I live in the Bay Area now and I watch the A's a lot, both on TV and in the flesh. A lot of people, me included, are pretty disappointed that Billy Beane didn't resign Gomes. He did an excellent job in Oakland this year, both on the field and in the clubhouse. He's pretty average as a DH but he was effective playing in left field. If he's not staying in Oakland I'm happy that he's going to the Sox. I feel much the same about him as Cody Ross after he left the Giants for Boston.
@English Sox Fan Me too, that's why I moved here :-D
@English Sox Fan Have a great time fella. I was in the area for the Cleveland games a couple of weekends ago but to my intense annoyance I didn't get to go, so I spent a day and a half fuming on Martha's Vineyard visiting my wife's sister instead of enjoying Fenway Park.
@Jennie @GodzillaJoe I went to all three games at the Coliseum at the start of July in my Sox jersey and hat and I got no grief from any A's fan inside or outside the stadium, just a little very good-natured banter with the guys around me in the seats.
@Jennie Yeah, plus now there's an extra old boy, since the A's acquired George Kottaras as a backup.
@Jennie Yes. Yes, they do. Was at the game against the Angels Tuesday, watched yet another Josh Reddick home run.
@Sox in the Desert Actually no, he wasn't. I was sitting dead center behind the plate in the 2ns deck and could see he gave both teams some very generous strikes that were clearly outside.
I just checked the pitching matchup for tonight. Dice-K against Jarrod Parker. Parker is basically a rookie (apart from one game for Arizona last year) and has been doing very well. I've seen him a couple of times in flesh and more on TV, he's very handy. So I guess bringing the big boy bats would be a good idea tonight. I bet the A's fancy their chances against Dice-K.
@English Sox Fan Thanks mate. Of course your first game is going to be at Fenway, which is will be even better. We're going to be in Boston in August (well, Newport, RI actually) for my wife's cousin's wedding, so I'm hoping to get to at least one game at Fenway, as it's in middle of a home stand.
My first ever Red Sox game tonight! Also tomorrow and Wednesday. It would be many kinds of awesome if I got to see the Large Father hit #400, but all I really care about is seeing the Sox win. I have no idea what to expect. I've been to a bunch of A's games this year and they're perfectly capable of any combination of results; they have good rookie starting pitching and good hitting (when the bats are alive), but they're hopeless when the bats are asleep. Then again they've swept both the Dodgers and the Rangers at home in the last few weeks. Josh Reddick has been an unqualified success in right field and at the plate since we traded him for Bailey and might be a little extra motivated. Plus there's Cespedes who's very good in center field and regularly produces monstrous hits to left center. Still, it's just as easy to see the Sox sweeping. Critical factor is going to be whether the Sox can get a decent number of hits. If not I think we can sweep. If not, anything can happen.
I'm gutted about this. With Mike Lowell's retirement at the end of 2010, Youk was my favourite player. I just moved to the US from England seven months ago and next week I'm finally getting to see the Sox in the flesh - I have tickets for the three games in Oakland. I knew he was probably going to be traded this year, but I assumed it wouldn't be before the All-Star break, maybe at the trade deadline. But no. Gone sooner and before I see the team play. I don't even get to see Youk play for the White Sox either, they have only one series in Oakland this year and it was in April. Bah, bah and thrice bah.
I bet Ozzie Guillen is laughing his cock end off.
I'm super excited for the new season - this is my first year as a US resident and I can't wait. We finally made the move from England to Californai in November. Like ESF I'm hoping to get to my first Sox game this year. If not in Boston I should at least be able to take in the series at Oakland in August. Looking forward to getting to AT&T Park reguarly too.
There'd rarely be a dull moment if Ozzie was in charge and anyone who abuses that gigantic shithead Mariotti in public gets a thumbs-up from me. I doubt it's going to dull in Miami next year. But for the good of the Sox I would love to see Joe Maddon take over. I'd be pretty confident about our chances with him in charge. Shame it won't happen.
I had no confidence that we were going to win last night, but that had nothing to do with Bedard who I think did a good job considering his fitness level, but everything to do with his opponent being Masterson. Masterson has owned the Sox ever since he was traded for V-Mart and always seems to beat us. I was sorry to see him go then and I really wish we had him in the rotation now.
English Sox Fan You and me both.
Fla Beck/Becky Mine's fine. About a minute behind the action I think, judging by the comments here, but that's normal.
English Sox Fan Well, now you know for sure who's got the tits in that relationship.
hannah82 Evening!
