@Matthew Heuett @PADJ I wasn't attempting to disect the 4th and one play and see why it failed. Sitting here in full Monday (er...Tuesday) morning QB mode the attempt shouldn't have been called at all. That early on the road in a playoff game, held scoreless to that point, IMHO you can't do anything other than kick the FG.
And if Pete did have a sudden burst of over aggressiveness (or a USC flashback or thought he was home playing Madden or anything else) and you go for it...you hand it to your fullback? Lynch was not his normal self but wouldn't he have still been a better option, allowing Robinson to lead? Or...I dunno...fake the handoff and let Wilson bootleg one?
I've let the game go (believe it or not) and the walls around here are all patched, but in the game I saw, the Hawks won. They flew cross country for the second time in two weeks, went into the #1 seed's place, and except for a couple of (IMHO) boneheaded decisions on the part of the coaching staff, won the game. It will indeed be interesting to see what they do in the off season.

I agree...a whole lotta if's to be considered. And of course had anything happened differently it could have had a bearing on how plays afterwards unfolded so we'll never know. I have a hard time being too upset with Lynch for fumbling on that play. Looked like a good defensive hack to me. But the single thing that I can't choke down is the decision to pass up a chip shot field goal in order to go for it on 4th and 1. That early in the game, that close in, why on earth would you not put points on the board??? Which coulda given the Hawks a 4 point lead late in the 4th instead of only 1 point...which forces Atlanta to score a TD instead of only needing a field goal, and maybe we're talking about an entirely different outcome. Sorry...I'm still yelling at the TV about that decision. Pete and crew must've been watching a different game or something.
