@gravey94 no they can pick anyone even if they dont go to camp and more likely this year as there is no skating...the hockey canada camp this time around is just to discuss strategy and how they expect to travel and play...it would cost them over a million each time they took the ice to cover insurance so they aren't skating

@cb1 Most wingers, probably more than 70%, actually play on their strong hand.....ovechkin is one of the only NHL players to play on their off wing......the idea behind that is that when moving the puck out of your own zone along the boards, you're on your strong hand and also when recieving a pass in the neutral zone and breaking into the off zone you are on your forehand

@slapshot13j 100% agree, we should buyout richie and go for perry, tho perry is a right winger. perry nash cally, hags, step gabby and miller....that would look really nice.

On another note.....do you guys think it is worth trading Gabby this off-season before his contract is up after next season? I personally don't want to extend his deal and would rather get something for him now

I def thought O'Reilly would have been better to have but Step has made me take a second thought. I think I would still prefer O'Rielly but its much closer than I thought and Steps been awesome lately.

I love step and love the play, take nothing away from him....great power move and pass by cally and great job going to the net at an angle away from Leopold by Step.....but what is Leopold doing? that is horrid defense, it reminds me of what we saw from Gilroy and Del Zotto their rookie years, just reaching for the puck aimlessly and not taking the body

@AnnoyingJoe  @KevinDeLury  Thats not close to true...any type of statistic has meaning. Its not like these are abstract stats, they are pretty simple to understand. Corsi judges the difference between amount of shots taken by your team versus the amount of shots taken by the opposition while on the ice. Thats a pretty solid indicator of possession and territorial advantage. The fact that Stepan had a negative corsi while having 62% offensive zone starts shows that while he is on the ice, the rangers lose possession of the puck more often than not. O'Reilly is the opposite. And given the quality of competition difference that makes O'Reilly look even better. And again QoC isnt a abstract stat either, its pretty simple. These stats are like WAR in baseball or stuff like projections of what players are and how good they are. these are simple things taken from actual events occurring during a game.

@shishya100 Stole turris? Turris is good but some analysts still think today that Phoenix got the better end of that trade. At the time David Runblad was considered one of the top 5 NHL prospects and many people still see him as a top line offensive defenseman.

@KevinDeLury  @thelink44 First off, O'Reilly's first two yrs were when he was 18 and 19, the two years that Stepan was still at Wisco, so the comparison of the first two years doesn't work so well. If you compare last year, they had similar offensive years, O'reilly had 55 points while Step had 51. But there is actually a huge difference in how effective each player was. First off, Stepan's relative Corsi rating (a great measure of both puck possession as well as territorial advantage) for '11-'12 was -1.8, while O'Reilly's was 12.4. Thats a huge difference and those possession/shot differential numbers become even more staggering when considering that O'Reilly had offensive zone starts of 50% while Stepan had 62% ozone starts. Only one Avs forward had a lower ozone start percentage, while only one Ranger (Gabby) had a higher ozone start percentage than Step. Furthermore, O'Reilly played against much better competition with O'Reilly having a .035 QoC rating, while Step had a .015 QoC Rating. Torts sheltered Step's playing time (as he should) while O'Reilly was given tough assignments and performed incredibly well. With regards to defensive play and play in their own zone, its hands down O'Reilly. O'Reilly had 101 takeaways last year while Step had 51 (101 would have been the most on the Rangers by 50). I think all of that demonstrates that on a worse team, with less good offensive opportunities and against tougher competition, O'Reilly was still the better player in almost every category last year. And furthermore, O'Reilly has tons of room to grow as a player. I believe he would the perfect second line center for years to come for any team. I think he is underrated one of the better young players in the game and will start to show how good he is once he gets back playing. I love Stepan and I love that he is a Ranger through and through but O'Reilly is the better player and the type of second line center that can be essential to winning a cup.

As much as I love Step and love him being a ranger, Stepan and O'reilly are not the same player sadly...O'reilly is much better....one of the top two way centers out there and hes just 22. Awesome on faceoffs and in his own zone and great penalty killer and just starting to scratch the surface offensively. He is perfect for Torts system. He would be great #2 center for the rangers....I would give up stepan, a defense prospect like brady and a prospect like skeji or fogarty. I hear the Avs are looking for a Dman in return so it might be hard to do but hes definitely worth it.

I think newbury is badly needed, guy won 60% of his draws with the rangers the past two-three years and is a great fourth line winger or center-man who can flip flop in and out with asham. Halpern, Newbury, Rupp is a lot better than having bickel there. After last nights performance in the face-off circle, something needs to be done. And I personally don't think Kreider should be in the NHL just yet, let him gain some confidence in the AHL and move up later....he's a grounded motivated kid and will work hard and not be discouraged by such a move. I think kolarik should be brought up to replace Kreider and chip in on the 3rd line. Think the team would benefit from these moves right now and in the long term as well.

I think its best for him to be there. He's playing the top end young talent in the world and also getting some time as a top line forward. Going up against Nugent-Hopkins can only make him better. And him struggling is fine, he needs to struggle and to learn from mistakes and adversity. He is still just 19. And most importantly, this might be the last time he ever gets to play for team USA and in no way shape or form should anyone stop him from having that honor. Sure there are the world championships and the Olympics, but hopefully he's always in the playoffs and unavailable for the WCs, and unfortunately I dont know if he is of the talent level to play for the US in the olympics. This is great for him, both in his development and an incredible experience that he deserves

@5holeblog yes and that means what exactly?....I think your missing my point. that banner shouldn't be there either, just because they won the Stanley cup that year doesn't make that banner more meaningful. Neither years' division championship should be hung in the rafters. For example, in college basketball the University of Kentucky only hangs National Championship banners because though other accomplishments like SEC championships or final four appearances might be nice, they aren't what matters in the end. They play to win National Championships. In the NHL, the Canadiens only hang Stanley Cup banners because that's all that's worth hanging. You play to win Stanley Cups, not to win division championships. Though it was an awesome and wonderful season, they didn't win the Stanley Cup and no banner should be hung.

Miller is a good player...but in no way should he have gone higher in that draft and a very solid argument can be made that the rangers picked him too high and could have picked other more talented players ahead of him...most scouts believed then and still believe now that Nathan Beaulieu, Oscar Klefbom, Connor Murphy, Joel Armia, Zach Phillips and even Brandon Saad are all better players and better prospects than Miller. Not taking anything away from Miller, who seems like an awesome talent and most importantly an awesome character player but he fell to the rangers for good reason

@SirKengin@andrewstamant29 However, what you seem to keep forgetting is that attendance and viewership are highest when playing rivals. making "the anticipation" greater would not make the NHL more money. The way rivals are made is through geography but most importantly through meaningful games. Games are most important in the playoffs so rivalries are born in the playoffs. Splitting up rivals like the devils rangers, habs bruins and similar rivalries is idiotic and would make the NHL less exciting and hurt the NHL overall. In addition, the NHL is definitely interested in minimizing travel but this is still a business and this system wouldnt allow the NHL to maximize its profits, which is sadly their number one concern.

and i didnt even see u have the canucks and all those western teams in the rangers and other teams conference. that couldnt be a worse idea for travel costs as well as to make travel easier on the players. in addition, another reason not a single NHL would approve this propsal is that with western teams in the rangers conference, 1/3 or more of the rangers and other eastern teams games would be on the west coast starting at 1000 in NYC and the east. this would kill the TV market. yes the rangers do play in the west this year but they make one or two trips and dont have to go there all the time to play teams in their conference. The NHL and the NHL teams would lose money due to more travel and less prime time TV games and that factor alone makes this system that can not be implemented.

@ivanricov ya i agree with you about the flyers, they are just so hateable. I think that a system could be figure out to do that, but I really support the playoff system thats in the article. that could be awesome. In the end I think the NHL will do whats best for each team and that will be whats best for travel. I think its a terrible mistake to remove the redwings from the central division but they are apparently most likely getting moved east instead of the Preds. How could the NHL move the wings and hawks out of the same division and still sleep well at night?

i agree we have rivalries right now. I completely hate the caps, pens and flyers but when we start playing meaningful games in the playoffs we might not always play them, so why not input this system and create even better rivalries. It seems best to make teams play the same teams in the playoffs each year, creating better more exciting hockey. Perhaps there is a way for the pens and flyers to remain in our conference or division. That can only be good for the NHL in my opinion.

4.25 per year are good deals for cally and dubie. it doesnt matter what any of us think is a fair deal, it matters what the market deems a fair deal. A player is worth just as much as someone is willing to pay them. If erik cole and ville leino, who both are older and had comparable if not worse seasons than cally and dubie, got 4.5 per year than thats a good valuation for cally and dubie. if someone is willing to pay them 4.5 then there definitely is some team out there willing to give 4.5 to cally and dubie. Cally and dubie should not take hometown discounts, instead they should try and get as much money as they can. A good NHL career is 10-15 years and so a player must try and maximize their earnings over such a short period. Lord knows that every single one of us would try and get the most money possible if we were in their shoes. The rangers should wrap these guys up and make sure they are with the rangers for a while.

why is every second and third line player getting way overpaid? this could potentially kill the rangers in negotiations with cally, dubie, anisimov, boyle and saure. If erik cole is getting 4.5 mill, do dubie and cally who were expected to get 4 each get 5 each now or more. This isnt going well for the rangers and we arent even invovled yet.

I wish Chris Drury could have stayed and I wish that after he is bought out we could sign him for the league minimum or something like that. I will miss Captain Clutch greatly and I will never forget the way he played and the unrelenting effort he showed day in and day out. Remember this man buried a goal in the last seconds of the devils rangers game last season to propel us to a victory that put the rangers on a roll that led us to one shootout save from a playoff birth. Though he didnt play much this year and couldnt score often, he did once again score a clutch goal, tieing up the last game of the regular season against the devils that clinched the playoffs for the rangers. Chris Drury is a wonderful man and captain and he should not be hated by rangers nation for the contract he signed but instead should be loved for the way he played. We as rangers fans can ask nothing more from a player than for his best effort every night and players like Chris Drury make me proud to be a rangers fan.

is it possible for drury to be bought out and then sign for a small amount? since brad richards seems like a bad idea, wouldnt it be great to have drury as a fourth line center with the A and cally with the C. Drury when healthy is an elite defensive forward, he may not have much offense left, but the guy is a great player on the PK and in the faceoff circle and definately someone I would want on my team.
