@jpk0721 I went back and forth on Ovie several times. It was a difficult decision, but all of the moving parts around him should lead to a really interesting 2014-15.

@Kevin1157 Why not change it to an icing call instead of a two-minute penalty?

@jrw924 I'm not an advocate of the plus/minus statistic, but it's certainly noticeable when you have a (-23) which ranks last on a pretty bad team. Butler did play the most games of any Calgary defenseman, so that's at least partially to blame, but it's still an ugly stat.
Still, I think Butler should do pretty well in his role as the 6th or 7th defensemen in St. Louis. I'm not overly worried about plus/minus as I am seeing what kind of chemistry and physicality he can bring to the group.
1 month, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/chris-butler-signs-with-the-blues.html
@jrw924 It's sad how things worked out, but I agree with you. I think the Blues were pretty fair with their offers.
1 month, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/report-sobotka-will-spend-one-year-in-khl-before-returning-to-new-nhl-team.html
@miendiem It's a shame that it took so long to develop too. Should the Blues be able to flip him now, you have to imagine it won't be for much considering all of the uncertainty. Probably could have gotten more before the Draft, but I'm guessing it was more of a surprise than most people think. If not, the Blues may have missed an opportunity to get a bit more for what appears to be a wasted asset.
@jrw924 I think your last statement is extremely accurate. Ott probably will have a better year with the team's added depth which will allow him to slide into a role which better suits his play.

@miendiem Honestly, how ridiculous would it be if you're a Leafs fan and they actually landed all 4? I'm betting a lot of loans would be taken out to afford all those tickets.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://bloguin.com/puckdrunklove/2014-articles/toronto-maple-leafs-want-to-host-everything-for-their-100th-birthday.html
@miendiem Yeah, that's a fair guess. There are plenty of old, veteran netminders still out there, but I doubt any of them would want to spend any time in the AHL. Net is definitely an area of transition for the Blues.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/ken-hitchcock-on-goaltending-this-is-brian-elliotts-job.html
@miendiem Based on the current roster, who is your #3? If Allen or Elliott goes down with an injury, who comes up? Is that person on the roster yet?
@miendiem 1A and 1B would make a lot of sense, but I still wonder how the Blues will handle Allen. I think I alluded to my thoughts in the "Two Big Questions" post, but it looks like Hitchcock is being a bit more cautious about the situation than I believed. Allen and is limited NHL experience will see time, but it's nice to see they'll ease him in.
@jrw924 They really do. We'll have to wait and see what the actual sweaters look like, but that's what I thought of as well. I first believed the club was going to go back a bit further in their roots for the new sweaters, but these aren't bad either.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/heres-the-rumored-new-blues-uniforms.html
@miendiem I've also heard they may move to a lighter shade of blue. That sounds like a pretty risky move, depending on how light of a blue they actually would use.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/
@jrw924 I didn't even think about keeping a sweater clean. That's a really good point from a fan's perspective.
@miendiem I'd be pretty happy if the white patches on the home were removed. They really don't make much sense. I've heard rumors that the piping would be removed or more subtle, but we'll have to see what happens.
@miendiem I actually don't mind the current uniforms. I own a Backes home sweater currently that I got a couple of years ago. I actually went this route because the alternates were so prevalent. I'm not quite as excited about the changes as some people are, but I am hoping the changes are mostly subtle.
@miendiem Even when you disagree, though it may be minor, I'm left nodding my head. I'm definitely on board that Gunnarsson is an improvement over Polak, but I kind of wish the team would have added a physical upgrade over a puck-moving upgrade. I know I've said that before, but I think it's an issue few people are realizing needs to be addressed.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/two-big-questions-remain-for-the-st-louis-blues.html
@miendiem I thought for sure the Lehtera deal meant that Stastny was as good as history. Never thought both would arrive. Now I'm really, really wondering where Berglund goes...
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/blues-sign-paul-stastny-to-a-four-year-contract.html
@miendiem I assume it'll be Sobotka and then as of right now it looks like Jaskin or Paajarvi will be involved. That may all change should the Blues land a center and if they decide to sign Ott. Currently I'm not too confident in the third line and think that it needs some attention.
2 months ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/discussing-the-infatuation-over-jason-spezza.html
@miendiem I would have thought Stastny was a total long shot, but Colorado's insistence to play the waiting game is really puzzling. I'd rather have a Stastny over a Spezza, but that's kind of an obvious statement considering one is a signing and one is a trade.
Hope you enjoyed your shout out!
@cheepnis A nightmare is paying a player for 8 years to NOT play on your team.
2 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://bloguin.com/puckdrunklove/2014-articles/the-islanders-alexei-yashin-nightmare-finally-ends-after-2014-15.html
@miendiem The Blues have a wealth of 3rd and 4th line options and way too few 1st and 2nd line options. In my opinion, Porter has always been on the fringe of being an NHL skater. Sure, he was a member of the line that shut everything down, but I think he could have easily been replaced with a different skater and the line would still be effective.

3 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/blues-let-ryan-miller-walk-trade-was-an-expensive-rental.html
@RandyHayes I personally wouldn't label Miller as the scapegoat. Instead, I'd say the team made the Miller trade when they should have made a trade to boost offense. Pricey mistake.
Solid recap. Represents my thoughts fairly well.

@miendiem "People-moving d-men". That's awesome. I'm going to have to remember that description. Speaking of physicality on defense - Roman Polak. I didn't follow him individually, but it seems like he was less physical while out on the ice. It'd be difficult to do, but if you were to compare Polak from the playoffs in 2013-14 to the one from 2012-13 and especially the one from 2011-12, I think you'd find he was no where near as aggressive and physical in his own zone.
4 months ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/blues-implode-tumble-out-of-the-playoffs.html
@miendiem Jess (Teach Me How to Bergie) may need to be consoled if the Blues ever deal Berglund.
Kind of interesting seeing so many "trade Shattenkirk" comments out there. Those definitely fall in "knee-jerk" category, but it does raise a point about the defense. Is there enough size? Chicago's forwards didn't have too many problems behind the net. St. Louis defenders almost always opted to use their stick to dislodge the puck as opposed to hitting the forward. Probably an area the Blues could improve on.
@miendiem I think we line up with just about everything here. I wouldn't mind keeping Lapierre as I felt he played well in the playoffs, but his style definitely carries a risk. Paajarvi is a player I'm optimistic about. He really grew in the second half and I'm hoping he takes another step forward next season.
Berglund...it's been fun, but that's that.
Ott is another guy I'm OK with keeping if these two conditions are met: 1) He's not used in the top-6 and 2) he's a super cheap.
@miendiem Your first sentence is a perfect summary. It was actually refreshing to see most of Twitter (most of the level headed individuals at least) realizing that point.

4 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/steve-ott-jokes-about-having-one-of-the-nhls-worst-plusminus-ratings.html
@KReilly Both. Nyquist and Tatar were solid prospects to say the least (Nyquist a bit more so) and both men appeared to have bright futures. They've definitely made an impact quicker than many expected, but it's not a complete surprise. I don't think anyone could have predicted just how important the two would be at this stage, so it's tough to completely blame the Flames. The Flames denial may have simply been because they wanted a goalie in the deal.
4 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://bloguin.com/puckdrunklove/2014-articles/did-the-flames-turn-down-a-huge-offer-for-jay-bouwmeester.html
@miendiem A healthy Chris Stewart would have sounded pretty good during the 6-game slide. May still sound good come playoff time.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/steve-ott-jokes-about-having-one-of-the-nhls-worst-plusminus-ratings.html
@miendiem Have to ask: Miller's performance with the Blues is ... 1) What you expected 2) Better than expected (within reason) or 3) Worse than expected. He had ridiculously high expectations (see Halak when he joined the Blues after his playoff run with Montreal), but I think even reasonable expectations were missed by a wide margin to date.
Now, he may go on a crazy run in the playoffs and make all of us doubters look dumb, or there could be some truth to the fact the Blues were fine in net before the trade.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/2013-14-ryan-miller-vs-jaroslav-halak-vs-brian-elliott.html
@meegat I think you're mostly correct. Miller was in net for the worst hockey the Blues have played this season. That's definitely a factor. However, he was also in net for the tail end of some of their best hockey as well and yet his save percentage still hovered near .905%. I think he wasn't completely on his game and then when things with the rest of the team went south a not so good situation turned into an ugly one.
@miendiem All 3 coaches look pretty somber. It's as if they know the losing streak which awaits them.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/roman-polak-looks-thrilled-to-be-in-the-team-photo.html
@miendiem As always, great post. For me, it's incredible the difference Tarasenko makes when he is/isn't in the lineup. He is the difference maker. What's remarkable is that he, compared to others in the league, isn't a "star" by definition. It just really goes to show you what having one, or two real marquee guys can do to a team's offense.
I'm not usually one to press the panic button, but the current trends are ones which won't be adjusted easily. They're serious issues. It's as if the team needs to start from scratch at the worst possible time.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/blues-struggles-are-disheartening-but-not-surprising.html
@KReilly Correct. Every team has a player nominated.
4 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/2014/alexander-steen-nominated-for-masterton-trophy.html
@miendiem I agree. The schedule certainly leans in favor of Boston. Then again, I would have expected them to beat Detroit and Toronto this week and that didn't happen. Will be interesting to see how it plays out, but in my personal opinion, I really don't care about the Presidents' Trophy. It's a nice distinction, but I certainly don't get excited about it.
4 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://frozennotes.com/
@miendiem I think that's fair, though goaltending hasn't been our weakness in the playoffs. I'm on edge with Tarasenko sidelined.

@miendiem Correct. Should be the exact same look and feel as you've seen on PDL. It's also kind of awesome and appropriate you're the first comment for this new version.
@miendiem Reaves seems to be an obvious choice too, but I really like what he brings to the fold. No one else can replicate his size and strength when it comes to the forecheck.
5 months, 3 weeks ago on Who sits when Vladimir Sobotka returns?
As for Halak, I'm left wondering what went on behind the scenes. I assume the goaltending change and the decision to bench him was probably just a move to spark the rest of the team, but I think it may have also been tied to something which took place off the ice. It's pretty surprising to see a team bench a pretty solid NHL netminder in favor of a KHL guy. Was there more to that incident than meets the eye?
