@YankeePapa @oldSquid(Mafia) we were told the same..and New Frontier was iffy as well..we were pretty much confines to street level Wanchai and Kowloon... I found Kowloon to be too 'ritzy' for my blood..so pretty much stayed Wanchai side. Always started at the British Enlisted Club... the restaurant on the top floor (if I remember right) had really good food... Supper was usually a visit to "Jimmy's" for a steak.

@YankeePapa YP..we were in the same part of the world at about the same time....my first trip to Hong Kong was in early October of '69....and before I rotated back Stateside, I was fairly familiar with the Wanchai - 5 trips total to Hong Kong in the almost  2 1/2 years I was over there...loved Hong Kong "in the old days".. bet it's a whole lot different after the Brits gave it to the Commies...

@clluelo and it's been going on for years...I was working in the Oilfield, offshore in the early to mid 80's, worked with a Paki name Khan Abrar. It was a screwy job with lots of down time sitting in the 'office' and talking. Had a long discussion about islam and at one point, he told me if I didn't convert, he would have to kill me as that is what his religion dictated. All nonbelievers must die..said it matter of factly, like you would say..."oh, by the way, it's Wednesday."

@Txazz I'm not so sure it's incompetence...  I think it's a well scripted appearance to fool and distract the American People. He acts like he is checking out and the msm is all atwitter about how he is bored, can't accomplish anything and is checking out by playing golf and going on vacation...in the meantime, his policies and programs are still moving forward - and he gives campaign style speeches talking about how wrong things (that he is implementing) are and how nothing is getting done, and he has to use his phone and pen and bypass Congress to achieve anything...like legalizing 5 million ILLEGAL immigrants etc... on another note, I'm not so sure that the kidnappers were not forewarned by a 'little birdie' (named Valerie maybe) that the raid was coming and to move the hostages..could explain his foot dragging on the rescue op (if there actually was one)..think back to what was leaked about the opportunities to get bin Laden before the trigger was finally pulled...word was he delayed three or four times on the advice of Valerie before somebody else actually gave the go ahead... think also about his footdragging on what to do about attacking isis/isil/is/whatever the f**k they call themselves now...

Sounds good Loren, and I am with you on the whole thing. One question though...in your Part 3: Round up,under bullet 2 you state: "What will happen is, as the Mexican Military creates a bigger presence to prevent these “runners” it will also prevent others from being able to sneak across.)"

Parts of the Mexican Military are complicit in the cartel drug trade and smuggling operations. SOrt of like the fox guarding the hen house to my way of thinking..

Otherwise, I'm purt near ready to move back to Texas to 'Jine up" and help out!

@11BRecon Sharpshooters (as they were called at the time - Berdan's Sharpshooters comes to mind) probably did get target practice and ammo allocations due to the fact their skill levels had to be higher... but then those selected for those positions tended to already be marksmen. There have been rifles found on battlefields of that War, with rounds loaded to the muzzle - and the piece was never fired between reloads...

4 months, 3 weeks ago on The Problem With Dick Measuring

Reply

@11BRecon and this problem goes all the way back to at least that 1861-65 War here in America... infantry troops on both sides were trained in manual of arms,...and maybe loading their rifles, but target practice was quite often taught in their first actual engagement with the other side.

@YankeePapa @oldSquid(Mafia)  good stuff, YP...evidently we covered some of the same ground and similar experiences. I found the Filipino people away from the G.I. hangouts the same...if you behaved yourself.... Thai folks, same same as well as most Japanese... seemed they really enjoyed engaging Gaijin (round eyes-Americans) to practice their English.

As to Filipino haircuts, the 'butterfly knife' seemed to be everywhere...saw one put to good use by a pissed off bar girl against a Marine in 'Po City one afternoon... and I remember hearing about putting a hit on someone for a carton of KOOL cigarettes or bottle of Johnny Walker Red and a photo of the target...eventually, said mark would be found in Shit River - that river that ran between main gate Subic and Olongapo...rumor or myth? Who knows, but we had a less than respected E-8 (asshat) that would not leave the base in Subic... seems his photo from the watch board on the afterbrow disappeared one time in Subic

Also, Thai Women and Taiwanese in the mix...only ones that  didn't seem to fit (sorta like the Vietnamese -  though there were a fair number I believe hooking up with Army and Marine types) were women from Singapore..and Hong Kong.musta been something to with the Brits...

Whole different side to this, is young servicemen (due to time I was in, can't say how much female service members are in this mix), stationed in exotic foreign lands, .arrying foreign females (affectionately called 'Bar hogs' in this old Squid's day), whose main reason for marrying said young serviceman was that ticket to the 'Big PX'... and the 'good life' stateside...but either way, you are on the money, Chief. Good article.
