Santa Cruz Sox
Santa Cruz, CA
Another English Sox fan. English by birth, British by nationality, Californian by choice.
I live in the Bay Area now and I watch the A's a lot, both on TV and in the flesh. A lot of people, me included, are pretty disappointed that Billy Beane didn't resign Gomes. He did an excellent job in Oakland this year, both on the field and in the clubhouse. He's pretty average as a DH but he was effective playing in left field. If he's not staying in Oakland I'm happy that he's going to the Sox. I feel much the same about him as Cody Ross after he left the Giants for Boston.

@English Sox Fan Me too, that's why I moved here :-D

@English Sox Fan Have a great time fella. I was in the area for the Cleveland games a couple of weekends ago but to my intense annoyance I didn't get to go, so I spent a day and a half fuming on Martha's Vineyard visiting my wife's sister instead of enjoying Fenway Park.

@Jennie @GodzillaJoe I went to all three games at the Coliseum at the start of July in my Sox jersey and hat and I got no grief from any A's fan inside or outside the stadium, just a little very good-natured banter with the guys around me in the seats.

@Jennie Yeah, plus now there's an extra old boy, since the A's acquired George Kottaras as a backup.
2 years, 6 months ago on Blow It Up. Now.
@Jennie Yes. Yes, they do. Was at the game against the Angels Tuesday, watched yet another Josh Reddick home run.
@Sox in the Desert Actually no, he wasn't. I was sitting dead center behind the plate in the 2ns deck and could see he gave both teams some very generous strikes that were clearly outside.

I just checked the pitching matchup for tonight. Dice-K against Jarrod Parker. Parker is basically a rookie (apart from one game for Arizona last year) and has been doing very well. I've seen him a couple of times in flesh and more on TV, he's very handy. So I guess bringing the big boy bats would be a good idea tonight. I bet the A's fancy their chances against Dice-K.
@English Sox Fan Thanks mate. Of course your first game is going to be at Fenway, which is will be even better. We're going to be in Boston in August (well, Newport, RI actually) for my wife's cousin's wedding, so I'm hoping to get to at least one game at Fenway, as it's in middle of a home stand.
My first ever Red Sox game tonight! Also tomorrow and Wednesday. It would be many kinds of awesome if I got to see the Large Father hit #400, but all I really care about is seeing the Sox win. I have no idea what to expect. I've been to a bunch of A's games this year and they're perfectly capable of any combination of results; they have good rookie starting pitching and good hitting (when the bats are alive), but they're hopeless when the bats are asleep. Then again they've swept both the Dodgers and the Rangers at home in the last few weeks. Josh Reddick has been an unqualified success in right field and at the plate since we traded him for Bailey and might be a little extra motivated. Plus there's Cespedes who's very good in center field and regularly produces monstrous hits to left center. Still, it's just as easy to see the Sox sweeping. Critical factor is going to be whether the Sox can get a decent number of hits. If not I think we can sweep. If not, anything can happen.
@Blaiser I will be wearing my #20 road jersey at the A's games anyway in the same spirit!

I'm gutted about this. With Mike Lowell's retirement at the end of 2010, Youk was my favourite player. I just moved to the US from England seven months ago and next week I'm finally getting to see the Sox in the flesh - I have tickets for the three games in Oakland. I knew he was probably going to be traded this year, but I assumed it wouldn't be before the All-Star break, maybe at the trade deadline. But no. Gone sooner and before I see the team play. I don't even get to see Youk play for the White Sox either, they have only one series in Oakland this year and it was in April. Bah, bah and thrice bah.
I bet Ozzie Guillen is laughing his cock end off.

I'm super excited for the new season - this is my first year as a US resident and I can't wait. We finally made the move from England to Californai in November. Like ESF I'm hoping to get to my first Sox game this year. If not in Boston I should at least be able to take in the series at Oakland in August. Looking forward to getting to AT&T Park reguarly too.

There'd rarely be a dull moment if Ozzie was in charge and anyone who abuses that gigantic shithead Mariotti in public gets a thumbs-up from me. I doubt it's going to dull in Miami next year. But for the good of the Sox I would love to see Joe Maddon take over. I'd be pretty confident about our chances with him in charge. Shame it won't happen.
3 years, 3 months ago on Five People Who Will Not Manage The 2012 Red Sox
I had no confidence that we were going to win last night, but that had nothing to do with Bedard who I think did a good job considering his fitness level, but everything to do with his opponent being Masterson. Masterson has owned the Sox ever since he was traded for V-Mart and always seems to beat us. I was sorry to see him go then and I really wish we had him in the rotation now.

@Fla Beck/Becky Mine's fine. About a minute behind the action I think, judging by the comments here, but that's normal.
@English Sox Fan Well, now you know for sure who's got the tits in that relationship.
Well, fuck me, my time zone conversion failed, I was thinking it was going to be another hour before the start. All right, let's go Sox!
@English Sox Fan Well, I can too, really. I just shouldn't. I need to be compos mentis by early afternoon, got a phone interview at 6pm to prepare for.
Goddammit, another 8.45 start now. Come on, weather - cut us transatlantic fans a break. I can't stay up til 6am tonight.
Jesus Christ! That makes Joyce's call look uncontroversial. I would say that situations like this should be subject to appeal and replay. With technology available, decisions as critical as this and Joyce's there is no excuse whatsoever for a call this bad. Meals should be fired for making an error this bad - it's incomprehensible.
3 years, 7 months ago on Instant Replay Anyone?
@BB.13 Yeah, I can't argue with any of that. I've said for ages that any win is as good as any other win (except over MFY). I guess it's more that even mediocre reliever are supposed avoid giving up runs and Morales has so far not instilled any confidence that he could protect a small lead.
3 years, 7 months ago on A Brief But Salient Reminder for the Boston Red Sox Players
Christ, that was painful. There's got to be a better solution for closing games with substantial leads than throwing Morales in.
@English Sox Fan I don't know why Tito didn't leave Albers in; I feel a lot more confident about him than Morales.
Nice work Ells - love to see a guy hustling with a six run lead. Excellent.
Shame Tek couldn't do that when he had the bases loaded!
@English Sox Fan I believe the correct phrase is "Yankee reject, Yankee reject, hello!"
Well, this is going a bloody sight better than last night!
@English Sox Fan Me too. I canned it after the 3rd inning. Certainly glad I didn't stay up until 7am in order to see us lose to a shower of shite like Kansas City.

Apparently we;re looking at a 9.30pm start at the moment.
@jules I knew there was at least one other Giants fan here :-) I'll have to look you up when we land in the Bay Area, though no doubt we won't get there until after the baseball season is done.
@English Sox Fan Glad to hear it! It's a bit tedious though - the Giants aren't playing tonight and I don't care remotely about any of the other games until the A's start at 3am. I suppose I could watch the Cleveland game since they're currently winning and I hate the Angels. Not quite as much as I hate the Cubs, though.
@English Sox Fan Very true. Also, I have absolutely no self-discipline whatsoever. Hence me staying up all night for the 1-0 16 inning game and that other marathon earlier in the year.
Not happy about this damn rain delay. I was hoping to squeeze in most of the game before hitting the hay so I can get up and out to London in the morning - got my medical for my Green Card application.
@toosoxy Makes me nervous too. But I have to believe there should be no problem even if Lester only throws an OK game.

@Sox in the Desert I can deal with that. At least I won't be surrounded by fucking Yankee fans and besides, I like both the local teams :-)
3 years, 8 months ago on And Now a Quick Update on the 2011 Red Sox for the Benefit of Those Who’ve Been Busy Watching Hockey, Courtesy of the Ellis Burks Glamour Shot
@Sox in the Desert Really excellent post. I should declare my own position here. I'm English, I live in England (for now - we are planning a move to California later this year). I've been a baseball fan for about nine years. I was originally a Florida Marlins fan for reasons too boring to relate. I switched to the Red Sox before the 06 season started due to two things: getting married to a girl from Maine and the Marlins trading Mike Lowell to Boston (more the latter, to be honest).
My experience is that my friends in the US mostly really don't like the Sox. Basically I know two sets of people in the US. My wife's family are from Maine and of course everyone's a Sox fan, except her dad who follows the MFY because his 2nd wife does and he delights in being contrary, but with whom I can have an adult conversation about baseball and the two teams, and my sister-in-law's husband from CT about whom all I can say is the fact that he's an archetypal asshole MFY fan is his least obnoxious quality.
We have a bunch of friends in California in the Santa Cruz area, who are all either A's or Giants fans. I find myself really disappointed at how much they tend to dislike the Sox, but it seems widespread. I've been following the A's and particularly the Giants as well as the Sox since I first visited the Bay Area four years ago and I notice from reading Giants and A's websites that fans of both teams really dislike the Sox. This seems to me to be for three reasons: 1) A's fans resent Boston's financial muscle, just like they resent any team with money, 2) Giants fans think Boston fans have turned into arrogant entitled assholes since winning the Series in 04 and are just like MFY fans, 3) both sets of fans resent the Sox and Yankees because of media bias. We were at an A's game a couple of years ago and listened to two women bitching about other fans; they reserved particular disdain for Sox fans. I do think it's pretty common for fans of other teams to have gone off the Sox since winning the Series; my friend Jennifer in Long Island, a diehard Mets fan, doesn't like the Sox anymore.
@BeardedInMD @jules I'm also watching the Giants game now. I gotta say I really like Jon Miller. I used to hate those ESPN games but listening to Jon Miller call Giants games made me realise how little that was him and how much it was Joe Morgan. ESPN should have just fired Morgan.

Wow, a manager's really thrown in the towel when he puts the second baseman in to pitch instead of using a reliever.
@English Sox Fan Yeah, that annoyed the piss out of me until I figured out how to correct it. As you've seen, it often show some really bizarre standings.
