I would add to that: practice and come from a place of respect. The practice part comes to mind right now as I prepare to tell a rather annoying over-communicator to stop. Clearly my words are going to have to be more gentle than that, but we have to get to the point at some time. It might seem obvious but if you are giving someone feedback and you don't start from a place of respect, you will come across as rude and out of line. Talk to them just like you would like them to talk to you.
