I still think Boyle is a center, and not a winger.....as good as he played last season on the LW.....so it ultimately came down to Boyle vs D Moore......Boyle wanted a bigger role and $3M and Moore was happy to not move on to his 10th team.....and 1.5M........Wished we could have kept both, but Boyle obviously felt he can contribute more than he had offensively...I don't see it.

Just remember back when we signed Stralman, Pouliot, Zucc, etc......certainly was not at the time considered great moves to get us to the Finals.....of course, those moves were made along with Taylor Pyatt, Justin Falk, etc....so not all of them were great. Hard to tell sometimes until later what moves will help us........
I do like the idea of adding Tanner Glass. He can skate, he can protect his teammates and he can penalty kill. We could do worse than a 4th line of Glass, Moore and Carcillo.......

Regular buyout--not compliance buyout
To me dealing Dorsett tells me we are going to go bigger on our 4th line....I hope
I like Mike Richards..I think he will be bought out by the Kings...can't pay Mike the money he is making to center their 4th line and he has something ridiculous like a 12 year contract from the Flyers....which makes his reasoning for buyout the same as Brad Richards. We saw firsthand what he can do, and I think he would be the replacement leader in the dressing room as well.

Wonder what Tortorella thinks about Richards being on the 4th line at this time. Is there a bit of I told you so? I think Richards is really laboring, but not sure if anyone else felt like the moves to shift the lines last night were not all that effective. Stepan, Kreider and St Louis should be together.....and Richards, Hagelin and Nash should be together.....our 4th line is way too impactful to bring it down a notch with "Skateinplace" Richards......and the Zucc/Brass/Pouliot line should never be touched.

Since it is a slow day in Rangerland.....have to think about this piece for 2015 and beyond. When we win the Cup.....we still have to make the hard decisions including about Brad Richards.....cannot have a 6 million + guy playing 3rd line minutes.....who is on the wrong side of 30 and has a billion years left on his deal.
My thought is I like the guy who we are playing against as his replacement. Same name too. I expect MIKE Richards to be bought out for similar reasons by LA. A modest deal for $3-4 million....I think he would be a great add ahead of Brassard and behind Stepan.....I don't think Stasny is the answer...would give us 3 centers very much alike in size and style. I think MIKE Richards plays a hard game, kills penalties, can play PP, he's a good passer....

Could not agree more....if you keep your stick on the ice, many of these calls don't happen.....Kreider's play at the beginning of the last game was without a doubt, careless......not sure that is a play he needs to make in that situation.....many of the crappy penalties the Rangers have taken have been in the offensive zone too...that cannot happen. Dorsett is going to need to be in control of his emotions tonight too. He never gets the benefit of the doubt because he is Dorsett...and all of the refs know his shtick. He cannot let a non-call like the slew foot or a cross check late get him to react....that is what they want
@readjunk One of the best movies of all time----thank you for that----stressed this morning and that just brought a smile to my face. The one thing I would say with all of this anxiety going around is this team all season has proved us wrong. Every time we think they are dead (Cali trip, Nash concussion, End of Regular season, Philly Game 6, Pitt Games 2,3,4,) they always have risen to the occasion.
My prediction is tonight Benoit Pouliot and Zucc will carry us...they have done next to nothing this entire series and they will redeem themselves tonight!
One of the best effing lines of the season, Kevin....
…luckily, the Bruins/Canadiens series is still going because with the way the Rangers have been screwed by the schedule makers this postseason, Game 1 of the Conference Finals would have probably been tomorrow afternoon.

Perfect start to this game.....within the first 2 minutes, St. Louis feeds Nash.....who shanks the puck on the shot but due to the terrible psyche of Fleury the puck goes in for a 1-0 Rangers lead. Finally allows Nash to relax, St. Louis continues to be the lightning rod of emotion.....and the Rangers win Game 7 (3-1).....
@SmellyKisio I will give you another example. Lucic! Is there a team in the NHL who would not want him...? He is borderline dirty.....definitely cocky as hell, but welcomes all challengers....and the scary part is aside from maybe McGrattan, he is one of the best heavyweights out there as a fighter as well--there is no one to police him. Pretty scary combo with his hockey skills and everything. And the point is you never hear anyone complain about his antics at all.....
Just to clarify----all hate responses should go to Lance BRENNAN!! LOL
He is giving the few Lance's around here a bad name...
I have to ask---despite our best players playing like crap, why are we still rolling 4 lines in the last 10 minutes of the game when we need to score goals? I admire Boyle, Carcillo and Moore's energy, but at that point in the game I want to see Zucc, Pouliot and Brassard on every other shift....I want to see Kreider and Hagelin who were both on last night---on the ice.....
There is a point of every game where AV has to shorten the bench and give his team the best chance to play offensively.......I just don't get it.

Like the new format for sure! Great job. Agree--less crashes, less pop-ups, and I can write in the comments area without it taking 20 minutes to get through the glitches in typing a response. Would be awesome if you had a fight counter in the top right corner....that never changes from zero after every game...reminding us all how our roster has been changed to what it is now. I worry about a perimeter, speed team in the playoffs if we get there...didn't work for Habs, Red Wings, Sharks, and Canucks over the past 10 years......Blackhawks have skill, but they have the grit element too....or did with guys like Bolland, Bickell, Saad, Shaw.....we have to find a happy medium between fast/skating, perimeter team...and the Black/Blue of 2011

Is Carcillo under orders NOT to fight since that Philly game? He went in between 1st and 2nd periods in that game and came out without the faceshield on. He knew he was fighting someone....there have been more late hits, questionable hits on our core players lately, and still no retribution of any kind. Sad when Kreider is the guy who has to stick his nose in there to stand up for teammates. Say what you will about Carcillo vs Dorsett....All I know is Sestito challenged the Rangers bench and Dorsett answered the bell. He loses his fair share of scraps, but his willingness to defend his teammates can't be denied.

Agree 6 years is alot, but that is the going rate for UFA's. Question is if we don't spend the money on Girardi, Callahan and Richards....who are we spending it on? Vanek is not coming to the Rangers....Cammaleri is not a fit in my opinion.....there aren't a ton of attractive FA's out there. The other part is losing Prust, Rupp, Duby already has shown damage to the Rangers....what would losing the true BlackNBlue Ranger in Callahan do to the mild physical team we already have? He is better than Clowe and Clarkson and both got 5 million plus for crazy years. IT IS THE GOING RATE!
5 months, 3 weeks ago on Rangers Make Two Offers to Girardi; Interested in McGinn
From all reports, this year's draft is one of the worst in 10 years. I am expecting prospects, not picks for either or both. Kids who are not far from being NHL ready. Many on this site have mentioned some of the kids in Anaheim. Sounds like an ideal match.

With Girardi being 30 and Callahan 29, they don't want to be in their mid 30's trying to find another deal. I get it..but the Rangers cannot put themselves in another Richards buyout situation where you are paying for what they have done and not what they will do. I don't think either are perfect fits for AV's system either, so as hard as this is, I think both might be gone by the deadline. 5 years should be MAX. $5 Mil for Girardi......4.5 for Callahan. I realize neither are realistic

I honestly believe either Rick Nash is playing hurt or playing not to get hurt. Perimeter game only, not going into the trenches or corners or anywhere accept to the blue line and then out of the zone. He is not skating hard on the backcheck, isn't finishing checks---and he never really did those things throughout his career--but he was a beast in the offensive zone, and unfortunately we are not seeing that for long stretches. He was a beast in 3 games this season. At the Kings, at the Stars and at the Bruins. He has been invisible at home.

Any chance we can trade Sather for Brian Burke? This is his quote after firing Jay Feaster.
Burke didn't mention any possible candidates at the press conference but one name that is already popping up is former Flames star and ex-Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk. Either way Burke let everybody know what he wants out of his team, something we saw him do in Toronto.
"We're not hostile enough for me," Burke said. I don't like flag football, I like teams that bang. I don't like the way we play. We want black and blue hockey, that's what we do in Alberta. That's the first thing." Then he threw out the word truculence like old times. It was classic Burke.

@DaveFL I thought that as well. Well we know the Sabres read the blog when they were offended with the practice jersey comment.
@JoshKaye @AnnoyingJoe You would think in all of the time Boyle and Prust hung out together, Prust could have worked with Boyle a bit on how to use that size well in a fight. Could we imagine what Prust would do with that frame? He probably would be shocked if someone told him he was barely six feet. one.
@BrianMineola 100% agree....it's why we drafted this kid in early round 1 when others projected him to be a later first
We have also seen this before. Here in Tampa.....the Bucs went from a player's coach (Dungy) to a taskmaster (Gruden) back to a player's coach (Raheem Morris) back to a taskmaster (Schiano)We went Renney to Torts to AV......but much like the Bucs---put the wrong players in for the wrong style. No question Torts got the most out of a group that was not all that talented, but got them to play really hard---and it covered up the holes...But then his act got old as it traditionally does, but putting AV in now with a group that is overmatched talent wise and does not battle for him like they did for Torts makes it even more challenging....I think this team was flawed from day one. We had Richards, Stepan, Brassard and Boyle to start with in the middle...so who do we sign....D Moore....basically a smaller version of Boyle who was out of hockey for a year.We knew we lost Clowe, a heart and soul type player, knew those guys were going for crazy dollars (Clarkson and Clowe each went for $5 mil), so we said---Pouliot should be the perfect fit instead. And then we knew our black eye since we had Beukeboom was a lack of a physical defencemen...and we said....Falk is the guy that fixes that??? D Moore only would have made sense if we bought out Richards to fill other holes or dealt Boyle to free up money for someone else....we didn't do either....
7 months, 2 weeks ago on AV Already Trying to Save Face
Finally AV admitted what has been discussed at length on here all season. Square pegs for round holes. He wants to play a system that doesn't have the pieces to make it work. We don't have the high end skill players that Detroit has to make the lack of toughness a non-issue. We can't make people pay for taking liberties....the scary part is as fans we knew this in week one. It took AV 30 games to see that....that is on him and Sather. Did he really think Pouliot, D Moore, Falk were the additions we needed to become the New York Red Wings? He was part of those team build meetings too.

@Brukie_ @LanceGold1 I think Asham has underrated skills as a player...better than he gets credit for. Is he a breaking speed records, no, but i don't think he falls behind the play. Certainly skates more fluidly than Taylor "Skate Guards Are Still On" Pyatt.
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Staal Has Concussion; Dorsett, Asham In; Pyatt, Pouliot Out; Lundqvist Starts
Pouliot has been scratched 2 of the last 3 games.I think waivers is a distinct possibility. Really up to Asham to show mgmt that he is up to the task of setting the tone we need, and that he can and will protect his teammates, agree with what others have written...he took the demotion like a pro, but for someone w/pride not used to bus rides and McDonald's for dinner....having the perks of being a pro again for potentially the last time should keep his desire level where we want it. I think Dorsett will flourish as well w/someone else there to back him up....he always did well with Boll on his flank.
@Kevin DeLury Kantor seems like Haley part 2---not as great with the gloves off, but might have a higher ceiling on skills
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Could Bickel Be Recalled Today?
I thought your articles and commentary were spot on this morning, Kevin, but I disagree. I think Bickel is the perfect addition right now, but not on the blue line. I think he is a perfect 4th line winger......for this reason. Let him police and hold people accountable, but instead of rolling Pouliot or Pyatt on line 4, and roll 4 lines, double shift Kreider or Nash.......when Bickel is either in the penalty box or not playing due to game circumstance. Serves 2 purposes....gets best players on the ice more....and gives us a legit deterrent to the crap that keeps happening game in and game out. Sad when the Caps are the more physical team than us. That can never be the case.....Bickel and Asham should be in the lineup until Dorsett is back.....and remove Pyatt, Pouliot
@Paulie_NYR94 I think Dubinsky was a bit of a whipping boy---but more for the fact he was a 4 million dollar player, and we all expected him to score more....which really is not his game. He is a 20 goal a year max guy. In today's NHL though, hard to have 4 million dollar heart and soul guys.....
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Capitals 4, Rangers 1
.I think we need to bring back the "Black and Blue" Rangers.....I think the reality is AV has to adapt. Example....Rob Ryan comes to the Saints and wants to employ 3-4 defense but based on who is in the locker room and injuries knows they have to play 4-3 D and make it work. It has. AV might want to play up-tempo and a skilled game but it does not fit the profile of players we have. Bring up Kantor, Asham and Bickel...release Pouliot, Pyatt. I think all teams know the Rangers are soft. That hit on Kreider should never have happened. I think Torts deserves some blame for not opening things up when we had Gaborik and Nash....but AV does not have those cards to choose from. He has to see that and maybe in the offseason we can bring in guys who more comfortable fit in his system.
Matt Martin would be a perfect fit. He is the type of 4th line winger who can bang--has led the league in hits or has been near the top in hits every year....and can handle middleweights and some heavies....also like some of their young heavies in the minors....gallant comes to mind

Money level is in line with where I thought he would be, but wished the final 3 years of the deal were mutual options......especially if the old CBA laws are as harsh on retiring/injury issues over the age of 35......I believe he would count against the cap even if he retires or gets injured in those final years of that contract. 5 years, 40 million and then even 9 million a year options for the final 3 would have been good

I think Alain is trying to find his landing spot as well. I think he is in adjustment mode too. He is figuring out what works with this group and what doesn't and that does take time. I always thought good leaders adapt, and can cater their style per person they are leading. Not everyone can be led the same way. With that said, I think it would be wise for AV not to do things publicly.....as I know that would not motivate in any way, shape or form.
7 months, 3 weeks ago on Vigneault Getting Frustrated?
@DaveFL Could not agree more---reality is the cap is the reason we did not keep Prust and more than likely the reason Dubinsky had to go in the Nash deal. We have not replaced either of them in my opinion. Soul players, team camaraderie guys--Dorsett tries to be that, but he is simply outmuscled in most circumstances. Not fair to Dorsett...in Columbus he had Boll and Prout as backup.
If we took out Pouliot, D Moore and replaced them with more heart and soul guys......would be a big boost for us. Zack Smith would fit that spot well.....from Ottawa. Steve Ott is not the right guy for what we need....too small. Dalton Prout with the Blue Jackets or Boll would be a good fit too.

@Purinton Falk cannot fight--has never been known as a fighter either coming up. How many guys can the Rangers have over 6' 4" who cannot fight? Nash, Staal, Falk, Boyle.......and the one guy with all of the heart and moxy is Dorsett at five foot nothing....
Peluso is EXACTLY the type of guy we need to have....I get the no heavyweight concept in today's NHL, but you have to have a guy who can keep a Lucic, Sestito, Orr, Carkner type in check.....and that should not fall on Dorsett's shoulders.
There are other Peluso's out there...but he happens to be one of the good ones. He just broke his hand last season in a fight and missed almost the entire season afterwards.
@DubiLeetch @LanceGold1 I understand your take.....we need to score...but I know what I saw when Prust, Dubinsky, Rupp, and others were on the ice for the Rangers......a better rounded team. I also know I saw the Rangers become a more effective team once Clowe arrived last season....changed the entire dynamic of the team. I just think the creative skill guys play different knowing they are going to have space and time. I just think we have gotten too far away from that with the current stock of Pyatt, Pouliot, D Moore, etc....those guys don't add anything from the physical side or the scoring side.....we are set up like the Detroit Red Wings without the offensive skill guys to pull it off.
7 months, 4 weeks ago on Lightning 5, Rangers 0
I know this is sacrilege on this site, but I don't think Mashinter is the toughness factor we need. He plays a very passive game although he is pretty talented once the gloves are dropped. We need someone who plays with an edge (basically a bigger Dorsett).....and I am not sure we have that in the Hartford either from a forward perspective....Haley is the same as Dorsett. Bickel can't play forward, Asham is not happening.....that guy in Hartford right now plays D in Mcilrath. Double game misconduct in the last game......if we can deal Del Zotto for a Zack Smith or Neil and replace Del Zotto with McIlrath, we get bigger and tougher to play against.
I know this would be a reach...but Steve Macintyre is on waivers-----legit heavyweight for sure. If we are going to have someone scratched per game, would rather it be a 30+ heavyweight than JT Miller. Waive Pyatt or Pouliot......bring in Macintyre....suit him up against the teams who tend to run us like the Bruins, Leafs, etc....and then put in someone else against the Red Wings type teams. Miller should be in the minors getting 20 plus minutes a game.

@brian2686 I love it!! Completely agree--if we put him on the first line, he can get in the offensive zone to take penalties with more regularity. Why do it with 3rd line minutes----?? @shoot_the_goalie @LanceGold1 All of that would fly with me but he continues to take offensive zone penalties---of the hooking, holding, tripping variety....so he is basically the Armando Benitez of relief pitchers right now..he has to do those kinds of things because everyone beats him down the ice the other way.

@shoot_the_goalie @LanceGold1 I think you are 100% right but we might not hear him say anything----and risk losing a big pay day he has coming up in free agency in 2015 I think. His play though absolutely says you are right though.
I have an answer, although I don't think you will like it. I think AV needs Pyatt as a buy-in, someone who he had play for him previously to reinforce the message he is trying to convey. He needs an AV believer in the room. If he benches Pyatt, he risks losing someone who has his back....as he tries to build this thing, he needs that connection in the locker room to be a bridge to the other players. Almost more important than what he does on the ice....SUCKS.....as I think Pyatt might be the worst skater in the NHL (Mr. Skate Guard) but I think that might be it.
My bigger concern right now is with Staal....he has not looked good at all this season. I realize he missed a ton of time last season---but still.
Also, I don't like the Moore/Del Zotto tandem---both guys are more offensive minded, rush players, and it seems they don't feed well off each other at all. They both need to play with more defensive minded partners IMO.
Something like this might work better but I am sure others have combos that could work. I don't believe the Girardi/McDonaugh combo has been stellar so I would not be opposed to separating them.
Staal Del Zotto
What was interesting last night and moving forward is how teams with tough guys are going to play us. Are they going to go the route of the Red Wings and put the tough guys in the press box, or use their toughness to try and push the Rangers around? Since we left Mashinter out, the Islanders left Boulton out. Against the Flyers, they didn't dress Rosehill against us. Maybe AV realizes that isn't the type of team we have...why try and go that route (AS PAINFUL AS THAT IS) and lose playing a style others play better.
Personally, when we had Bickel, Rupp, Prust, and for a short time Scott.....I thought it was the best version of the Rangers we have had in a long time. We played a mean game, and teams did not want to play against us. But the NHL is changing....Lucic is a rarity...a guy who can run over you, through you or go around you, and what are you going to do about it?? Very few players like him in the NHL and if you have one, do anything you can to hold onto them.
8 months, 3 weeks ago on What the Hell Got Into Brad Richards?
@ATCRyan @LanceGold1 Going to be a long season if accountability does not go across all players regardless of AV's track record with them. Anyone who watched last nights' game and wanted to designate someone to sit, would agree Pyatt is the guy.
8 months, 3 weeks ago on Canadiens 2, Rangers 0
Hoping Mashinter plays and Pyatt sits, to go with Boyle and Dorsett on a supposed crash line. The reality is Taylor Pyatt is way too slow to play that style of game.....he skates like his skate guards weren't removed before the game.
@Jercooks845 I was in the process of writing that!! Totally agree...he is exactly the type of player we need---big, physical and has a shot from the point!! Don't think del zotto is enough, but maybe some others included....
9 months ago on Rangers Exploring A Trade?
@FREE MASHINTER @LanceGold1 I understand, but Rupp skated like he had 50 lb ankle weights on his skates. I hope that is not the comparison:) LOL More than anything, I hope he is there no matter the circumstance to not let the Rangers get pushed around and run. If he does that, I will be satisfied.
9 months ago on What Mashinter Brings to the Table
I personally don't see Mashinter as the Avery type of player. If they wanted an agitator and someone who can put the focus on himself they would have brought up Michael Haley. Mashinter gives the Rangers a bit of size on their 4th line and someone who hopefully can answer the bell if someone runs a Ranger...but he is not the thorn in the side of the opponent type of player.
Would like to see these lines of (Pyatt only because we have to)....ideally, our 4th line should be a crash line, and Pyatt and Fast would not be there...but I went with what we have to work with. I think all of these lines combine skill and grit...something I don't see with the lines we currently have put together..(Grit with Pyatt is a reach, I get it)
9 months, 1 week ago on Vigneault Beginning to Put His Stamp on Rangers
@KevinDeLury @LanceGold1 Who cares if they started a skill line. That would have given the Bruins a chance to have a skill player run by those guys....and change the whole mindset of the Bruins...get them off their game maybe. Similar to what we did when Dorsett started chasing Marchand in Game 3.
1 year, 2 months ago on Rangers 4, Bruins 3, OT
Doesn't the fact they started flat fall on Tortorella for not starting the 4th line to start the game? Wasn't the sole purpose of putting Haley, Newbury and Dorsett together to change the "jam" level and spark his team? I consider it a fail for him not starting the game with them to set the tempo and pace...and get the crowd into it.
Could not agree more with the decisions--and love the Newbury, Dorsett, Haley idea for starting the game. We have to show we are not going to back down and let people get run. Do I expect any of those 3 to win a fight with Lucic or Thornton? No....but I do expect that their willingness to do even stand in there toe to toe will ignite their teammates from the slumber they have been in. Haley and Dorsett are going to get Bruins off their game, there is no question...The way they play it will be impossible for them not to
1 year, 2 months ago on Richards, Asham Out; Haley, Newbury, Hamrlik In
As we all are freaking out about where the Rangers are and how badly Rick Nash has played. Think about the Blackhawks and their fans. Jonathan Toews, Captain Clutch.....has less goals than Rick Nash does in this playoffs. ZERO. They didn't lose in 20 plus straight games this season and they are down 2-1, with a realistic chance of going down 3-1. I get it, our passion and frustration both run high---but after the midpoint of this season if you would have told me we would be in Round 2 of the playoffs, I would have called you crazy. I will enjoy this ride and expect a stellar effort win or lose tonight from the boys. My thought---start the game with Dorsett, Asham and Boyle---and tell them to take no prisoners....SET THE TONE!
1 year, 2 months ago on Why Not Us?
@ThrSage @RelentlessJ Glad you said what I had been thinking when I saw Powe go down. Not being mean here, but I smiled for at least one second. Not sure what Torts loves about his game--but our PK didn't go to #1 with him in the lineup....his negatives far outweigh his positives. Would like to see a Crash line created with Dorsett, Newbury and Asham if Clowe is not back.....and put Boyle on the wing but take the faceoffs on a line with Brassard. They work well together. If Clowe is back....Boyle, Clowe and Asham would be a nice line to change energy....
1 year, 2 months ago on Clowe Goes Through Contract Drills; Nash, Powe Not on Ice
@KevinDeLury @BetweentheworldsWell said, I could not agree more. On an almost every morning basis, this is the first thing I read....and I appreciate all the efforts put into this. When you mentioned you might take the site down, I was bummed and did not find a replacement that was even close. My only dig is I hope you guys survive the trade deadline this season. I know you guys were down almost all day last year!! LOL
1 year, 3 months ago on Gorton to Lead Rangers During Trade Deadline?
I don't necessarily agree with that. I think he doesn't like Kreider BECAUSE of his play, not anything personal. I just think he doesn't think Kreider plays like a guy who is 6-3 and can fly...similar to his comments about Gaborik vs Hagelin....knows he has the tools just doesn't think he takes advantage of them. I do think Tortorella can coach this team to the Stanley Cup, I just think he has to have all of the right pieces to pull it off. I don't think he believes Kreider is one of those pieces. I hope he changes his mind.
1 year, 4 months ago on Source Confirms Rangers Interest in Boyle
I wrote that yesterday here, and everyone jumped on me for it. I said there is no way Tortorella was ready to get him back in the lineup yet, and the only reason he is here is because the trade deadline was upon us in 2 weeks. Love Kreider, and I don't endorse this move at all, but Tortorella is NOT a fan of Kreider. That much is obvious. If you listen to his presser about Kreider's play over the weekend, that did not sound like a coach expecting him to be back so quickly.
I just think Pyatt and Powe are 4th liners--not really hating on them--I just think they are much the same...I would prefer to see our 4th line consist of Asham and Haley along with Halpern to be fair.....as I personally think when we play teams like Boston and Toronto--we are going to get manhandled physically with no one there to protect our skilled players.
1 year, 4 months ago on Kreider Recalled; Haley Assigned; Biron Likely Tomorrow; Asham Sunday
Anyone else feel like this move might be to showcase Kreider before deadline? I hope not--I think the Rangers are building the right way.....I just don't think Tortorella is a big fan of Kreider. Pretty sad to be honest. He has to give us more than Pyatt or Powe does.
I should clarify--I am not saying this is what I want.....I am saying this is what the talk has been. Trading Gaborik for DEPTH. Don't shoot the messenger. I never said I agreed with it. That doesn't mean it won't happen. I am more excited about the idea of a Gaborik for Bfuglien from Winnipeg type deal....and move him back to forward....he fits the Rangers in a lot of ways, and Schonny and Torts will get him in shape.
1 year, 4 months ago on Rangers Talking to Kings About Gaborik?
slapshot13j I think on D, unless we get Kris Letang type to run our PP, I would take Staal, Girardi, McDonough and DZ over any group of 4 D. We need a better chemistry fit in the top 6 and a 3rd line center who can score. Edmonton doesn't need Gaborik from us, they need Mark Staal....
That was hilarious----but that is the reality right now---all reports are Gaborik is being shopped for DEPTH we lost when we traded for Nash.
Realistically, I think we are looking at Stoll/Penner/Toffoli/Jordan Nolan like players. No chance Richards will be dealt to us, nor Kopitar, and Scuderi is not coming either. Justin Williams and one of those 3 could be the package....
I think Gaborik has become a luxury we do not need now--with 2 RW's ahead of him on the depth chart. We keep trying to fit a square peg into a circle having him play out of position.
We need a legitimate 3rd line center so Boyle OR Halpern play but on line #4...and we need a left wing with some size.....Stoll and Jordan Nolan would be a good fit for a win now team like we are.
Asham's 1 goal to Haley's no goals. LOL. Hopefully we don't have to depend on either for offense. I just think Haley has a better feel for how and when to shift momentum and get under other team's skin. Asham has played with every team in this division and I find it hard to believe he has the desire to drop gloves with his former teammates and players he has grown close with. I don't care who you are, that is a tough thing to do.
1 year, 4 months ago on Gabby-Richards-Nash Reunited; Asham Skates Again
Although I agree about reuniting the line you mentioned....right now, the most important thing is getting Gaborik out of his funk and playing with a bit more confidence. I think this also gives Tortorella a chance to show Gaborik he has his back and elevates him to the top line. I also think Haley is a better skater and overall player than Asham and I hope they might have a chance of playing together a bit.....
They fought 3 times during that season---and 2 of the times they jumped each other....twice Haley cut him open. Always an interesting dynamic when players with those reps change teams. Like you said, hopefully it is just something that they move past. I have been calling for Haley all season---constant ignition and he absolutely will stand up for his teammates-something Mashinter and others simply have not done.
1 year, 4 months ago on Haley Recalled; Richards Questionable
Haley will give this team a lift, there is no question--curious if Bickel and him have a quick bury the hatchet conversation. Haley destroyed Bickel in a fight a few years back, left him with a really bad black eye. I remember Bickel saying he thought Haley jumped him early. He did not. I agree, he can be our Avery reincarnate, but if he pushes it too far, Tortorella is not the kind of coach who is going to allow that to fester. He is going to have to earn that trust.
Agreed, I think it is tough---but I don't think you need to know the system well to finish checks and stand up for your teammates--or better yet, know when your team needs as spark and drop the mitts to change momentum. THAT is what Prust excelled at, having the pulse of the team and know exactly when to do what he did best.
1 year, 4 months ago on Lundqvist Has to Have that One
Was extremely disappointed with Mashinter since his call up. Where was the nasty streak? Where was the physical presence he was going to bring? Played very timid. Very safe. I really think this team could use the spunk Michael Haley would bring. He might not win all of his fights, but he agitates and could play the Zac Rinaldo role for the Rangers very well. Not quite Avery pest, but probably a better fighter than Avery was.
I can agree with your take about the fresh legs piece---but I still think the young players on this team play afraid to make a mistake....and that is not the way you want them to learn how to play.
1 year, 4 months ago on Does Torts Need A Deep Playoff Run to Survive?
The only thing I would fault Tortorella with is his handling of young players. I believe Krieder was playing well last season in the playoffs because he didn't know the system all that well and Tortorella let him use his natural skills. Once we have groomed Krieder to play in the "system" he looks like he is hesitant and scared to make a mistake. At some point he has to see he has to let kids play and make mistakes and be hockey players who play with guts and feel...I think JT Miller has suffered from the same---played really well in first few games and now is overthinking.
Sometimes lines are greater than the sum of its parts. Think Boyle/Fedotenko/Prust was similar to a ways ago of Ortmeyer/Hollweg/Moore.....sometimes when the line goes away so does the players from it. Ortmeyer and Hollweg were out of the NHL after their time together. Not saying Boyle can't turn it around but he is the odd-man out chemistry wise in my opinion right now.
1 year, 5 months ago on Kreider Not Letting Mixed Signals Get Him Down
I personally thought that Kreider played fairly well last night. He drew 2 penalties-----and battled. Too often this season, that was NOT the case, and he played too much on the outside. Last night was the first time he was physically involved and rushing the net to be taken down in the crease. BOYLE though was absolutely awful last night. Anyone else notice we have played much worse since he was put back in the lineup?
I thought the rule was only about his entry level contract kicking in, not about whether he can be recalled (or not recalled). Once he plays the 6 games, his first year of the contract is burned...and that is what they need to decide on--whether they feel it is worth having him play in the NHL this year and use up 1 of the 3 years.

And our only center who can distribute the puck was on the point!
1 year, 5 months ago on Gaborik to Left Wing Experiment Over...For Now
I know this was a discussion last week, and many responded that changing right to left wing was no biggy. Anybody who watched Gaborik play during the first 2 weeks could see he was uncomfortable, and out of place...and I am glad they saw that. This team is very right wing heavy....Nash, Gaborik and Callahan.....maybe having 3 right wings playing the powerplay at the same time was part of the reason we were so awful early on.
Agree with you both, ChrisD and Kevin, I just mentioned it seems like Tortorella is on Gaborik more than on Nash for his shoddy play. Both are having to make adjustments, but only one of them seems to be getting crap about not playing all that well. We can add Richards into the discussion as well as he has played just as poorly. None of the forwards have been outstanding until the last 2 games to be honest.
1 year, 5 months ago on Tortorella Considered Benching Gaborik Last Night
Wanted to mention that Gaborik has been asked to play out of position up until last night. He had been moved to left wing since day one to accommodate Nash on the top line. Even when he was not on the top line, and he played 2nd line duty, he was moved to accommodate Callahan on the RW. Not as easy as it sounds and might explain the struggles a bit for Gaborik. He has been in the league for a long time as a top 5-10 player at RW and all of the sudden, he is being asked to play out of his comfort zone. Think Tortorella needs to see that it will take time to adjust.
What about Michael Haley? Seems like Sean Avery reincarnated.
