@gravey94 no they can pick anyone even if they dont go to camp and more likely this year as there is no skating...the hockey canada camp this time around is just to discuss strategy and how they expect to travel and play...it would cost them over a million each time they took the ice to cover insurance so they aren't skating

There is no practice at the Team Canada camp at all....they wont be on the Ice at all, there are insurance issues so they arent covered
Dubi will be one of the As on that team....Jack Johnson will be the captain. He is beloved there and has been playing really well this year

@cb1 Most wingers, probably more than 70%, actually play on their strong hand.....ovechkin is one of the only NHL players to play on their off wing......the idea behind that is that when moving the puck out of your own zone along the boards, you're on your strong hand and also when recieving a pass in the neutral zone and breaking into the off zone you are on your forehand

@slapshot13j 100% agree, we should buyout richie and go for perry, tho perry is a right winger. perry nash cally, hags, step gabby and miller....that would look really nice.
On another note.....do you guys think it is worth trading Gabby this off-season before his contract is up after next season? I personally don't want to extend his deal and would rather get something for him now
12 months ago on Stepan Becoming Rangers Top Center
I def thought O'Reilly would have been better to have but Step has made me take a second thought. I think I would still prefer O'Rielly but its much closer than I thought and Steps been awesome lately.
I love step and love the play, take nothing away from him....great power move and pass by cally and great job going to the net at an angle away from Leopold by Step.....but what is Leopold doing? that is horrid defense, it reminds me of what we saw from Gilroy and Del Zotto their rookie years, just reaching for the puck aimlessly and not taking the body

@AnnoyingJoe @KevinDeLury Thats not close to true...any type of statistic has meaning. Its not like these are abstract stats, they are pretty simple to understand. Corsi judges the difference between amount of shots taken by your team versus the amount of shots taken by the opposition while on the ice. Thats a pretty solid indicator of possession and territorial advantage. The fact that Stepan had a negative corsi while having 62% offensive zone starts shows that while he is on the ice, the rangers lose possession of the puck more often than not. O'Reilly is the opposite. And given the quality of competition difference that makes O'Reilly look even better. And again QoC isnt a abstract stat either, its pretty simple. These stats are like WAR in baseball or stuff like projections of what players are and how good they are. these are simple things taken from actual events occurring during a game.

@shishya100 Stole turris? Turris is good but some analysts still think today that Phoenix got the better end of that trade. At the time David Runblad was considered one of the top 5 NHL prospects and many people still see him as a top line offensive defenseman.
@KevinDeLury Steps great but O'Reilly is the better player...still would trade step for him anyday

@KevinDeLury @thelink44 First off, O'Reilly's first two yrs were when he was 18 and 19, the two years that Stepan was still at Wisco, so the comparison of the first two years doesn't work so well. If you compare last year, they had similar offensive years, O'reilly had 55 points while Step had 51. But there is actually a huge difference in how effective each player was. First off, Stepan's relative Corsi rating (a great measure of both puck possession as well as territorial advantage) for '11-'12 was -1.8, while O'Reilly's was 12.4. Thats a huge difference and those possession/shot differential numbers become even more staggering when considering that O'Reilly had offensive zone starts of 50% while Stepan had 62% ozone starts. Only one Avs forward had a lower ozone start percentage, while only one Ranger (Gabby) had a higher ozone start percentage than Step. Furthermore, O'Reilly played against much better competition with O'Reilly having a .035 QoC rating, while Step had a .015 QoC Rating. Torts sheltered Step's playing time (as he should) while O'Reilly was given tough assignments and performed incredibly well. With regards to defensive play and play in their own zone, its hands down O'Reilly. O'Reilly had 101 takeaways last year while Step had 51 (101 would have been the most on the Rangers by 50). I think all of that demonstrates that on a worse team, with less good offensive opportunities and against tougher competition, O'Reilly was still the better player in almost every category last year. And furthermore, O'Reilly has tons of room to grow as a player. I believe he would the perfect second line center for years to come for any team. I think he is underrated one of the better young players in the game and will start to show how good he is once he gets back playing. I love Stepan and I love that he is a Ranger through and through but O'Reilly is the better player and the type of second line center that can be essential to winning a cup.
As much as I love Step and love him being a ranger, Stepan and O'reilly are not the same player sadly...O'reilly is much better....one of the top two way centers out there and hes just 22. Awesome on faceoffs and in his own zone and great penalty killer and just starting to scratch the surface offensively. He is perfect for Torts system. He would be great #2 center for the rangers....I would give up stepan, a defense prospect like brady and a prospect like skeji or fogarty. I hear the Avs are looking for a Dman in return so it might be hard to do but hes definitely worth it.
nvm, kolarik just got traded for Benn Ferriero

I think newbury is badly needed, guy won 60% of his draws with the rangers the past two-three years and is a great fourth line winger or center-man who can flip flop in and out with asham. Halpern, Newbury, Rupp is a lot better than having bickel there. After last nights performance in the face-off circle, something needs to be done. And I personally don't think Kreider should be in the NHL just yet, let him gain some confidence in the AHL and move up later....he's a grounded motivated kid and will work hard and not be discouraged by such a move. I think kolarik should be brought up to replace Kreider and chip in on the 3rd line. Think the team would benefit from these moves right now and in the long term as well.
I think its best for him to be there. He's playing the top end young talent in the world and also getting some time as a top line forward. Going up against Nugent-Hopkins can only make him better. And him struggling is fine, he needs to struggle and to learn from mistakes and adversity. He is still just 19. And most importantly, this might be the last time he ever gets to play for team USA and in no way shape or form should anyone stop him from having that honor. Sure there are the world championships and the Olympics, but hopefully he's always in the playoffs and unavailable for the WCs, and unfortunately I dont know if he is of the talent level to play for the US in the olympics. This is great for him, both in his development and an incredible experience that he deserves
