Don't care too much about Kristo - if he gets moved I don't think it hurts too bad. Love the Hayes win/signing! Low risk high reward situation - how many times has Sather achieved that with a signing?

Did John Moore get signed? I think that kid has great potential. I don't think we have any other D-men like him in the pipeline. He's the anti-Del Zotto. Would hate to lose him. Or did we already?

Ah....No. Disagree....but way to stay optimistic! Why must we be happy with mediocrity? True Stepan doesn't suck - but he's not real good either. Sure he's only 24 - but how many full seasons has he played already? He hasn't made significant strides in any one area of his game. I think he's solid - but never gonna dazzle us. If he's gonna be a 50 - 60 point guy he deserves to be a 2nd line center his whole career. End of story. And he should not wreck the salary cap with huge demands. Your 1st line center should be MUCH better offensively. MUCH BETTER. Who that will be for us one day is a frickin' mystery. Man...remember when guys used to put up points for 5 million? Will we ever have a 90-100 point guy again?

@ObviouslyWeHadAGoodRun

the F*d up thing too is that these guys haggling over big bucks are all mediocre players. If you display "average talent" you get millions. Crazy. You no longer need to put up big numbers to get huge paydays. If you put up 40 points you can hold out for big salary cap busting numbers! Ridiculous! I like Zuccarello but he is not a superstar yet - he doesn't DESERVE more than 3 million. Same goes for Brassard. I think Brassard is more like a 1st line center than boring plain vanilla frequently invisible Stepan but he's not worth 5-6 mil per. What a joke!

All of this quibbling over dollars for these guys and we still haven't addressed the need for some size and a true #1 center. We'll have to wait and see next season but all of this makes me feel uneasy - is the roster any better than last season? Doesn't seem so.

Kings are just a really good team. You can't make mistakes against them. We make mistakes. We've played well enough to get here but you gotta take it up a notch. LA doesn't fuck around. Rangers still make bad decisions in the offensive zone. Not enough getting the puck to the net - too much circling around looking for the perfect pass.

First - I grew up a Yankee fan in Queens - I put up with a lot of smack talking Mets fans during any era when they were competitive - especially the 80's and early 90's. Every fan base sees their team as the good guys. Every fan base talks shit. Especially in NY where we like to talk opinionated shit about everything. ie..."fuck you, THIS is the best Pizza place!"  Relax it's par for the course - not a sense of entitlement - whatever that means for a fan. Sorry to disagree Kev - but Mets and Yankee fans hardly see eye to eye. That's natural though. I don't get mad at it.

Second - The Canadiens and Rangers are pretty even teams. They have a strong team - they are quick and resilient, they beat the big bad Bruins. Everyone expected a tough long series. It's only since the Rangers won the first two games and Price got injured that everyone started thinking we were on our way to the finals.  Coaches are always looking for ways to motivate players. Even though he's playing the role of "le asshole" right now, Therrien is firing his team up. It's working. Now instead of sticking with the game plan and staying out of the gutter everyone is getting caught up in the bullshit. Now instead of being the hungry, overachieving underdogs we are the big bad guys and the Canadiens are rallying. What we need is a strong dominant home performance to shut the Canadiens up and fill their little hockey hearts with doubt and desperation. Forget about anything else and calmly go about our business of playing our game. Just like we did against Pittsburgh. No one - including most of us here - though we would get this far. The team needs to keep that inspiration and dogged determination. I think they can do it. I hope the locker room steps up and cooler heads prevail. Use the current circumstances to bond again. Get stronger like in the Pittsburgh series. Honestly  all this talk about penalties and injuries on both sides is just petty whining. Beat them on the score board and they'll shut up. The Rangers got to play like they love being home, like they love the support of their own loud, obnoxious, opinionated, ridiculously loyal fans. (and not cry like babies when the aforementioned long-suffering, highly overcharged fan base boos a weak performance) If they don't kick ass tonight this series is probably not going our way. It feels like we're in a game 7 right now. Momentum change is a huge thing. I want to see us fired up and dominant like in game 1. LETS GO RANGERS!

Annoyed that we can't get a dominating performance at home this season. The Habs are good but we had them in a vulnerable situation and didn't go for the kill. How can we have more energy/success in Montreal? Did we just witness the turning point of the series? Are we Pittsburgh now? All the press shitting on Montreal and making it seem like they were done has turned THEM into the plucky underdog. They are rallying around the rookie in net. They will come hungrier now. They got a taste of blood. If we lose the next home game - this ain't going 7. It's crazy but I got a bad feelin' about this series. This is what sucks about being a Ranger fan...it feels guilty thinking we might actually have success. Jinx!

whoa - let's relax. Who knows what Stralman wants? He might want to test the open market, but he is certainly NO WHERE near as greedy/unrealistic as Callahan. How many times has Stralman been praised here for his steady play? He doesn't make many mistakes. He's no bruiser but he's a solid defenseman. As for his point totals - this is a low scoring team and he doesn't get a ton of minutes - and he is almost never out on the power play. Why is everyone so hopped up on untested AHL rookie kids who might never pan out? If they were ready to be in the NHL they would be here. There is a reason they aren't. Defensemen take longer to develop than forwards. Give it a rest with McIlrath/Allen talk. They are not NHL ready. Stralman is a solid D-man who could get on any roster in the NHL. If played more and given PP time he would probably get more points. Not sure that he's worth that big of a raise but he certainly has the right to try and get a one. Is Girardi worth 5.5 million?

Another thing people need to acknowledge is that in today's NHL the big bad crease clearing defenseman is a thing of the past. If you watch lots of hockey you know that there isn't too much abuse doled out by anyone in front of the crease. It's basically positioning and stick checking. Yes there are a few out there but it's not the same game anymore. You can't be as recklessly physical and you can't crush someone just because there near the net. Everything get called. You definitely need intimidating D-men but ones who can skate and make the clean big hit. Slow footed, hulk, stay at home defensemen are becoming extinct.

Good game the other night - let's see the boys keep it going!

Most fan bases are reactionary. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. That has nothing to do with our current situation.  It doesn't change the fact that Callahan is a gritty two way forward, a beloved gritty two way forward. Do you pay THAT type of player on your team Crosby money? Captain or not the common sense answer is a resounding "NO".  You don't give 2nd/3rd line talent 1st line money. NO FRICKIN' WAY. Again...I'm saying NO. I love Ryan Callahan and his style of play but in no way has he done ANYTHING during his time here to deserve that kind of money. That is just fact. Yes we've been in the playoffs a few times. Callahan was an important but just a small part of an overall team effort. Anyone who knows this team knows the lion's share can only be given to Lundqvist if you are inclined to want to do that. Giving Cally credit for that is silly. Giving him a huge payday for making the playoffs - which a lot of teams do in the NHL, is insane. Put your feelings aside and think about the amount of money he would be making. That's superstar bucks - especially in the Bettman salary cap era. That is laughable. Think of the high scoring, high powered franchise players in the league that make that kind of money....do you consider Callahan to be on that list? Paying him anywhere near the amount of money he and his agent are asking is ludicrously hurtful to this team in many ways. He isn't worth it. It hurts our ability to resign players and go after free agents that can help. TEAM FIRST. Every fan and player (and team captain for that matter) should know that in a perfect world. Obviously that is not the case. Human greed wins out in the end. The Rangers franchise has been mismanaged for a long time. Players love playing here and talk glowingly about it because they know here in the big NYC market they will get top dollar despite their ability. What athlete wouldn't love that and try to get some? If Cally is given a huge raise it will just be another example of Sather's incompetence. Then we'll all get this increase passed onto us in the form of higher ticket prices and cable rates. Gloomy. True. Lame.

It's always nice to play "what if... "   trouble is we probably don't have anyone that will really get much in return. I think we're looking at the low end predictions for most of these guys.  2nd/3rd/4th/5th round picks are all nice on paper but in reality they're mostly likely not game changers and many end up career AHLers. It's real chancy. Look how well Sather's disgraceful discarding of Brian Leetch worked out....That was the pessimistic part - the optimistic part of me would like to think that this team is a few pieces away from being a good team rather than in need of a big rebuild.

On a side note - it's amazing to see how many doctors post on this site. All of them able to diagnose Callahan's assured physical decline through their TV sets or from the expensive seats in the garden. I'm pretty sure he's not a cripple yet. He might just be a young guy (28!) whose having a rough time from an injury plagued year and can come back strong next year. He might even be getting back to 100% this season - it's just silly to talk about him like he's done and he should be discarded. He's the damn Captain! He definitely motivates this team through his play and determination. He is still a strong 2-way player capable of scoring but he doesn't need to score 35 goals to be considered a success. He's not an overpaid underachiever like half the roster (and the GM for that matter). Give the guy some frickin' slack!

And as always - let me just say "trade Del Zotto"! (or just ditch him somewhere...)

Every season there's good teams and bad teams. There is no one simple formula for a great team but it does start with upper management, especially in these salary cap years. There is so much more to consider than one dimension of a team - like "we need toughness" or "we need skilled grinders" or "we need guys who can score consistently" - Obvi - everyone does. Unfortunately here in "Rangertown" we

don't have the personnel. not here and not in the minors. we have nothing to offer other teams tradewise really - not without shooting ourselves in the foot. (that does not include MDZ!)  So this season's mess will not change. There is no magic wand our wonderfully sh*tty out of touch GM can wave. He and Dolan have backed us into a corner. This will be a lost season.

The players need to perform better for sure, but this group of players assembled for us can't seem to get it done. And we have little to no cap room. That's on your GM. It's easy to immediately blame the coach but no one here knows what AV is really like unless you're privy to some info that no one else is or you're in the locker rooms or at practices. You don't need to yell and scream on the bench or at the cameras to be a good coach.
As fans we can second guess lineup moves all we want, that's our prerogative but it's tough to judge a new coach on 40 games, especially one that was pretty successful elsewhere. (albeit with a better roster) The sad fact is that the Rangers are good enough to beat the other weak teams in the division and to linger around the 8th spot - same as we have been for most of Sather's tenure but that's it. Maybe we're only allowed to win every 54 years. Happy New Year!

Vancouver has been putting up good regular seasons for years. It's a better roster. Let's all stop the romanticizing of the Torts era. Torts was a decent coach but he didn't win squat here and we had the same problems Sather created. No goal scoring. Bad PP. Uneven roster. Bad contracts. Only reason we had any success was because of Hank and Torts having 5 guys collapsing in front of him. There was little to no offensive consistency for years. All we had most nights was endless cycling with no results. It was beyond boring to watch and frustrating to see guys getting injured trying to take pucks for the team. Torts didn't do much adapting other than realizing early on Sather handed him a weak deck offensively - so he had them go into a block pucks at all cost shell and he rode Hank into the ground along with Girardi, Cally and McD - hence the loss to the Devils in the East Finals. Yes there was more fire in the roster it seems, but that's it. Results were the same. Same for Dubi - what did he do here? Put up lame numbers and hold the team hostage for more money every chance he got. Oh and he lost most of the fights he got in. Problems start at top with Sather. AV might not be doing well yet, but it's not even one half a season. Yes they suck now and we're all angry but don't let that make you lose your common sense.

Biggest point you are missing is that just because you say trade Kreider and a prospect doesn't mean another teams GM is gonna take a crap deal like that. In reality they will want more than that. Kane also will want more money - hurt cap space. Not smart. Come back from fantasy land.

I know Nash isn't scoring, but can't fault him for not being as physical. He might have his career ended at any time. He's gotta score goals, gotta go to the net, but after multiple concussions he will never be the same. Sad thing is he seems to miss on some golden opportunies. This current squad is weaker physically/defensively and still has trouble scoring goals. Big problems to overcome even with a hot goalie. It will take the instant maturing of our young players and a return to former glory for Girardi, Staal and Richards for us to win consistently. You kidz might not remember the time before the interwebs but Brooks has been keeping hockey in the sports pages interesting for a long time. The Post was always the best hockey coverage - the Daily News and Newsday never gave it as much attention. Anyway...

We're 18 games into the season with a 9-9 record. Nothing is written in stone. Line ups change constantly and will continue to over the whole season. Let's see what they do. Nash can be a goal scoring stud. He has got to get back into the line up and help bury some of these chances that other Rangers forwards miss. I am concerned that he will be vulnerable to another concussion after one big hit - scary. The best place for him won't be known until AV gets him out there. Let's wait and see instead of knee jerk negative reactions.

Yes we've played better recently. Yes he's made some great passes, but can we hold off on putting Zucc in the hall of fame just yet? If he's as amazing as everyone seems to think here then he'll be fine on any of the top 3 lines. Also - why would Boyle play wing....do we not need him more for his centering/faceoff role?

Not a horrible game, but CAN WE BEAT THE FRICKIN' DEVILS PLEASE! A good team has to stomp on the weaker ones in the standings. Almost losing to Florida and then losing to the Devils again.... depressing.

You can't win them all, but you probably won't win games with sloppy defense. Not gonna get too angry cause we just rolled off a bunch of wins. It's clear though that we still have a ways to go and the team needs to learn how to play smart D under AV's system. More than a few times a game you'll see guys getting lost on coverage and leaving men wide open. Hopefully it will come so we can get above .500 and stay there.

It's silly to blame the refs - real silly. Calls don't always go your way. That's hockey. We get away with stuff too - every team does. What would you say to other teams fans who blamed all Ranger wins on bad calls? Zucc deserved his penalty for slashing at Marty, but Uncle Daddy should have got one too - instead they let him slide and call roughing on a Devil player whose name my brain doesn't care to recall.

A couple of things:

Seems like Hags has cooled off a little huh?

Girardi still looking unlike his old self. It's tough watching him make frequent mistakes with the puck. He looks tentative and nervous sometimes.

I really hate the Devils but I gotta admit I like watching Jagr still doing his thing. I'd root for him to do well on any team.

Forget about this one and move on to the next! (jelly donuts help)

@gmen9892 I find the opposite to your 2) point. Usually its the 30 - 50 yr olds who drink and don't care about sh*t that are really loud and sometimes obnoxious. Younger crowds are too busy tweeting....
