Robin Hood is, in my mind, one of the best adaptations of the story. Plus it includes a kickass soundtrack by the great Roger Miller, the incomparable Phil Harris as a bear, and the legendary Peter Ustinov as the villain. What more could you ask for?
How about Mister Roberts, with John Ford leaving production after punching Henry Fonda?
I'm not sure why I continue to read these. Self hate? If you were to go through every episode of Community and nitpick them you would find something to be disappointed in. Jeff was always making some pseudo sentimental speech, usually winding down with a "but maybe" moment. You seem to keep waiting for a Dan Harmon episode but duh-doy, there will be no more. I think it's time to move on.
Isn't it too soon to say that the "heart" is now absent from the show? It's a bit like diagnosing yourself with a brain tumor after a persistent migraine. The symptoms may be there, but shouldn't we wait til all the facts are in? I think it would be very hard to live up to the expectations we all had for this first episode after the months of delay, and while I agree this episode felt a little flat, (though who doesn't love a Muppet babies reference?) it is too early to declare the show dead.
Happiness by Solondz is fucking terrible. And no, I am not refering to the uncomfortable material, but the fact that I have rarely seen such a contempt for the characters/audience. The only other movie that loathes the audience on the same level, in my mind, would be 21 Jump Street, and at least that has the decency not pass itself off as art. Terrible.
@beccalikesbooks Wendy and Lucy might be one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. I mean goddamn, they just pile on the sadness.
A book I thought did a very interesting job crossing between fantasy and reality, in really weird and fascinating ways, was Madeleine is Sleeping by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum.
