Excellent observations, Kevin. Spot on. The Rangers need a true sniper a James Neal type guy; someone with a great shot who's not afraid to take it. I'm hoping Haggerty is that guy. He's a finisher. He might be the perfect winger to receive the great passes from Brass and Zuke.

Stralman and Staal had to be the worst offensive second pair in the league. Neither one can break a spider web with their shot. To be successful in the 2015 NHL, you've got to get pucks on net from the blue line and traffic in front. Boyle should provide the shot and Staal can hopefully mitigate his defensive shortcomings.
9 months, 3 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://nyrangersblog.com/2014-articles/rangers-address-defense-with-signings-of-dan-boyle-mike-kostka.html
Kevin, I'm glad you are getting the accolades you deserve. You do a great job.
Thoughts: LA was the better team by far. Their forwards are much better. Their defense is better especially offensively. Goal tending was a push. Had the Rangers faced Emery, Mason, Fleury and Tokarski they would have won. The time of possession reflects the disparity between the teams. To disparage AV in any way is grossly unfair, imo. The Rangers can be very proud of their courage and resiliency and AV is in great part responsible for that
The pairing of Stralman and Staal received praise but neither of these guys can shoot the puck even a little bit. They are both good one-way players. They don't scare anyone when they are paired unlike Voynev, Dowdy, Martinez. Staal is a huge offensive under achiever. His game has regressed even with offensive minded AV, Staal was absolutely futile offensively the entire year. He has an extremely slow release and his ordinary velocity is innacurate as a rule. Stralman did a great job in his own zone and can skate a bit but that pop gun shot of his is a serious liability. He will certainly end up as being one of the most overpaid players in FA. The two of them are perhaps the least productive second pair offensively in the league. In today's NHL the formula is to have Dmen bomb the puck from the point and get traffic in front of the net. Outside of Mac, there's no one who can fire the puck with velocity and accuracy
My RX: Buy out Richards. Thank God he didn't have a career ending injury. Try to trade Nash: If he has an NTC he will waive it if u tell him he's no longer wanted. He killed the Rangers in the post season. Try to resign Stralman or Staal but not both. Zuccarello is priority one, of course. Sign Pouliot and Boyle if we can get favorable terms. St, Louis is overmatched against a big tough team like the Kings. I'd love to trade him if we can get some value. The Rangers have a weak farm system at present and St. Louis' decent playoffs makes Sather's exorbitant price paid for him look better than it was. When you see kids like Toffoli and Pearson, you can see what our farm system is missing. Maybe Miller and Lindberg can emerge. Maybe.

Kevin, with due respect and appreciation for this great blog, it's you who needs the straight jacket. Do you really think that Bettman has fixed the series? I guess you do. You apparently believe that he would jeopardize everything: his career, his reputation, the NHL just to get a couple of more games. What would happen if one of the conspiring officials got a case of remorse and decided to go public. Would Bettman have him killed to protect his nefarious plan?
AV got it right. No whining. "They were penalties."
I'll tell you what AV's not sharing. Stralman has possibly the softest shot in the NHL. Staal has such a slow release that most of his shots are blocked and when he does get one off, it's usually wide. Two excellent one way players, period.

So do we want the Jackets or Flyers? Tough call. If Philly loses to the Pens this afternoon in regulation and the Jackets win in Florida tonite, we play the Jackets because of the tiebreaker. Jackets have Bob but are missing Horton leaving them with Johanson as their only proven sniper. Big, tough, physical dirty area team that's hard to play against.
Flyers have Giroux and Ranger killer Simmonds as well as scorers like Hartnell, Vorachek, Lecavalier. Mason is more vulnerable than Bob. Jackets have the better backline. We did beat the Jackets in Columbus in a big showdown game recently. Philly has been losing of late but just before that they were beating the very best teams in the league.I think I'd prefer playing the Jackets. You?
Hopefully he'll be back for the Stanley Cup Finals.

The PP looked pretty damn good when Diaz was qb'ing it. Richards is as bad as last year and is a huge liability away from the puck especially. If it itches, scratch it.
JT Miller, a four point night tonite. Seven points in the last two games: 2 goals, 5 assists. Was number one star two nights in a row. Ryan Bourque, goal and two assists. He's been on fire and he bears watching.
1 year, 1 month ago on Richards Has X-Ray on Finger
Most consistent scorers? Richards currently ranks 252nd in the league in goal conversion percentage at 7.7%. That's tied with McDonagh and barely ahead of Stepan. There is no forward in the entire league who has taken as many shots as Richards and has a lower scering percentage. In fact, there are many defensemen throughout the league with a higher percentage than Richards. Add in his poor defensive play (minus 10, the worst on the team) and you have a guy who's more liability than asset.
The Dolan formula to perfection. Trade away your draft picks so you can put some bodies in the seats for the playoffs. Well at least this deal wasn't as bad as the Clowe fleecing. Gordie Clark must feel like quitting. A year worth of work scouting guys he'll never get to see the Rangers pick. Sather vs Yzerman is like a guppy vs a Great White.

Callahan is playing like Hakeem Nicks...not to get hurt in a contract year. it seems. He rarely hits anyone and hasn't been getting scoring chances. The sliding block of a shot he made the other night reminds you how good this guy was. He's not that player at the present time.
Lindberg, two more goals. Fast one more. Ten of Lindberg's goals are even strength. Fast has to get more shots on goal. He doesn't even average two shots a game. His 30% conversion rate is unsustainable. Lindberg averages almost three shots a game.
Duke, one goal and two assists. He keeps rolling.
Dorsett has as much chance of getting in the lineup as Falk. Bad penalties, no production. Carcillo is much better in all phases except pk. Dorsett replace Dom Moore? That's like replacing Rembrandt with Earl Scheib.

Scratch Stepan? This is beyond stupid. Incomprehensible. . Ok he's in a slump, but he contributes in so many other ways: He's one of the best defensive players in the entire league. Why not scratch Richards who only has five more goals and three more assists, but is a horrific defensive player...a lifetime minus player who can't forecheck and doesn't kill penalties. Doesn't defense matter? Kevin, I suggest you talk to the US Olympic Committee and ask them what they see in Stepan.

Another thing Adam is the notion that additional cap space is going to do you any good in FA. The recent trend is to sign your best players before they reach free agency and so the annual crop gets worse and worse. OMG, look at all the horrific huge money signings the past few years: Leino, Erhoff, Weiss, Clarkson, Clowe, Wisniewski, Richards and so many more. The busts far and away outweigh guys like Carle and Filpulla who pan out. This year's FA crop is already weak and the best of them may not ever go on the market. Add that to the fact that the Panthers now have a blank check to spend up to $40M to build the team and other teams have significant cap room what chance do the Rangers have to get a good player without making a Richards type deal. The successful teams have known for a while that the draft is the only way to build a team that will last at a high level. Unload and rebuild is my vote.
1 year, 3 months ago on What Would A Trading Deadline With The Rangers As Sellers Look Like?
Great job as usual. There is no chance whatsoever of Slats giving up on the season. not when u look at that absurd trade for Clowe which cost them two high draft choices and would have been a been a third he if had resigned him. No wonder the Rangers have the worst farm system in all of hockey with not a single top four Dman prospect in the pipeline with the possible exception of Brady S. who looked none to promising in the Junior tourney. Other than Miller, Boo,The Duke and Butch are the only viable forwards, but the last three are years away if ever. The Sharks had a far better chance to go deep in the playoffs last year but they understand how build a team so they unloaded Clowe and Murray an the deadline.
Del Zotto reflects the overall malaise of the defense. He has a soft, innaccurate shot. He has two goals. Stralman has no goals and only four assists in 47 games. Girardi has three goals. Moore has two. Staal has two. Falk, Dmac and Allen zero. Even with McD's seven goals the D's total is a pathetic 16 goals. Jeez, Hedman, Krug, Weber and others have 10 alone. How can the Ranger's ever compete with the big boys until they upgrade this mess? We need to get some bombers on the blue
1 year, 3 months ago on Gone In Nine Seconds
Watching Bishop, it made me wonder when they are going to heighten and widen the nets. I guess it will take a 6:10/400 pound widebody who covers every inch of the net without having to move before they make an overdue change.
Kiss of death? Each time AV praises a guy, i.e, Miller, Falk, Allen, they become a scratch within a game or two.
Btw, Rangers presently tied for 5th in the league in shots on goal...ahead of the Penguins, Bruins, Blues, Caps and Canucks. Unfortunately the conversion percentage may be the lowest in the league.
1 year, 3 months ago on Same Lineup vs. Stars
Happy New Year Kevin. Thanks for all your work on this great blog. Also thanks to Adam and the other contributors.
Mediocre? Ha. Those guys are the Panthers and not the Pushovers any more. They are good and their recent record shows it. When Tim Thomas plays a game like he did, they are very tough to beat, especially at home. If Lindback was in there, we would have had four goals again.
And no mention of the gutsy comeback and the dominating OT? When was the last time we took four points in Florida especially against two good teams? Good job by our boys.
Allen was not good last night. He seemed physically overmatched and had some bad turnovers. Still, he's a big plus over DZ and Falk and hopefully will adapt to the NHL.

Good job Adam. The sad thing that despite Skjei and Buchnevich the Rangers have the worst farm system in all of hockey. Other than these two, the Rangers have one viable prospect in all of Junior hockey, Duclair, and one other in college, Nieves. The Wolfpack is last in the standings in the entire AHL without a single high end prospect. Not a very good outlook for us. I wonder how Gordie Clark flies under the radar. He's done a terrible job.

God how I hate this team. The coach is awful. He has no adaptability
whatsoever. This team cannot succeed playing run and gun yet he persists
in playing it.
Sam and Joe M. make it even harder to
watch with their incessant shilling for the MSG brand. When a Ranger
turns it over or makes a horrible play, they rarely mention it, but if a
Ranger makes a routine hockey play, Sam is always there to say, "Good
play by Boyle or Good play by Girardi etc. Last night was a new low.
They didn't even identify the culprits in those awful turnovers by Del
Zaster and Moore. They're so intent on protecting the MSG brand they
fail to call the game. They constantly cheat the fans.
night when they started telling us what a great job Gernander is doing
in Hartford, do they really believe that none of us are aware of the
awful record the Whale/Wolfpack has had during his tenure. Are they
aware that he hasn't sent one player to the Rangers who has made even
the slightest impact with the possible exception of Kreider.
A crappy team with crappy management deserves crappy announcers. The fans deserve better.
1 year, 3 months ago on Islanders 5, Rangers 3
Buy him out over Richards? Is today April 1st? Dumbest thing I've yet heard. With a relatively low cap hit and an existing contract don't you think that the Rangers would be able to trade him for some worthwhile assets? His ntc wouldn't be an issue once he knows he's no longer wanted at MSG.
That said, Nash is a dumb hockey player. Instead of making the simple pass he tries to do it all himself. Even when he does pass it rarely reaches a team mates's tape and too often winds up in a turnover. What a disappointment.
1 year, 3 months ago on Will The Real Rick Nash Please Stand Up
This is a terrific article that really touches the bases. Glad you mentioned Hank's stick handling which hurts on the pp, pk and also contributes to hard wiring in the defensive zone. Nash does not make players better while Stepan does.

Asham, Bickel? Man it's hard to be a Rangers fan these days.
Btw, Cam Jansen has more goals (3) than D.Moore, Boyle and Pyatt who have one goal between them. And Sather has unlimited shelf life.
1 year, 4 months ago on Rangers Recall Arron Asham; Miller Sent To Wolfpack
This team cannot win with AV as coach because a fast break, run and gun style will fail asalmost every team will outscore them simply because they have more talent. Sad to say, but Tort's circle the wagons, shot blocking style is the only thing that will work unless somehow they get better players.
Rangers continue to collect first round busts. Beach, Pyatt, Boyle, Pouliot together should be on pace for five goals between them. Hey, I'll take it.
1 year, 4 months ago on Mashinter Traded to Chicago for Beach
Another thing about Lundquist: Some of the problem when the Rangers get hard wired in their own zone is Hank's astonishingly poor play with the puck. He looks like he's allergic to the puck and can't wait to unload it up the wall where in usually results in a turnover. He also regularly fails to recover icings on the PP and fire the puck up ice thereby saving time and preventing a change from the opponent. They don't keep metrics on goal tenders' play with the stick but when you watch a guy like Rask, you see how much a goaltender contributes to his team's offensive zone time. Trade Hank, buy out Richards, get good players for Hank and use the cap savings for free agents who aren't over the hill. (Btw, no need to remind me of Hank's out of nowhere pass that resulted in an assist for him. Strictly an aberration.)
1 year, 4 months ago on Lundqvist Contract Talks Have Not Progressed
Sather waiting out the season? That would be the height of stupidity. Hank might very well walk especially if he doubts the team's chances for a cup. Sather needs to trade him for assets this season and hope to find another goal tender to go along with Talbot just like the Rays found Bishop and the Yotes found Smith and the Kings found Scrivens. To allow Lundquist to walk for nothing is totally unthinkable.
The only problem with the Rangers is they are 6th in the league in shots on goal but next to last in goals scored. 'Nuf said.
1 year, 4 months ago on Rangers Couldn't Break A Carton of Eggs In Tampa
Replace Girardi and Stralman with McIlrath and Allen? Might as well replace Rick Nash with Michael Haley. My RX: Rangers need to get out of denial and realize they have zero chance of competing for the Cup in the forseeable future. They don't have a single viable impact player in the entire organization; Hartford, College or Juniors. The Wolfpack is more inept at scoring goals than the Rangers. My solution: Trade Lundquist, buyout Richards, use the cap space to sign core players like Girardi, Stralman, Kreider and rebuild the team with draft choices. Of course this will never happen and Sather will continue to bring in the Pyatt's, Pouliots, Falks off the scrap heap.
1 year, 4 months ago on Rumors: More Del Zotto; No Interest in Havlat; Valuing Neil

Great as Hank was, the save of the night was on Nash's penalty shot. Nash's move was classic and the guy still managed to get a leg out.

How about Richards to the press box. What an awful pre-season. Rick Nash insists on trying to skate through two or three guys despite the fact he turns it over much of time. Putting Richards and Nash on the same line is a bad idea considering their defensive shortcomings. John Moore tries to do too much with the puck. He needs to let the game come to him a bit more.
Falk played well, Allen seemed a bit overwhelmed by the speed and intensity. Bickel had his best game other than taking another bad penalty. Gotta love Fast. CT. will be good for him. The play of Powe and an equally rejuvenated Asham may result in Dorsett being cut. Dorsett really isn't that good at anything other than taking way too many penalties. Can't see slow poke Pyatt on this team. Miller was good, but like last year, he gets reckless at times and it results in a scoring chance for the other guys. There is no doubt he will be a good player for many years and does mgmt. want to put up with his growing pains now or send him back for more seasoning? Ditto Lindberg. I think Pouliot is a big plus; certainly an upgrade over Pyatt. He's got obvious talent and perhaps he's finally found the team he's been looking for for the past few years.
The Wolfpack should be good for a change and it will be refreshing not to see Newbury's name at the top of the scoring list as its been for the past few seasons.
Kudos to AV. He stuck with his plan of playing the young guys and he liked what he saw for the most part. All in all I liked this pre-season. The team seems more than willing to play for the coaching staff and I loved their enthusiasm and energy. The team played well until the Mashinter penalty the kids were holding their own with the excellent Kings who had their regular lineup in there. Insert Cally, Steps and Hags and the defense, pk, pp and speed will dramatically increase. I'm looking forward to a great season. I love the fast break concept AV has brought and it's great to see guys going to the net. The defensive shortcomings of the pre-season will sort themselves out b4 too long, I'm confident. LGR

Edmonton is now a very good team with a lot of firepower. They played their regulars with the exception of Yakapov, Hopkins and the goalie. The Rangers outbattled them and outshot them 27-21. At least three of the 21 were redirections maybe more, but at the very most they had 18 shots on goal. Fluky goals and bad Biron resulted in five goals. Vancouver with their fire power only managed 21 shots while the Rangers had 41 shots, 14 that were blocked and 12 that missed the net. So against two strong offensive teams, both playing at home, the Rangers gave up 41 shots on goal, a significant number coming on the pp. The Ranger defense was good outside of the blatant breakdowns and shoddy goal tending. The Rangers played with grit and determination even though they were probably a bit tired from an intense road schedule. The Rangers are going to be a very good team and you may as well resign yourself to that fact.
