@schmittastic i'm loving it for my blog photography, even though i haven't even played around with manual settings too much. It's just really freeing to be able to choose the focus point in the depth of field for what i typically photograph. I have not, unfortunately, tried it for video!

I purchased a Canon T4i recently, but that doesn't mean I know much about manual settings. These tips kind of made my head spin but were super helpful. I'm glad I invested in the nifty-fifty lens since it seems like everyone recommends this one. Now I just need to really sit down and focus on each of the three manual settings to get to know them better!

Great tips. I used to do this but should pick it back up again, especially on the "best posts in x category for the past month" realm.

@schmittastic mm good point... the honesty is a really good point. I'm working on a responsive site design so I'll think about incorporating that into the new site. Thanks as always!

While I find lightboxes annoying (especially since I clear my cache all the time while I'm web designing)... you're absolutely right, I almost always sign up, especially if I've scrolled down a third or a half of the way down the page and like what I've seen so far.

I'm not sure a lightbox is a good solution for my site since the content isn't fully niche... but I will definitely reconsider it if my site does end up steering one specific direction.

This is a really great article for me to read this morning; it helps me feel re-energized to work on my site for realsies. Paying too much attention to stats, while important, can be draining if they don't align with your goals.

Perhaps my goals should be a combination of "grow x% of twitter followers each month" AND "receive x number of interactions from people saying I helped or inspired them in some way". While the latter is more subjective and maybe shouldn't be counted so intensely, THAT's the kind of feedback that really does matter.

So, your article is really inspiring because it'll help me to remember to really soak in those positive interactions and stop worrying about stats so much, because those positive interactions is what success looks like for me. Thanks Amy!

Incognito window-- excellent tip. Btw I have a question for you-- In the past, I've branded myself as Jenn Staz but am going back to my maiden name, which unfortunately is pretty common. Do you think I should keep Jenn Staz as a "stage name" of sorts, or really try to rebuild my brand under "Jenn Coyle" or "Jenn of Hello Brio"?

Love your shirt, it's so purty! And lol on the "much shorter version of the question" comment :)

I know sadly very little about SEO. Your video helps me understand that if I want the business end of my site to take off (which, honestly, I haven't focused on yet), I really do need to focus down on one niche on the blogging end of things. (Sigh)

More SEO tips please! Unfortunately, SEO is something I've wanted to ignore and thought was a bunch of hocus pocus (because of bad advice from certain people)... and I need to know more. All of it.

I'm glad Twitter finally did this. However after looking at my "best" tweets, I feel super lame!

But I did see some trends and will take those into consideration. Actually, now that I look at it closer, it seems like it's only pulling in stats for after my handle change, which makes sense. Looks like I screwed the pooch on that one.

Anywho, thanks for sharing, as always!

@schmittastic oh that's weird... I always thought you had to press enter for Google Plus, but yeah you're right! (You CAN press enter which makes it draw a box around the hashtag... but yeah, it's not required, apparently!) I do use G+ hashtags all the time, so not having to press enter will make it a lot faster.

For Twitter-to-Facebook, I meant that if you post something on Twitter that posts to Facebook, I wondered if the post would automatically "pick up" the hashtags. And I answered my own question- it does! (I don't expect hashtags to be clickable across social media channels)

#hashtag!! Finally Facebook, really? I'm definitely excited about this. On Facebook it seems pretty seamless in my .5 seconds of testing, in terms of typing hashtag-something.

Google Plus's integration of hashtags is still a little clunky in my opinion. Having to press "enter" and doing so too fast on G+ feels a little wrong to me, do you agree?

I'm wondering if hashtags will convert to clickable hashtags from Twitter-to-Facebook posts. Have you tried that yet?

And yes, thanks for the news!! You are definitely where I hear these things first.

Maybe I'm überly old fashioned about music.. but what ever happened to old school iTunes and syncing that with your iPhone or iPod? Maybe I need to get on the streaming bandwagon. The only way I discover new music now is by going to concerts of my favorite bands and hearing their opening bands.

Okay, so I'm lying a little. I did what @edebont did and put all of my music on Google Play (which, if it's now called Google Music, would explain why Google Play doesn't load on my web browser at work anymore).

Am I totally missing out? Should I just hop on the spotify bandwagon?

Hola! Very good to know about this. When doing my taxes for 2012 a few months ago, it almost made me not want to freelance anymore. Well, that's being overly dramatic - it was just exhausting trying to sort it all out, as you know.

So then my question becomes- how much does this end up costing a person per month? i hopped on over to their site to check it out but was scared at the lack of information and pricing.

I kind of have my toe stuck into Google Plus but easily get the most traffic from Facebook and Twitter out of all the social media sites. And oddly enough, for the number of followers I have on Google+, it doesn't really make sense! However, I do know that I only use G+ to push out new blog content, and not to chat, like I do on Twitter.

G+ is frustrating and is like a plane that keeps trying to get off the ground. I do know that we have to keep up with our presence on there in case it ever does fly and take over powerhouses fb  & twitter... but until then, I'm not sure what to do with it.

The tip for uploading photos with every update is great. Instant highlighting. I will definitely strive to do that!

YES. There's nothing wrong with being Renaissance Women / Men. I constantly feel like people shame me for having more than one interest (via their blogging tip blogs). My blog is a smattering of all of my personal interests, and people are always telling me that it's better to have a specific, unique niche, and MAYBE you can branch out to other things like once a month. PSH. That sounds miserable to me. Sure, if I had the time to maintain like 10 niche blogs I would. But who does that?

Although sometimes I do feel like I'm spreading myself too thin, to the point of not being able to master any one thing, that's just how it is. And that's how it will be until I give up working full time and pursue my dreams, or whatever you want to call it.

@schmittastic  for sure on all points - I think what's holding me back mostly is the fact that I did a calendar once before but got overwhelmed really quickly and then scheduled posts went by the wayside. NO way. "Editorial calendar (per savvysexysocial)" has been #1 on my to-do list for several months now. I actually have my scribbly post idea notebook and calendars with me today so I can hopefully work on it during lunch. It's hard to find the time between wanting to just write a post vs planning, but I know that long term planning will benefit me and my readers tenfold. I just need like 2 more hours in a day, that's all. Is that too much to ask?

I've been trying the GTD (Getting Things Done) organizational approach, but it doesn't keep me un-stressed! I've got to learn how to appreciate my accomplishments more so than dreading what I need to be doing. The more energy I spend actually DOING the things I need to do, the less time I mope around feeling sorry for myself for not having done "anything".

Back to GTD, it's a really amazing process for helping you be able to be on your top focus for when you're doing something that requires a lot of brain power. Check out the book! I also recommend "The Way We're Working Isn't Working". May not be totally relevant, but another great one for using energy effectively.

I started an editorial calendar back in July(?) and have been on fire ever since. I haven't stuck to it 100%, but it allowed me to think through what types of posts were going up when. I began drafting a bunch in Wordpress and scheduling them for the day that I had on my editorial calendar.

Spending some brainstorming time on a calendar has been one of the best things for me. Instead of wasting time thinking about what I should write, and coming up with a lackluster or repetitive post, I only need to spend one or two hours per day to get a post up.

Glad to know I'm doing something right! :D Great article, Amy.

I know it's necessary to keep pumping up my Facebook pages because there are some people who rely heavily on Facebook, but I find that it can be more spammy, if you post an article more than once, than Twitter. I find it hard to create unique content for my Facebook page when I'm constantly doing so on my webpage and my YouTube channel! Maybe if I blogged full time... *dreams*
