Coach used to say....when you're "thinking...you ain't playing".
Big hits make players "think" when they are on the ice, especially when there is a big hitter out there.
Fear and intimidation.....it cannot be measured.
Take the hit below.....Stevens on Kozlov.......
That one hit took the all wind out of the Red Wings sails.....all the chirping the Red Wings were doing....stopped. And Stevens then tells the Red Wing bench...."you're next".
You don't think that hit changed things? Think again......
My Coach never cared about Corsi stats......if you weren't scoring goals.....you had better be laying people out...or you weren't playing. Pure and simple. Damn that quote by Coach was used every single day......."if you ain't scoring, you better be hitting".
Look...people want to get rid of fighting....fine. Can you at least leave the hitting alone? Dang.

And what does this hit below do?
Sets a tone for the game......
Removes an opponent from the game (clean hit)
Hey Worlds......forget about wearing a player down during a series...this is how you wear a player completely out on one hit. Grabovski learns the oldest lesson in hockey..."Keep your head up"

Islander game analysis........
Won't address any physical aspect....time to look at the D. Last three games...as a former d-man...I hang my head.
After watching the last three games.....AV should get all hid Dmen in room.... close the door and throw a freaking chair at them. The constant turnovers, terrible decisions....not being in position. He should she rip his D-corp a new one.....then get them on the ice....and skate them til they puke, EVERY LAST DMAN.
What is going on is unacceptable. AV....its time to get your D-Corp's head straight. I don't know where they've gone as a collective group mentally....(oh, the terrible decision making and passes..ugh)....but its time to bring this core back to reality.........
AV... its simple.....keep the D-men after practice......and blow the whistle.
"EVERYBODY ON THE LINE""!!!!!!!!
And then bag-skate them til they puke. That will bring their focus back.

Very nice!! Malone and Glass on the 4th line....my phone call to AV must have worked!! Smart move...Islanders will be looking to shake the glass tonight.........
I will not be here tonight tho. I'm sure many here will be shedding a tear. ;)
But Mrs.McPhee and I work different schedules and tonight she has the night off.........
So, tonight.....I'm not McPhee........
Tonight.....I'm McLovin. ;)
So, how can I find the right speech to unite my night and the Rangers-Islanders game...especially with Malone and Glass on the 4th line.......and make it sound coherent?
No speech.....just a song. Enjoy the game tonight boys and girls. And Joe, release that Squirrel....and let him do what he do.
Sometimes a clean check has to be addressed....especially a hit on a skilled player. it's a judgement call by the "goon"...pure and simple. Absorbing checks, just like throwing them...drain you. You don't want your skilled players getting drilled. Now, you can't fight every time a skilled player is touched...but depending on how big the hit is...who threw it...yes....I would respond.
And there's also the possibility of a player getting hurt on a clean check....it does happen. And you don't want that happening to your skilled players. I've been involved in two games...where two clean checks ended the career of two promising players who would have played in the NHL.
One, was a teammate of mine..Stilly. Pure goal scorer....sniper. Incredible wrist shot. Anyways.....the puck was dumped in the o-zone....Stilly got their first....the Dman was a pretty big guy...215 or so...Stilly.....maybe 190. Anyway, Stilly got absolutely crushed on the boards.....pure clean hit....shoulder to shoulder.....and I saw him just crumple. Guy crushed his shoulder...multiple brakes...if I remember correctly...think the clavicle bone was badly damaged. Anyways, no penalty on the play....and their shouldn't have been one called. Just a big, clean hit.
Now, do you think me and my teammates let that hit go unchallenged? I was on the ice when it happened, so I came flying at him gloves off. It was a pretty good scrap....he knew someone was going to challenge him on that hit. And also, Stilly was my friend. Emotions play a big role in it too.......
Well, we went after that Dman for the rest of that game. And we responded to any other big check that team threw for the rest of the night.
Stilly never played another game.....all on a clean check....which is why you'll see "goons" like me respond to a big clean hit. You try to keep those hits limited when it comes to your skilled players.

Absolutely right about Phaneuf needing a visit.....but that happens often with our club...not enough visits.
As a former "Goon", I would like to address the point you brought up about fighting other guys when nothing has happened. You're right....we do that often...especially early in the start of a season. It's got nothing to do with trying to justify our jobs. It's actually a very simple reason....and its why you see it often early in season...and pre-season games.
You'll be at home watching a game....all of sudden a few minutes into the game...without a check being thrown....the two "goons" line up opposite each other....next thing you know the gloves are off and we're going at it.. The explanation is.......
" We're getting our work in"....simple as that. It's not like we're dropping the gloves at practice all the time, going at it with our teammates. I played D..third pairing...i wasn't a great d-man....but i was reliable...not a liability. No offense from me....just played a stay at home, positional game....but i played it very nasty...cause that's what my clubs needed. And I fought....a lot. But you need to stay sharp in the fighting game. its not like i can hone my fighting skills in the off-season....plus there's the wear and tear on the hands.....and at practice....yeah a fight happens every now and then....but its not like we have fighting drills..lol.
Fighting on skates....not the easiest thing to do. One thing very important, in a hockey fight when you square off....its that first clutch of the jersey....you time it wrong...you're going to catch a beating 80% of the time. So, "goons" have to practice their skillset.....and that's why you'll see those "meaningless" fights. It has to be done to stay as sharp as possible.

hey..that was mine ;)
Say Hi to AV for me ;)
what did i do wrong now? demand the team show some heart in front of their fans? Whoops...my bad. I'll tone it down :)
LOL....happens to Nash on almost a nightly basis
With the way AV coaches and our lack of toughness,,,,I'm suprised someone hasnt taken a run at Nash's kid yet
@Say my Name @IcyCup @Gershon
Just telling the truth.....if Capuano really wants to get ugly.....he can bring up Gallant....EEEK.
No Islander PJ's...my brother wears them.....you think I'm bad....my brother also played......and he wasnt nice like me...lol.
But I do love coach Capuano. He coaches old school hockey....my kind of coach.
I'm remember a time where if you were losing 6-2 at home...man...the gloves would be flying off. some people now call that.."bush league sore loser"......we just used to call it having some heart and showing some pride in front of your fans.
@Wallace1 @McPhee37 @KevinMccarthy
Fortunately for us....Capuano will show mercy....he'll just dress martin....no Carkner or Boulton...hopefully.
Not my version of a 4th line. I like a rough and tumble 4th line.....Give me a true enforcer......and middleweight weight who can skate on the other wing....and a nasty speedy, hard hitting center. But that's me
Like I've been saying...speed is great....can't help you win the board battles tho. Now size on the other hand...;)
Wow....sign me up
Yeah..5th..6th full year in the league.....get rid of him send him to the Pack...lol
How about play them both on the 4th line?
i'm joking..kind of..lol. 4th line players dont get a lot of love on this board. Things dont go right....look out.
I can already predict the board tomorrow.....
"Back to back losses...and blown out by the Leafs? Get Tanner Glass out of the line-up"...........
And that will probably be followed up with....."Damn that Tanner Glass....he caused the Ebola outbreak!"
Tanner.....if you want to do something reckless..nows the time
Pull him.....get Tanner out there....show some heart and pride will ya boys?
Are you freaking kidding me?Keep backing up boys....jeez
Come on...give it to Stempy!!!!
well, you got the skating dead to keep you occupied til it comes on
10 sec tanner..get out there....turn the tide
av...do the right thing...get tanner out there
Was hoping that was a PF line.....nice one
""I'm Rick Grimes Bitch!"
Garcon means boy
Leafs get another one....gonna have to turn the tide.......
@Billfrom Brookhaven @McPhee37 @AnnoyingJoe
@Billfrom Brookhaven @McPhee37
The Leafs....they have no chance now

LOL....I'm on more dope than Boogaard was. Number one rule...dont mix pills and booze....second rule....
wait..what day is it?
That's what i miss about my hockey days...if you pissed me off...i legally could beat the piss out of ya and spend just 5 minute in the box.
Hey..I got the brain damage...please keep your sentences to 4 words or less so i can understand them. ;)
i have to go now and work on my lawsuit against the CHL. I didnt know that getting in 200 fights could possibly cause damage to my health...lol
it's getting to the point where i have to defend almost everything I post....lol. Starting to take away some of the enjoyment of being here and watching the game. So....I'll just keep quiet...enjoy the game. works for everyone.
Yes he does Bleed...yes he does. Rangers seemed to pick it up a little after that hit.....amazing how that works.
@KevinTheNYRBlog @McPhee37 @_Jack @rangermom
I think your analogy doesn't work. Your talking about playing a position....the enforcer/fighter is a role.
Hockey is a sport of beauty and violence. The enforcer is committing an act of violence....I'm physically assaulting another person.....and that person is committing an act of violence against me......its unlike any position in all of sports...(not including boxing obviously).
Never mind the ability to throw a punch......and how to "eat" a punch.....its about the when's and why's of committing these acts of violence.
It's something that needs to be done....and experienced....its almost impossible to explain. Now if Rangermom is a brawler....been in a ton of fights...assaulted people regularly..etc.etc....then she has my apologies. But she's not a fighter....not a brawler...doesn't commit acts of violence against people. She's a normal woman.....a Hockey mom.
@rangermom @KevinTheNYRBlog @McPhee37
I believe knuckledragger was someone else....yours was caveman. :)
no need to apologize kid.....the jokes just get old after a while
Kev.....I'm not going after Rangermom because she's a woman.
When it comes to fighting in hockey....she's never played the sport as an enforcer. fighting as a profession. so i went after her lack of experience in that regard.... and since she's a woman she probably does not have the experience of fighting on a regular basis...whether it be sports...bars...hockey...school...whatever.
My mom, my sister, my wife........love all three of those women to death. But all three are ignorant on the nuances of fighting in the nhl as an enforcer. 1) they've never played a hockey game and played the role of tough guy or enforcer...2)As women....i dont think any of them have ever been in a fight....so they dont even have fighting experience.
Do you see my point?
@KevinTheNYRBlog @_Jack @rangermom
And lastly Kevin........
I've lost my patience with being insulted for my views on this blog since i first signed up. It didn't bother me in the beginning.....but now....yeah...its getting under my skin. i used to show my wife this blog...and how funny some of you guys are. But she asked me to stop some time ago. She asked.." Why are some of these people mean to you?".....I told her that many people here disagree with my my viewpoints....and she responded..."Well, they don't have to be mean."
Good woman my wife...protective of me..lol. And just for the record Kev....ontop of the bad shoulder...knees...neck...i literally did take one too many punches. Affected short term memory....and my balance...so yes...i do have brain damage.
So...keep those jokes coming...they're hysterical.
Arent you all glad I'm back? At least I keep things lively. ;)
