Both running backs had an awful game in pass protection/blitz pickup. Neither of them are normally that bad.

@codrutc I felt like the defensive penalties finally being called changed the way those corners played a little too. but that line sure looked good with Shipley and Holmes out there.
They do still have Nixon, who was inactive today, but I bet there'll be an o line signing this week, maybe a PS guy.

@chip_bennett I felt like (remember this was written during the game) the defense played well at times when a lesser unit could've made Hoyer look like an all pro. He was still awful. Definitely addressed that too.
@buymymonkey I felt like that defense was amazing top to bottom and would've been rough for any quarterback. They could've destroyed 2003 Peyton or 80s Marino. The lack of flags until late helped them out, but I think the Browns defense was just brilliant today.
I agree, a better QB plus a defense playing like that would've been too much for these guys. Well, I guess it would've been about what we saw against New England.
@chip_bennett I don't know. Sounds like he should be resting and healing up for the playoffs. He might be worried about being replaced, like a lot of older NFLers tend to be.
Also, things like that make you wonder how many injuries go unreported in pro football.
Sorry about the formatting issues. They should be fixed now. It should look like a bullet list.
Thank heavens it's an animal name combination and doesn't have anything to do with any type of, umm, squirt.
Also, that thing is adorable. I just want to give it a hug.

@Payton Still no idea about pokemon stuffs, but that Larry Johnson/Herm Edwards analogy is pretty cool.
I've never paid attention to Pokemon (because I'm a grown-a** man), but what on this earth is a Squirtle?
I liked it better too. Going back through the scoring plays is no fun, and it's exactly what we all get when we read the major media stuff. This way was a blast.

Haha. Thanks. I was hoping people who were on Twitter during the game wouldn't get bored with this one because they pretty much saw all of it on their time line earlier.
You've probably already seen it by now, but Pagano said it looks like a concussion.
I have no idea why Kerr wasn't playing. Deactivated in favor of Jones, I suppose? I still wish they would get rid of the healthy inactive players. There's no reason for it in the modern NFL.
Okay, I found it, but my phone won't let me paste the link in here for some reason. I can send it to you on Twitter if you like.

I heard (I think on WIBC) that he was late for a meeting or practice, and that he should start again. I bet it's in writing somewhere out there on the internet. ...but I can't say for sure that I'm right.
Also, Kavell Conner Memorial Doghouse is just brilliant.
gruden is a walking malapropism, but I'll take him over the far less interesting Chris Collinsworth.

@erhall01 @chip_bennett All in favor of #Kerricane?

@AJ_ Yes, Sergio definitely looks like he's pretending to be an airplane.
I think two things this team will have to worry about now are turnovers (both sides of the ball) and penalties. They're an absolute penalty machine, and it could cost them the game against a better opponent.
Also, they'll have to be careful not to get to much "swagger." Stay humble so they don't find themselves being humbled by an opponent.
Yeah, someone alerted me to #Kerricane. That one is fantastic.
I like Zachnado too. @chip_bennett
The Trxans had a lot more pressure on Luck in the 2nd half from what I could see. Those backups and the rookie were having their way early. I'd have to go back through it to see what changed.

@buymymonkey As long as it's a win, I'll take it to the bank. Hoping the Colts are the better prepared team tonight.

@Bobman Fantastic. I can't seem to come up with one that doesn't have anything to do with those beards. It's. just. so. beardy.
@paulcareyjr I'm actually worried this game could be one where everything goes wrong for an exhausted, banged up Colts team, but I like your prediction. I'll see your pull-away-at-the-end prediction and raise you one blowout by the away team. 38-12 Colts, because that's what I want to happen.
I don't suspect we're going to know anytime soon. It could've come from fhe front office, in which case, Pagano would never give a reason because there's no way of saying it without potentially throwing his bosses under the bus.
All we can do is speculate.

@coltsauth_todd @MarcusDugan What?! You don't like "Jacksonvillian," bro? Thank you. Nice job to you too. How'd you like that feature photo?
@Bobman On the Landry thing, remember a lot of the pre workout shakes and supplements and that sort of thing these guys take aren't regulated by the FDA. So it falls on them to make sure they aren't violating anything. Sometimes I think that's why the suspension a PED violation is only 4 games.
But in the big picture, it's both maddening and kind of hilarious that Landry of all people tested positive for PEDs.

I can't believe Moncrief wasn't gone when the Colts picked in the third. Seriously. He isn't undersized, isn't a dropper, doesn't have character issues, runs decent routes, has great concentration and body control, and he sure as hell isn't slow.
The guy has been electric when he's gotten on the field. I'm excited to see how he develops.

Will, I think the pass defense is going to be a problem this year. The top three corners have been amazing so far, but the safeties and linebackers are having trouble (and there's that pass rush issue).
But I agree that they were likely playing softer defense in the second half anyway.
They truly were a couple of good bounces from 1-1. They lost a gMe they should've won when many of us believed it was a horrid matchup. I honestly believe they're going to shellack the jaguars this weekend. It should be fun.

I like the first half Foles and second half Foles bit. I'm betting Eagles fans could say the same about Luck.

@TrueBlue87 @Platinum @MarcusDugan @zgs1288 I want to defend him, but we shouldn't be talking about upside with Richardson. He should be producing now, and he isn't. Until he changes that, people are going to be hard on him. He's essentially Indy's 2013 1st round pick, and 1st round picks make and break the careers of GMs, fair or not. If Richardson produces - and not in the way where we have to look for it - all will be forgotten.
I do agree, though, that he'll be here through the end of his rookie deal. Unfortunately, if he has a cut-worthy season, it appears all of his $3 million in 2015 would be dead money if he were let go. He'd have to be abysmal to be cut. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/trent-richardson/

@AJ_ I think on that Fleener pass-deflection-interception, Luck also threw to his left shoulder (back shoulder?), where the defender was, while Fleener turned to his right. I was too hard on him in the recap.
@zgs1288 Richardson was definitely decisive, which was great to see. He still doesn't look very fast, but if he plays with the kind of purpose he played with tonight, he may not need to have all that much top end speed.
Hahaaa. Maybe we should've gone all 70s Saturday Night Live Point Counterpoint on each other.

I actually wasn't sure which way that was going to go. It's good to see they were smart about playing Manning and picked their blitzes more carefully.
@NickWalter I do remember that episode. A friend who was at the bar when they filmed it DM'd me on twitter asking if I'd seen the live broadcast and telling me Irsay looked like he was sick or something.
I hate that all this has happened the way it has, but it could've been much worse. He's been such a good owner since 97, and I want the guy to get better.

Eh. The point is not to care too much about the result of a preseason game. I could've picked any past preseason loss for comparison (there are plenty from which to choose)
The concern is that this was supposed to be the game that shows us what the Colts really have this year. Let's hope they're sharper on September 7, or it'll be ugly.
They are usually up to a higher standard. I was falling asleep as I proofread this one. Next one will be better. Thanks for reading.
@bradicus18 I don't remember him ever looking good playing deep - or even being back there very often.
I looked at his coverage breakdown though, and it's more in line with what we'd expect of him: only thrown at 33 times all season. Only gave up 2 TDs, but never batted down a pass (I thought he did one to a running back along the sideline, but PFF disagrees). He allowed 25 completions for 237 yards, 9.5 ypc. Apparently, that's slightly above average, so as long as he isn't any worse.
He's not going to make a leap at his age, but he'll need to clean some things up if Pagano wants him playing deep.
3 months, 4 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://coltsauthority.com/2014-articles/colts-notebook-preseason-dress-rehearsal-the-search-for-a-starting-safety.html
@bradicus18 I agree about the interchangeable thing. Not a fan. Surprisingly, last season, Landry was better in coverage than he was against the run, going against everything he seems to pride himself on. Before the playoffs, he had a 3.4 in coverage (-.3 against KC and -2.1 against NE, only his second game in the red in coverage all season dropped him down to 1.1). He finished with a -2.9 in run defense.
None of that is what I would expect, although he missed a bunch of tackles (16 apparently), so I guess I can see the low run defense score.
I don't know what the Jets used him as, but he batted down more passes with them (not looking, but I think 8 sounds right) than any other season. I'm still not sold on him as the FS. The guy looks like a linebacker, which makes me perceive him as a bit slow for being a single high safety in this defense. But I don't know that he'll be a liability. I think he can be average in coverage. We'd like more than that as fans, but I'm hopeful.

@Heracleitus Same here.
@Bobman @MarcusDugan @ColtsHead_Ben Apparently, they stacked the box for most of the first half, according to Pagano. But still, you'd hope they air it out the next time the opponent picks the "engage eight" defense from an old Madden game.

@Bobman (sitting at my computer laughing aloud)
That is fantastic.
@ColtsHead_Ben I don't know if those heavy formation runs into a 9 man box (seriously, if there's more than 7, they're begging you to pass) are a reflection of coaching, quarterback adjustments, or just preseason. My hope is preseason.
@flugel Lance Louis is faster than he looks, man. He's a sideline to sideline...blocker.... I just got home and fixed it. Should say Hugh Thornton up there now too.
And yes, the Giants look awful.
I agree about Purifoy. He sure made a strong case for himself.
