right now, Gortat and ONeal are going to be inside presence pair and it seems they are pairing okay so far in this game and the previous Grizzles game. It looks very similar. You will need the two big active tall big men to make this effective. Whenever there are someone miss their shooting, the middle men will do their jobs to battle the rebound and score. If you have good and effective perimeter guy like Giniboli or Jackson, you are a contender instantaneously.
This game and the previous Grizzles were key. They show that this team can compete provided that someone is playing ONeal's role to have 2 active centers to do the rebounds and inside scoring. If ONeal leaves this team after the season or next, the FO needs to find someone to do ONeal's role. Beasley or Morris should be the ideal candidate for that if they are not playing as SF with minimum rebounds and inside scoring. ONeal is listed 6-11 and Beasley/Morris are listed 6-10. Not that far to work as ONeal's role while Scola is only listed in 6-09. If they cannot take that role in the remaining season with some progress, I will draft some big men to do that roles with one of the lottery picks.
Obviously the 3 pointers and mid-range scoring are also weak areas as it showed that the worst of 1-14 3 pointers in the previous Hornets game but the inside presence is a higher priority of course.
This coach really dare to play 2 centers at the same time that you would never see in Gentry. It is so bad that the FO let Lopez go eariler. Last time they did it was to foul out Marc Gasol in Grizzles.
To smartly use the cap, the teams should only sign minimum 13 players. 15 players is kind of too much and hurt the flexibility of the cap. This waiving Morris-Zeller example shows that it will hurt the cap space slightly through trade.
1 year, 9 months ago on Goran Dragic needs help; Suns' lack of deals an NBA trend
@SkyBill40 The remaining of this season is winning by losing. The tasty bite is the lottery pick. As long as the coach is playing the young players heavily, they are on the right track.
1 year, 9 months ago on Boston Celtics 113, Phoenix Suns 88 -- Another blowout
Great.... with the new Morris twin on board and this blowout loss. The coach will have to think of a new rotation and lineup.
@Michael Schwartz Great. Thanks Chief.
1 year, 9 months ago on Marcus Morris trade adds another future asset at low cost
Obviously the Morris twins is a 3 & 4 pair, not 4 & 4 if you want to use them in the same time. It means either Tucker or Scola will have a reduced role provided that the Beasley project is also a priority.
1 year, 9 months ago on Grading the Phoenix Suns' trade deadline deals
Nice article but it should be 3 first rounders coming, instead of 2. One from Lakers in Nash trade. One from Grizzles in Lopez trade. It should be around 8M salary there.
@TySun OKC is upgrading Eric Maynor to Ronnie Brewer with the cost of his very late 2nd round pick. Brewer has a better RPG, SPG statistic and taller. Ronnie Brewer is kind of a Jared Dudley playing at 15 MPG instead of 30 MPG. Actually, you don't really need 45 MPG Jared Dudley kind of support. Saving the 15 MPG for the coming 1st round SG is more fruitful.
1 year, 9 months ago on Sebastian Telfair traded to Raptors for Hamed Haddadi
@TySun The Josh Smith thing was a total BS. There is obviously surplus on the forward dept. There is no reason to invest heavy dollars on Josh Smith, even signing him as an around $10M Free Agency.
@SkyBill40 It means he prefers to keep 1st round pick and he values 1st round pick cautiously. You can see that they were not trading Eric Gordon with picks and said they didn't want to take a step forward and another step backward. However, he never says never. If there is a very attractive deal on the table, he will trade those picks but it needs to be very attractive deal for his point of view at least.
@SkyBill40 Disagree. Babby said he will take his first round pick as his blood in the interview yesterday.
@SkyBill40 Taking the Wesley Johnson example, it may cost you a 1st round pick to dump an unserviceable lottery pick.
@effyewe You will need him dedicated more at the low-post where he is the most effective. There is a chart showing his FG% in various area. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1537878-one-major-adjustment-phoenix-suns-must-make-in-seasons-second-half
1 year, 9 months ago on Luke Zeller released by Suns to complete Marcus Morris deal
Nice fill in.... but I think the team should draft another Center in June.
That will focus the coach to play Beasley at Center. That will increase his FG% and hence consistence and confidence. Then, the Morris Twins, Tucker and Scola can share the forwards minutes evenly.
NO way to waive J.O'Neal. Rarely use Garret or Zeller are more possible candidates.
1 year, 9 months ago on Suns trade rumors: Rockets' Marcus Morris traded to Phoenix
@TySun @4everis2long Yes, projected to be #5, #13 and #25 as of today. http://www.nbadraft.net/2013mock_draft
1 year, 9 months ago on Phoenix Suns 102, Portland Trail Blazers 98 -- The dying embers of the fire
Regarding Marshall, the team needs to pull Garrett back to the active list to compete with Marshall ASAP. It seems that he may be better than Marshall.
@the real shazam Not exactly, you only need to secure Houston spot.
I'm very disappointing at Marshall. He was supposed to be the second best point guard playing after the best point guard Lillard in the previous draft. He should be very passionate against him every games. Anyway, the offense focal point was done correctly in this game. He should be focus on best and 2nd best players of Dragic and Scola as the primary options. Wesley Johnson just click to do the inconsistent Mike Beasley bench scoring to be good enough to win over Blazers.
1 year, 9 months ago on Preview: Phoenix Suns (17-36) at Portland Trail Blazers (25-28)
So, MAX deal on him should be similar to Amare's at about 20M/yr? For that amount of money, his output needs to be 6~7 times of Scola.
1 year, 9 months ago on Josh Smith trade rumors involving Suns crop up again
I think no team will be interested in Telfair. He is not good enough for contending team as a backup PG. Rebuilding team will be interested in developing their young PG. The only question on Telfair would be whether this management will keep him after the season. The FO did a similar thing to keep shannon brown in the last off season if he asks to stay in a bargain deal.
1 year, 9 months ago on To trade or not to trade: Sebastian Telfair
The most desperate team should be the Lakers. They are shortage in the big men department with injury in Gasol and Hill. So, I will say they are the most possible buyer for Gortat but Suns shouldn't trade him to let them enter playoff for a better lottery pick.
1 year, 9 months ago on To trade or not to trade: Marcin Gortat
Gortat is too old and not very productive. He should be a minimum deal player after this contract.
@john manhole @effyewe I think Telfair fits the culture bill that this stupid FO loves. In interview, Babby said he loves his attitude. True that he is not the future but this FO/coach is not determined to develop Garrett neither.
1 year, 9 months ago on Los Angeles Lakers 91, Phoenix Suns 85 -- Black unis fall short
Real keys for a Phoenix victory…
1. Howard injury
2. Laker played back-to-back game
3. D'Antoni's Stubborn on game change
1 year, 9 months ago on Preview: Phoenix Suns (17-35) at Los Angeles Lakers (24-28)
Gortat to Jefferson is just a slightly upgrade but it may cost more in the Suns side. Gortat is also a relatively big contract in the Utah side. I don't see why they want him at all.
1 year, 9 months ago on Al Jefferson and Gordon Hayward interest Suns, Coro reports
The real season low worst performance should be a loss by about 10 point against Hornets few days ago. The team was shooting 1-15 in the 3 pointers against a bad team. It is very hard to beat that. The next game against Lakers is big. Lakers may hit their panic button for some insane trades if they lose to Suns.
1 year, 9 months ago on Oklahoma City 97, Phoenix Suns 69 -- A low of lows
This same yahoo guy BS the rudy gay too.
1 year, 9 months ago on Iman Shumpert wanted by Suns, according to NBA trade rumor
Two consecutive loss against OKC should take the Suns to the destination spot #15 in the west. Followed by beating Lakers in the next game that would be a nice drama to trigger the Lakers to do some insane trades before the trade deadline. Wait and see.
1 year, 9 months ago on Preview: Phoenix Suns (17-33) at Oklahoma City Thunder (37-12)
To draft a new PG, you will need to try both Marshall and Garnet first. There aren't much PG talent so far so I seen. So, the first consideration should be the Center or SG in the draft.
1 year, 9 months ago on New Orleans Hornets 93, Phoenix Suns 84 -- Too much Mardi Gras
1-15 on 3 pointer against a poor defensive team should be the worst performance, the season low.
Altantic Hawks also outbounded Grizzles today with foul trouble in Gasol. It seems that teams know their zero depth in backup Center and the Grizzles shoul be going to sink. It means Portland or Lakers may be the #8 spot later and the Suns may not receive their first round pick then.
1 year, 9 months ago on Preview: Phoenix Suns (17-32) at New Orleans Hornets (15-33)
@4everis2long Not too bad, I believe the top pick the Suns draft this coming draft should be a Center and Gortat shouldn't stay here very long. Losing is winning here, especially losing to NO here.
@4everis2long This FO was willing to pay MAX to Eric Gordon (PPG 16.9 this season) but not willing to pay >$4~5M/year on JO Mayo (PPG 17.8 this season). For Lopez, he wants playing time but the previous coach prefers using Gortat.
Marc Gasol gets foul trouble and the Grizzles has zero depth at Center because they traded them earlier.
It turns out the Q4 rebounds is 12 PHX to 5 MEM. It converts to Q4 31-19. PHX won them barely. The coach just found their weakness through the game.
