@LauraKinCA @oldSquid(Mafia) think too much confidence was placed in that Major... Flash/Zulu messages, at least as far as I remember, 'never'(yeah, I know, never say never) had just one recipient. AND, everything was archived.. somewhere. One of my duties was creating microfiche files of all incoming and outgoing messages received by our Flag Command, and ensuring the developed reels were properly secured... hoops I had to jump through for the Top Secret stuff were.... fun... Don't know how long the shelf life is, but I'd beta dollar to a donut there's a copy of those messages somewhere...remember, Libraryof Congress has stuff datingback to the founding... just sayin'...

Damn. As a Radio Comms guy aboard the Com7thFleet Flagship, I handled Flash/Zulu traffic...and when one of those came in, EVERYBODY cleared for the appropriate level got the word and there was serious 'shittin 'n gittin' going on.... can't believe that Major's 'nonchalance' toward the messages..especially after the Second one, and when the third came in?!?!? Semms there should have been a head rolling at some point.
Great article, Jack...guess putting on a fedora and trenchcoat, and slinking in the shadows won't cut it anymore...;-)

@Allwet @oldSquid(Mafia) @snagglepuss @Recon6 gotta remember, Allwet, I are a old fart - LOL - and grew up when the "OLD American Way" was the ONLY American Way... born in '50 when Dad was off fighting the North Koreans (He was Navy, WWII and Pearl Harbor Survivor - and I was 'born' into the Navy- at a Naval Hospital) so yeah...the OLD American Way still works for me..plus back when Parents were Mom and Dad - and would kick your ass for screwing up...none of this "time out' poppycock...

@snagglepuss my GAWD!, snagglepuss what you're doing to your kids sounds a LOT like PARENTING...what in the world is wrong with you!?!?!?! don't you know that PARENTING went out the window back in the 60's????
Good on ya snagglepuss - not enough grownups with kids take the time anymore to be Parents.(.could get into the whole Parents vs 'friends' thing but there's not enough hours in the day)rather hand 'em off to indoc centers -errr schools, video games or anything/body else so the parents can pursue their own 'next goals and 'next big thing or toy'...
@toril agreed, Toril..."Journalism" as an 'honorable' profession is dead... and the rotting corpse is stinking up the world to high heaven. most of the 'people' that are 'reporting' are more focused on opinion and political agenda than the truth, shock value over fact, getting the 'sound bite' and popularity ( read "the big bucks") over doing the hard grunt work to factually report what is occurring in the World - commonly called the 'news'. It isn't news, it's entertainment aimed at getting 'ratings'... the World has gone all cattywhompus..

@YankeePapa I hope you're wrong as well, YP.... but... looking at the ROE's that our guys were - and are working under in Iraq and Afghanistan, what they may be forced to work under in this situation is, I fear nothing short of an escalation of the Charlie Foxtrot that they deal with now... and if they get in the 'path of Russian forces' - who do think the russkies will aim at first?!?! and as to being flown out on commercial aircraft..prolly in a box..sad but I'm afraid true - and that pisses the HELL out of me...

Great article, Holly! Hope to see more. Your mention of our society being one of a disengaged social order, not at ease with faceto face communication, brings to mind the current Japanese culture... wonder what the suicide rate of Japanese youth is...just as a comparison? I know when I was in Japan, a long time ago, at the very beginning of the current 'tech age' Japanes youth were even then, 'eat up' with the latest gadgets...

@Recon6 @CJCJ @oldSquid(Mafia) see, here I was trying to be a good guy and prevent that sorry Grunt from having to overpay for that fill up, and what do I get?!?!?!? nuthin' but grief....
and as to walking everywhere??? seems everytime the Navy turns around Army is asking for a ride somewhere on our cruise line...for FREE!!!!... and what about all those deuce and a halfs..and Huey helicopters?!?!?
@CJCJ @Recon6 hell, CJ..we still had a bottle of apple pie - and a quart of sillywater...so we could have run on further, BUT..and I should have warned Chief Webb about this when I gave him a quart and he mentioned using it as fuel for HIS plane.... you CAN use it for fuel..but the vehicle you use it in, then becomes 'unreliable'..for instance, with a plane, it will want to do loops and barrel rolls - with no warning... and will refuse to fly straight... with an SUV, it would want to go all 4 wheel drive and attack sheer cliffs and such!
@Recon6 @CJCJ Hey CJ! agree with 6 on the meet..definitely not enough time. As to changing call signs, not agood idea...if we did that, then we'd have some fat dumbass sheriff chasing all over hell and back.
Now..as to running out of gas.... I admit, I WAS the driver.. and to being a bit fuzzyheaded that morning, BUT 6 was the Navigator, and in preflight checks, HE should realized the gas was low('sides, it was his turn to buy the fill-up).... we were driving a GM product, and having one myself, I measured the distance my truck ran from the gas light dingy thing until I ran out of gas.... it was exactly 50 miles..figgered GM product equals GM product, so when the gas light' dingeyed', I figgered we had 50 miles, and surely could find a gas station within that distance(not calculating the lack of civilization centers in the western U.S. versus the eastern/Southern U.S.)....difference in GM products, my 2004 truck and a 2014 SUV... the damn SUV had exactly HALF the distance of my truck..and I should have realized we were screwed, when about the time of the dingy thing going off, we passed a station charging $2.95/gallon after we'd been paying half that all the way out... also, there were a couple vultures sittin' on a sign post right there as well.... Situational Awarenes, I was aware...just miscalculated.... oh and ask 6 how many times he lost his room key...LOL
@YankeePapa well said, as usual, YP... From what I've read and gathered about this, he planned this desertion or "defection" if you will. His asking about the consequences of 'lost gear' etc... indicate forethought and planning. I think his plan, in his head (walking awayand being accepted with welcoming arms) and the reality of what happened were two vastly different realities... which may indicate a certain tenuous grip on the real world? At any rate, actions have consequences, and I refer to my earlier comment about housing at Leavenworth as my solution... unless a quicker and more final solution is determined.
2 months, 2 weeks ago on The Deal with Bowe Bergdahl
@traumamama only benefit he should receive is lifelong free housing at Leavenworth with steady employment making little ones out of big ones...understand the Army has a gravel shortage...
Good article, Jack. Haven't read the book yet, but will..and soon. Your comment about being too young, angry, and arrogant to realize at the time, that your former Platoon Sergeant was watching out for you, shows that you got 'older and wiser'...can't do THAT without being young -and learning from it. So don't beat yourself up over it. I'm sure if your Sergeant was still around, he'd be proud of you and the man you've become.

so..history repeating, once again? we always prepare to fight the 'last war'.... eg., Napoleonic tactics during the War of Southern Independence...I have heard the Army is developing a new command - which having read about, sounds like the Green Berets getting 'back to their roots' of 'hearts and minds', instead of what they have been doing recently ( the last 10 years or so in A'stan and Iraq).
