Damn, how much does a "997 Carerra Cup electric power steering pump" cost? Cool little racecar nonetheless. Loving the variety around here lately, keep up the good work!

Just looks odd to me. The E46 front end looks too fat and plump with the Silvia rear which looks thinner and more lithe to me. Something like an old BMW 850 front end might look better to me than this. Looks like nice body work and execution though.

Still haven't been fortunate enough drive this or a newer Boxster/Cayman S, but everything I have read tells me these have to be about the best all around sports cars left for even remotely realistic money. Every article I read laments the passing of so many other cars of the type that we may have taken for granted and are now long gone. It's a shame so many of us will be basically forced into buying older used cars in the coming just to find a car that gives us the right grins the old fashioned way.

Great pics and storytelling as usual.

One of my all time favorites. College Roomy had a 944T and the neighbor across the street growing up had a 968 as a wicked Auto-X weapon after years of rotary madness. P-car + enormous 4-cyl is a special combo. The CS models with the crazy color matching is just pure gravy. Great car and story to share, thanks!

Aren't you guys "in" with KW now? They should have some quality stuff for a rig like that. I like the red, they are supposed to be track/fun wheels right? Might as well have some fun with the color. Those are some meaty tires, I can't imagine the grip and turn in on that thing now...

@Option86 I am not a fan... But they seem to "Work" here. The VS center cap bothers me and seems cheesy, and they just seem too blingy on a lot of cars with balls. I wanna throw them on an old Lexus and troll the main drag... I know they are a big older skool/street drift thing and I will never be annoyed by a huge lip, but there are a loft of other Work wheels (if thats the brand they have to be) I would roll on this thing. Super cool drift car nonetheless.

@Jochem The "budget bags" are definately working. It looks great and "right" sitting there. I guess I just wish it had one of the newfangled pimp air set-ups, or god forbid a nice set of coilovers, to keep up with rest of the build. Hopefully "phase two" is any moderate motor swap and a better (sounding/described at least) suspension set-up whatever it may be. 150-200+ hp and some solid "ground control" would seal the deal for me. The rest of the car is so well executed, and the cash has been flowing. Might as well make it a hoot to actually drive as well. Not trying to "bag" (pun intended") on this guy at all, its a great car, but right now it cant be that fun to drive. The car has come this far, finish it off and make it a legend.

@Brad_S I have never heard of three piece forged construction (basically the first 3pc wheels ever commercially available) being described as cheap. People mistake the mesh design as common. It was the first and it works. That's why it and the basic 5 spoke are the most copied designs ever. A set of 16" RS' cost $2600 with tires in 1986. That would be $5516.25 in 2013 dollars! For 16's. They are an original. There is nothing cheap about their design, construction, or overall quality. It's not their fault everybody knew it and copied the best. Know your history so you don't look like a fool in the future. http://www.bbs-racing-wheels.com/seiten/htm.txt/rse.htm

1 year, 4 months ago on Unfinished Business: A Volkswagen Jetta Coupe

Reply

@Brad_S Yeah the RS' are common? They were insanely expensive when new. They are old rare wheels now that still command a hefty price. You do understand that BBS made several other wheels that look similar right, (RM's and a ton of OE wheels), that have long since been hacked up ? I hope all you clowns are complaining about TE37's and all their knockoffs in ten years the same way. These types of wheels are reference/groundbreaking designs, there is a reason why they right on everything.

Love it but the lack of an interesting motor, budget bags, and the overpoked (for me anyway) wheels are kind of a let down. Painted small bumpers have never offended me as they have so many others, works great on this car. Interior is insane, those UK guys are the masters of the exploding cow. Make it fun to drive and throw some decent tires on that fit and its close to perfection for me.

The Z4 is a mess. I could possibly appreciate it if it started life as a POS, and the drop and wheels were mangling the body, but this was likely a nicely put together and fairly expensive car not that long ago. Now I just see a car that needs bodywork, and wheels that at least fit enough to not destroy itself. I'm trying to get it but sometimes I just can't.

The Odyssey is bananas. That motor would be sick in pretty much any little FWD car, Honda or otherwise. I like the RX-7 in all its coppery goodness, nice to see they didn't just blast it black or red or whatever. IMO thats the best convential motor swap you could do in that car. Would be a blast to drive, and could be easy and reliable day to day.

Great coverage, variety, and perfect pics as always. Love the EG but the wood wheel jars. Beautiful steering wheel but it just seems completely at odds with most of the build. Those things (relatively) suck to hold onto and it just seems like ramming something in there that doesn't belong for the sake of being different. Great car but the wheel and the mint but otherwise meh factory seats seem at odds with the rest of it.

Suspension, wheels/tires, exhaust. Fill in the cracks with some inexpensive OEM + or rare miscelleaneus doo dads to keep the day to day fun factor and interest level up. Then the real $$ decisions need to made if the car is worth serious money for added power or transmission upgrades. On FWD cars IMO a LSD is arguably the best thing I have done, also one of the most expensive single parts. Some cars just don't have the potential to justify that level of involvement. At some point polishing the turd of a motor you might have vs a swap becomes an issue as well. For me the big thing is finding a way to get more enjoyment out of the car day to day, some cars that means not fooling with them much, others need a ton of work/care, still more need to be sold for a different car entirely before you get too far down the road.

I like that the rear fender scoops are blended into the body again. That annoyed me given the price that they were plastic inserts in the last few generations. Overall looks clean and semi-understated as the turbo has become of late.
